JUST IN: Abducted Edo lawyer, sister regain freedom
The newly called-to-the-bar lawyer, Peace Onyesom, and her sister, Gift Onyesom, who were kidnapped along the Okene-Auchi road on Friday, have regained their freedom.

The victims’ brother, Godspower Onyesom, confirmed their release to PUNCH Metro correspondent in a telephone conversation on Tuesday.

Recall that Peace had participated in the Nigerian Law School call-to-the-bar ceremony on September 23.

She was returning to Benin, Edo State, alongside her sister when they were kidnapped.

Confirming her release, Godspower said, “She has been released. She is back home.”

In an accompanying video sent to our correspondent, Peace thanked everyone who had come to her rescue while saying that the military rescued them.

She said, “Thank you, everyone. My sister and I have been rescued. The military in Okpella has rescued us.”

Similarly, an ex-aide to the Delta State Governor, Harrisson Gwanishu, confirmed that Peace and her Sister have been released.

Gwamnishu wrote, “Peace Onyesom and Gift Onyesom, kidnapped while returning from the call to ceremony in Abuja, have just been released to us near a village in Okpella. It is a tough journey.”

Efforts to get the reaction of the Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, Williams Aya, proved abortive as he did not respond to calls made to his line as of the time of filing this report.

PUNCH Online had reported that the Nigerian Police Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, in a post on his X page on Sunday, disclosed that eight of the abducted persons were rescued.

This incident is not the first instance of kidnapping along the Abuja, Kogi, and Benin expressways.

In February, a member of the National Youth Service Corps serving in Ibadan, Oyo State, Rofiat Lawal, was kidnapped by unidentified gunmen along the Benin-Ore Expressway.

Her friend, who identified as Agbakwara, had raised the alarm about Lawal’s abduction, stressing that she was returning from Benin, Edo State, to report to her place of primary assignment in Oyo when she was abducted.

She was, however, released after her family paid a ransom of N1 million.

Similarly, on September 9, the Kogi State Vigilante Services confirmed the abduction of three passengers of an 18-seater Toyota bus at Aku village along the Okene-Lokoja Expressway.

But if it was military that rescued them, the news would have been broke by the military or police, with evidence of kidnappers killed.

So, she should stop lying. They paid ransom. Simple and short!

When people start being truthful in this country, it becomes easy to know where our problem lies and how best to tackle the issues.

Not by misguided feedback from victims.

Rescue? By who? The truth is that they paid ransom before being released by the kidnappers themselves. The Nigerian Securities are incapable of rescuing anyone kidnapped. Even the police are paying if kidnapped. Thank God for their safe return.

Maybe she meant to say after the ransom was paid, they used military vehicle to bring them to town. Cux these days I don't even know the difference between kidnappers and military anymore. Them wear almost same uniform, when I see them on videos posted online. Heavy weapons like the military. Thank God for the lawyer and her sister. Now imagine how traumatized they must have been. Terrible country

Before before, kidnapping was a very dangerous and revered crime. Even some criminals dare not do kidnapping. Then, the targets used to be a very wealthy and prominent people or a political target.

Now, kidnapping is very common among thieves even aboki, house helps, drivers, barrow pushers and fulanis. It's now a form of business just like when phone snatching was so random that it was a business for many petty thieves.

The poor, ordinary people are now targets, not the rich again.

Poor people used to walk freely before cuz they knows, they have nothing of interest to thieves. Now, u give something or your life goes.

These are rebound effects of long time corruptions, non inclusive governments, public funds embezzlement, political nepotism, political favoritism, siphoning of funds which I normally tag political psychosis.

On a normal political research, everything happening in this country are linked to corruption.

They play politics of division, tribalism, nepotism, favoritism so they can get away with things so easily because they know say na dem dem dey the power.

We are in a long thing in this country right now

Rescued and then everything returns to normal. What about combing that notorious forest and getting rid of the kidnappers once and for all.

If you ever wonder what hope is there for you, remember that a former siting governor while still in office paid ransom to kidnappers to rescue his relatives and nothing was done thereafter to bring the criminals before the law.

This is not to take away from the God news though....... So happy for them.
