Osimhen breaks record, becomes Nigeria’s top Champions League goal scorer

Super Eagles striker, Victor Osimhen, has become Nigeria’s all-time top scorer in the UEFA Champions League after scoring for Turkish side Galatasaray against Liverpool on Tuesday night.

Osimhen scored from the penalty spot in the 16th minute, taking his tally in the competition to 10 goals.

The strike moved him past former Inter Milan and Newcastle United forward Obafemi Martins, who scored nine goals in the competition.

Osimhen’s journey in the competition began with Lille, where he scored his first Champions League goal against Chelsea on 2 October 2019.

He became the first African to win the Serie A Golden Boot after scoring 26 league goals for Napoli in the 2022/23 season.


In 2023 he was named CAF African Footballer of the Year, the first Nigerian to claim the prize since Nwankwo Kanu in 1999.

He is one of our most brilliant attackers till date. Nigeria has talents but do we play fair in selecting talents into the national team.
I think the difference between women football and men's is the relative fairer selection criteria for the women team.

He isn't good at 1 on 1 with the keeper ,it happened in the Liverpool match .He should improve on this .He isn't a good striker, he's just average

Nigeria has never had a number 9 as good as Osimhen.
He's the only Nigerian number 9 to ever compete at the top level in Europe.

Premiership clubs were unserious about signing him, complaining about a meagre €75m for a player like Osimhen.

Napoli was also frustrating some transfer efforts. I think his move to Galatasaray was perfect and they were willing to pay 75m for him despite not having so much.
