Benue Gov. Alia To Build Airport, Export/import Processing Zone by BenuePolitician(op): 9:28am On Oct 01, 2025
Benue state Government has disclosed plans to build an airport with three wings; International, Domestic and Cargo as well as an Export/Import Processing Zone in the state .

Governor Alia said the airport would be built along Makurdi-Gboko road to ameliorate the sufferings of Benue people.

Commissioner for Lands and Survey, Rev. Frederick Ikyaan stated this on Friday, 26th September, 2025 in a meeting with traditional rulers from the affected local government areas of Guma, Gboko, Gwer East and Tarka.

The Commissioner revealed that the Airport is to be cited on the left hand side of the road from Makurdi, immediately after Agasha junction while the Processing Zone will be on the right hand side of the same area, requiring land up to 100 hectares.

He said the Governor wants the project to commence immediately but deemed it fit to inform them before taking any further action.

He however informed that, survey of the land has already been done, adding that there is also need to plan the area for ease of development.

Responding on behalf of the traditional rulers, Ter Gwer, Chief Dominic Akpe and Ter Gboko, Chief Gabriel Shosom all described the move as a welcome development that will help solve some of their problems including herdsmen invaders.

The traditional rulers particularly sent words of appreciation to Governor Hyacinth Alia for the noble project but requested for adequate compensation for indigenes of the affected communities.

They appreciated the Commissioner for the steps he has taken so far, saying they are happy with his disposition to carry them along by requesting them to provide representatives that will follow up developments there on their behalf.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Lands, Survey, Matthias Antor thanked the traditional rulers and charged them to enlighten their people as according to him, any correspondence from the community not endorsed by the chiefs will not be honored.

the Commissioner was flanked at the meeting by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Eunice Ihu, Director General, Benue Geographic Information System (BENGIS), Professor Daniel Amine, Special Adviser to the Governor on Lands, Surveyor Matthias Antor and Directors of the ministry among others.

Air Force Base.

That's the problem. It has been a problem, especially during election campaign season.

My previous post.

naptu2:
2014 article. General Buhari's aircraft denied permission to land at Makurdi Air Force Base. This article blamed the Federal Airport Authority (FAAN), but if I remember correctly, FAAN later released a statement that it had nothing to do with them because the airport is owned and run by the Nigerian Air Force.

https://www.nairaland.com/2016832/buharis-aircraft-barred-landing-makurdi

Nigerian Air Force statement (2018). Southern leaders were due to fly to Benue for a summit with Middle Belt leaders. Their aircraft was denied permission to land at the Air Force Base. Femi Fani-Kayode condemned President Buhari for refusing to allow the aircraft to land at the base. The Nigerian Air Force released a statement that the facility is strictly a military airport. They said that civilian planes are allowed to land only after they have sought permission from NAF Headquarters. They said that the southern leaders got permission for a particular aircraft to land at the base, but at the last minute they made a verbal request for another aircraft to land at the base (I think the original aircraft had engine trouble), but it was too late to process the permission.

Governor Ortom complained about a so-called flight ban at Makurdi Airport

Governor Ortom claimed that the government had imposed a flight ban on Makurdi Airport so that he would be exposed to bandits on the expressway. The FAAN said that it had nothing to do with them because the airport is owned and run by the Air Force. There's also another article that I haven't found yet, but Atiku's plane was denied permission to land at the airport when he wanted to campaign in Benue.

What was actually happening was that the airport was being renovated so that it could support anti-banditry operations. There had also been problems with the runway, so it was also fixed. I saw the video footage of the work that was done.

Chief of Air Staff authorises civilian operations at Makurdi Air Force Base. This was after the renovation was completed.

Vice President Osinbajo and Governor Ortom at Makurdi Air Force Base. The Vice President passed through the base on his way to Wukari. Governor Ortom came to the base to welcome him, but the Air Force guards at the gate refused to let him in. Governor Ortom raised an alarm in the media. Vice President Osinbajo heard about what happened and called the Chief of Air Staff. The Chief of Air Staff ordered the guards to let the governor in and suspended the head of the guards pending an investigation into the incident.

The Governor was able to meet the Vice President when the VP came back to the base on his way to Abuja.

My takes:

This isn't a misplaced priority by Benue State like some uninformed posters are doing here.

Benue State is a major agricultural belt for yams, fruits, and more which require value addition for domestic consumption and exports. Therefore having an airport (International, Domestic and Cargo wings) with the Export/Import Processing Zone in the State is a very wise move to increase the State's revenue and ease of travel. In addition to the drones I read Benue State purchased recently for aerial surveillance reasons and the impending implementation of State and community Policing during the constitutional amendments
as STRONGLY proposed the Nigerian President in recent times, Benue State is good to go. Period.

There is an airport.

Airpeace used to come weekly to load passenger.

Buhari stopped the operation over grudge with Ortom.

No need for another airport... A misplaced priority indeed.

Benue state is blessed to have this man as their governor. He has been doing great projects that the Benue people never witnessed in the state.
Within 2 years he has built industries, constructed standard underpasses and roads, changed primary school classes to duplex, has also given the state capital a face lift, paying salaries and pension before 25th of every month without delay, and many more. And this one again.

is there an airport in Benue?

why not get the airport to work instead of building a new one?

what is the reason the existing airport is not working?

I hope he succeeds with this. David Mark was a Military Governor, later Senate President, and spent nearly 20 years in the Senate, yet he couldn’t achieve anything meaningful for the state.

Instead of him to focus more on security . Investing 50% on security will yield significant progress in development than this airport of a thjng.
The man should also excuse himsekf from Isreal zionjst relationship. Those NGO's mean no good to Benue and Nigeria as a whole.

It belongs to the air force tactical air command although the FAAN uses a part of it for domestic airline operation (I think arik has a weekly flight going there) and is said to have the longest runway in Nigeria.... Cos of the fighter jets stationed there and the Hercules c130s that's also parked there ( my brother was a student at the air force secondary school and boarded the C130 free to Lagos many times then)

Airport still physically exist.

It is located beside the Airforce Base in Makurdi.

The state govt should partner with Airpeace and FG to make it operational once again....

There's definitely something evil in the water these politicians are drinking because why will you have a very poor state suffering massive basic infrastructure deficits yet your focus is an airport that 99.99% of the population will never use. Nigerian politicians are wicked
