Nigeria Boko Haram: Militants 'technically defeated' - Buhari
Published
24 December 2015

Nigeria has "technically won the war" against Islamist Boko Haram militants, President Muhammadu Buhari says.

He told the BBC that the militant group could no longer mount "conventional attacks" against security forces or population centres.

It had been reduced to fighting with improvised explosives devices (IED) and remained a force only in its heartland of Borno state, he said.

Boko Haram has been described as one of the world's deadliest terror groups.

Critics of the government argue that it has exaggerated the scale of its success against the militants, and that each time the army claims to have wiped out Boko Haram, the militants have quietly rebuilt.

Nnamdd1:
The Nigerian Army has handed over the flag of Boko Haram that was recovered from “camp zero” in Sambisa forest to President Muhammadu Buhari.

Major General Lucky Irabor, Theatre commander of Operation Lafiya Dole handed over the flag to Buhari at exactly 10:30 pm on Friday, December 30th, at this year’s regimental dinner organised by the presidential brigade of guards.

Speaking at Friday’s dinner, Irabor said troops arrested 1,240 suspected Boko Haram members during a mop-up operation inside Sambisa.

In his response, Buhari, who recounted how he was nearly killed even before he collected his first salary in the army stated that keeping Nigeria united was paramount.

“I believe you are here because you want to be here and you cannot complain. We will do our best to build the national institutions in the country,” he said.

“There are 250 ethnic groups, so keeping Nigeria one is a task that must be done. So even for a personal reason, you must make sure this country stays one and remain strong.”

On his part, Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai assured Nigerians that they will continue their onslaught in the north-east.

These are the kinds of reports that give the haters the kick.

Agreed that insecurity is proving intractable but, no one can't deny the fact that some progress is being made.

Lest we forget, there were times in the past when terrorists were detonating bombs in city centres, marketplaces, military barracks, etc but, no more.

Nigeria is under attack from within and from without.

Many foreigners, ably backed by local terrorists groups, are working in concert to bring Nigeria on her knees.

In neighbouring Cameroon, the situation is the same.

The Nigeria army is overstretched and can't possibly man each and every part of the country at the same time.

Besides, this is not a conventional warfare but assymetrical (hit and run) .

Again, our porous borders make it extremely difficult to contain these surprise attacks.

Man to man, these cowards can't stand our gallant security forces.

Nigeria shall soon find a way around this problem if all Nigerians come together as one people in confronting these enemies of Nigeria and not working at cross purposes.

The likes of Sheikh Gumi are a serious threat to our beloved country and must be contained.

Alleged genocide: Congressman urges Trump to designate Nigeria ‘Country of Particular Concern’
By : Guardian Nigeria
Date: 8 Oct 2025

• Tinubu once alluded to Christian genocide in Nigeria, Atiku’s aide claims
• CAN dismisses Christian genocide claims, urges action against terrorism

A lawmaker representing West Virginia’s Second District in the United States House of Congress, Riley Moore, has written to President Donald Trump, calling on White House to designate Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) over what he described as the “systematic persecution and slaughter of Christians”.

Paul Ibe, Media Aide to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, yesterday, accused President Bola Tinubu of alluding to a Christian genocide in Nigeria in 2014.

Ibe said U.S. Senator, Ted Cruz, might have adopted Tinubu’s claims on the alleged killing of Christians in Nigeria.

He recalled a post on Tinubu’s X page in 2014 which reads: “The slaughtering of Christian worshippers is strongly condemnable. It calls to question the competence of Jonathan to protect Nigerians.”

Ibe posted on X: “For the records, Tinubu had in 2014 alluded to a Christian genocide in Nigeria. Perhaps, Cruz simply adopted Tinubu’s memo when he (Cruz) claimed without adducing any shred of evidence that there’s a Christian genocide in Nigeria.”

Meanwhile, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has dismissed recent claims of a Christian genocide in Nigeria, describing them as exaggerated narratives promoted by foreign actors.

The controversy arose after U.S. comedian, Bill Maher, alleged that Christians were being systematically killed in Nigeria.

Maher alleged that Islamists had burnt down churches and were attempting to wipe out the Christian population of an entire country.

In the letter, dated October 6, 2025, addressed to the U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, the Congressman urged the State Department to take swift diplomatic action against Nigeria and suspend arms sales until the Nigerian government demonstrates a genuine commitment to ending religiously-motivated violence.

Moore wrote: “I write to urge you to take immediate action to address the systematic persecution and slaughter of Christians in Nigeria. As a Christian nation founded upon Biblical principles, the U.S. bears a unique obligation to stand for the freedom and protection of Christians worldwide. Nigeria has become the deadliest place in the world to be a Christian, and the U.S. cannot stand idly by.

“I urge you to use all diplomatic tools available, including designating Nigeria a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) and halting arms sales and all associated technical support until the Nigerian government demonstrates it is sufficiently committed to ending this reign of persecution and slaughter.”

He cited figures from Open Doors and other humanitarian reports, noting that over 7,000 Christians had been killed in Nigeria in 2025 alone, averaging 35 murders per day.

Special Adviser to Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, also refuted allegations by Moore, who claimed that Nigerian officials were turning a blind eye to, or even aiding, the mass killing of Christians by Islamist militants.

Pastor Adeboye to Tinubu: Order service chiefs to defeat terrorists in 90 days or resign
Rachael Omidiji
November 8, 2025

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has urged President Bola Tinubu to act swiftly, wisely, and diplomatically in addressing the growing concerns about the alleged Christian genocide in Nigeria.

Speaking during November Holy Ghost Service at the Redemption City camp ground, Adeboye said that the government must adopt a balanced and strategic approach to the security challenges confronting the nation.

“If I am asked to make suggestions, I will say quietly to the governments to move wisely, diplomatically,” he said. “I have cousins. There were times in Nigeria when Christians and Muslims were living together. I have families that are Muslims till date. When I was little, I ate sari with them, and I still eat my breakfast, but the issue of religion started when politics came into religion.”

Adeboye explained that he had previously advised past presidents privately on security and religious matters but emphasised that such efforts were limited since only the Commander-in-Chief has the power to take decisive action.

“All the presidents who were around when this trouble started, whatever I discussed is top privacy. I have done my best behind the scene, but as I have always told you, you can only advise a Commander-in-Chief; you cannot command him. But I have tried. God is my witness.”

The cleric then outlined what he would do if given the opportunity to advise the government again.

“What should we do now? If I was asked to make suggestions, I will say quietly to our government: move fast, move diplomatically, move wisely. Find a way to convince the President of America to please delay his actions for about 100 days, and then come home and tell our security chiefs to get rid of these terrorists within 90 days or resign.”

He recalled a similar directive issued by former President Muhammadu Buhari, which he said was not effectively followed through.

“There was a President, Buhari, who issued such an order. He called the service chiefs together and said, ‘Get rid of these Boko Haram people or resign.’ He ran with that advice but he did not follow through because he gave the order as the Commander, but he did not follow up. The work was not done after three months, so I went to see him. I asked him, ‘Why did you not proceed with your threat?’ One thing came out of the meeting which will lead me to the advice.”

Adeboye further advised that any new order from President Tinubu to the military should go beyond fighting insurgents to targeting their financiers and backers.

“When giving orders to the service chiefs this time around, he should make it clear to them they are not only to eliminate the terrorists but also eliminate the sponsors, no matter how influential they may be.”

He also cautioned that Nigeria should tread carefully in its diplomatic dealings with global powers, warning that no foreign nation would come to its rescue if conflict escalates.

“When I say our leaders should move diplomatically, we must take note of the fact that if America should attack us, China is not coming to defend us. Likewise Russia and Britain. All the so-called world leaders, they will talk and condemn what America has done, but they won’t help us.”

Adeboye emphasised that the moment called for action rather than debate or excuses.

“This is not the time to joke. This is not the time for grammar, not time to argue, is it suicide or kidnap? This is not the time to say it’s not Christians alone, Muslims are also involved. Innocent people are dying.”

The cleric said he was nearly moved to respond publicly after hearing a recent speech by President Tinubu, whom he referred to as his in-law, particularly the portion that painted a positive picture of the security situation in the country.

“I almost spoke last month when I heard the speech of my in-law (Tinubu), particularly that section that spoke about security. I heard him saying, all is well now, that displaced people have returned to their villages. I almost said the one who wrote that speech does not like him. Somebody wrote it, but it was the President who read it. There are several people around Tinubu who are not telling him the truth. The following day we read that a traditional ruler was killed in Kwara or Kogi.”

Adeboye stressed that the current administration inherited a longstanding crisis but must now focus on concrete solutions.

“Our President inherited this problem. I am an applied mathematician; I am only interested in getting the problem solved.”

He restated his earlier call for diplomacy with the United States, suggesting that the Nigerian government should engage with U.S. President Donald Trump for a temporary reprieve while demanding accountability from security chiefs.

“Let the government use diplomatic methods to convince Trump to give us 100 days of grace to call our service chiefs to perform within three months or resign. Now, where do you come in?”

Adeboye concluded on a note of hope, reminding his congregation of God’s promise of peace despite turbulent times.

“I shared with you, my children, that God said this will be a remarkable year, that the wind blowing last year will be more violent this year. Any time we have meetings like this, God picks the topic. By this time next week, we will be having the Holy Ghost service in Abuja. He gave us the theme, ‘Fear not,’ that months ago before Trump spoke. One way or the other, there will be peace again in Nigeria.”

200 dead as rival Jihadist groups clash in Northeast Nigeria – Report
By : AFP
Date: 10 November 2025 11:57am WAT

Clashes between rival jihadist factions in northeast Nigeria have claimed some 200 lives in the restive Lake Chad area, intelligence, militia, and jihadist sources told AFP Monday.

Fighting between Boko Haram and rival militants from the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) group broke out in Dogon Chiku on the shores of Lake Chad on Sunday, in the latest bout of infighting for territorial control fuelled by ideological rifts.

“From the toll we got, around 200 ISWAP terrorists were killed in the fight,” Babakura Kolo, a member of an anti-jihadist militia assisting the Nigerian military, told AFP.

A former Boko Haram jihadist, who has since renounced violence but follows jihadist activities in the region, also said “around 200 ISWAP fighters were killed in the clashes”, with several of their weapons seized.

Boko Haram lost four fighters in the battle, according to the former militant, who asked to be identified only by his first name, Saddiku.
“This could be the worst clash between the two groups since they began attacking each other,” said Saddiku, who lives in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state, the epicentre of the insurgency.

A Nigerian intelligence source working in the region said they were following the aftermath of the clashes, estimating that they “killed more than 150”.

“We are aware of the fighting, which is good news to us,” the intelligence source said.

ISWAP and Boko Haram have been locked in a deadly struggle for territorial control since their split in 2016 over ideological differences, with much of the fighting taking place around Lake Chad.

Meanwhile, farmers in parts of Zamfara and Sokoto States have raised alarm over increasing levies and intimidation by armed bandits, who they say are imposing conditions on communities for this year’s harvest season.

Residents told The Guardian that despite favourable rainfall in recent years, widespread attacks have turned farmlands into conflict zones, putting farmers in constant fear and threatening food supplies across northern Nigeria.

Villagers reported that bandits have introduced what they describe as “harvest taxes,” demanding payments in cash or agricultural produce before allowing farmers to access or harvest their fields.

According to community sources, in some locations, the armed groups allegedly mount checkpoints around villages, collect levies, and punish those unable to meet their demands.

“We are living under a parallel authority,” said a farmer from Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State, who requested anonymity for security reasons.

“They gave us a timetable on when to go to our farms, how much to pay, and they also take a portion of our grains. Those who refuse are attacked or abducted,” he added.

Despite Tinubu’s Promises To End Terrorism, Bandit Attacks, Kidnappings Persist Across Nigeria
November 21, 2025
NEWS

In 2022, when the All Progressives Congress released its manifesto for its then–presidential candidate (now Nigeria’s President), Bola Ahmed Tinubu, it was expressly stated that under his administration, terrorism and banditry would become a thing of the past.

In the manifesto, Tinubu promised to "establish a bold and assertive policy that will create a strong yet adaptive national security architecture and action to obliterate terror, kidnapping, banditry, and all other forms of violent extremism from the face of our nation."

On May 29, 2023, during his inaugural speech, Tinubu also declared, "We shall defend the nation from terror and all forms of criminality that threaten the peace and stability of our country and our subregion.

"Security shall be the top priority of our administration because neither prosperity nor justice can prevail amidst insecurity and violence.

"To effectively tackle this menace, we shall reform both our security doctrine and its architecture."

"We shall invest more in our security personnel, and this means more than an increase in number. We shall provide, better training, equipment, pay and firepower," he said.

Despite these pledges, Nigerians have continued to suffer the consequences of persistent insecurity, including kidnappings, killings, and the destruction of property.

No fewer than 25 students were abducted from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area, early Monday morning, as confirmed by the Kebbi State Police Command.

The attack, carried out by heavily armed bandits, left one staff member dead and another injured. This was disclosed in a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Nafi’u Abubakar Kotarkoshi.

The incident reportedly occurred around 4:00 a.m., when the assailants stormed the school and engaged police officers on duty in a fierce gun battle. Despite the officers’ efforts, the attackers scaled the school’s perimeter fence and forcibly removed the students from their hostel.

The police spokesperson confirmed that one Hassan Makuku lost his life during the attack, while Ali Shehu sustained gunshot injuries to his right hand.

Following the incident, the state police commissioner, Bello Muhammad Sani, deployed additional police tactical units, alongside military personnel and vigilante groups, to the area.

In Kwara State, the government ordered the immediate closure of schools across four local government areas following rising insecurity in parts of the state.

The directive, issued on Wednesday, was disclosed by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Kwara State wing, which confirmed that the shutdown affected schools in Isin, Irepodun, Ifelodun, and Ekiti LGAs.

According to a circular obtained by Channels Television, the NUT Chairman, Yusuf Agboola, said the union acted based on an official instruction from the Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development, after authorities raised concerns about fresh security threats in Kwara South.

Agboola conveyed the state government’s directive, stating: "Comrade chairmen, this is to inform you and through you, all schools in the above local governments of the instruction to close down all schools with immediate effect until further notice."

He added that the decision was driven by ongoing security concerns in the affected communities.

The circular further read: "This decision was occasioned by the security challenges ravaging the area and the efforts of the government to control the situation. Treat this information as important and with the urgency it deserves, as it emanated from the ministry.”

SaharaReporters also reported rising tension in Bokungi Village, Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State, after terrorists reportedly killed two of the four rice farmers abducted on Wednesday.

A community source told SaharaReporters that the victims were seized while working on their farms, sparking panic among residents who have endured repeated attacks in recent months.

Barely 24 hours earlier, terrorists had abducted four rice farmers in the same community, shortly after gunmen invaded a church in Eruku, Ekiti LGA.

In the last week of October, gunmen suspected to be bandits abducted nine passengers travelling from Isanlu Makutu in Yagba East Local Government Area of Kogi State to Ilorin, Kwara State.

According to reports obtained by SaharaReporters, the victims were kidnapped when the attackers ambushed their vehicle between Egbe and Eruku, a border community linking Kogi and Kwara states.

On Thursday, gunmen reportedly attacked Kurawa, a community in Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State, killing two people and abducting 15 others, including four nursing mothers and their babies.

More states across the country have suffered similar fates under the watch of President Bola Tinubu.

During this period, United States President Donald Trump designated Nigeria as a country of particular concern, threatening military action over what he described as "genocide against Christians".

The Nigerian government has repeatedly vowed to end insecurity although its security "blueprint" continues to struggle to prevent violent attacks across various regions.

Despite these pledges, Nigerians have continued to suffer the consequences of persistent insecurity, including kidnappings, killings, and the destruction of property.

Tinubu Government Confirms Jihadist Extremism From North-East, Says Nigerian Christians, Muslims Are Being Killed

The President Bola Tinubu-led Nigerian government says it is not denying the scale of killings across the country but is taking "significant steps" to address security challenges in Nigeria.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated this during an appearance on Channels Television’s programme on Friday.

“Yes, we have people being killed, no doubt about that, and the government is not shying away or denying this,” the minister said.

He explained that some deaths arise from religious tensions, economic pressures, and persistent communal clashes, especially in the Middle Belt.

Idris added that no administration gains anything from allowing such violence and noted that the President is “deeply saddened” by every life lost.

“Do we have people killed? Yes. Is it a good thing? No. Is the government doing anything? Quite a lot.
“We should not have a situation where anybody is killed, whether Christians or Muslims,” the minister said.

The information minister once again dismissed suggestions of religious genocide, insisting that both Christians and Muslims suffer from extremist violence.

“You have jihadist extremism coming from the North-East, and this is a sixteen-year struggle,” he noted.

He stressed that the extremists kill both Muslims and Christians, making the genocide narrative inaccurate.

The minister added that before President Donald Trump’s redesignation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC), President Tinubu had already overhauled the security architecture by replacing service chiefs to strengthen operations.

Trump had threatened to send U.S. forces into Nigeria with “guns-a-blazing” if attacks on Christians continued.

He urged the Nigerian government to act fast.

A recent report revealed that the U.S. military had drafted contingency plans for possible intervention in Nigeria.
Trump directed the Pentagon to prepare options to protect Christians from terrorist attacks.

Some U.S. officials warned that isolated airstrikes will not resolve the insurgency without a broader campaign, which Washington is unwilling to launch.

However, President Tinubu’s government has repeatedly dismissed Trump’s claim that Nigeria is hostile to Christians.

In a personally signed statement, Tinubu said the description “does not reflect our national reality.”

He noted ongoing engagement with Christian and Muslim leaders since 2023 to resolve security challenges.

On Thursday, the US House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa held a hearing on Trump’s decision to redesignate Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern.

The session, titled “A Serious, Well-Founded Wake-Up Call,” examined allegations of religious-freedom violations and Nigeria’s response to insecurity.

Senior State Department officials Jonathan Pratt and Jacob McGee testified about attacks by Boko Haram and armed militias on minority communities.

Committee Chairman, Chris Smith, argued that Nigeria faces “systematic, ongoing, egregious violations of religious freedom.”

Lawmakers debated whether Nigeria has failed to curb the violence and considered sanctions, visa bans, and stricter conditions on U.S. assistance.

A comprehensive investigation into the activities of kidnappers and bandits across northern Nigeria reveals a complex web of criminal operations involving suspected kingpins, collaborators, and potential connections with politically exposed persons.

The Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) findings, based on a September 2020 intelligence report, span the North-West and North-East regions and provide detailed insights into the identities, movements, and alleged activities of hundreds of suspects.

North-West Axis: Katsina, Zamfara, and Kaduna Under Siege

The report highlights the North-West as a hotspot for kidnapping and banditry, with Katsina, Zamfara, and Kaduna states heavily affected.

Several high-profile suspects were identified in the report.

According to the report, Samaila Ibrahim (aka Kachalla, Dan Antuna), 24, operating out of Kaduna and Katsina, was reportedly involved in the abduction of Abdullahi Carpenter along the Kaduna–Abuja Expressway.

He is suspected of sourcing weapons or drugs through an associate, “Iliya Kaya.”

Aliyu Abubakar Umar, aka Lalbi 1 and Laibi 2, 25, is linked to multiple kidnappers and is suspected to have connections with law enforcement collaborators and local political figures.

Aish Buhari, 35, allegedly communicates internationally with France and Ghana and has strong ties to the Lalbi network.

Nasiru Mani, aka Sada Lawal, 26, a suspected kidnapper in Katsina, reportedly coordinates with Ibrahim Umaru (Ardo Alti) and receives communications from the Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association (MACBAN) at odd hours, suggesting possible logistical support for banditry operations.

Umar Sani (Uzairu), 83, maintains communications with suspected kidnappers at flashpoints across the North-West.

The report also identifies several suspected informants and logistics operators, including Ashiru Salisu, Shaaibu Sulaiman, and Sani Farouk, who allegedly provide critical support for abductions, ransom collection, and coordination across Katsina and Zamfara.
