That means you have to meet night fall. Isn’t it a little too risky to travel this long on Nigerian roads with the security situation we are in?
Very risky, I must confess.

But I was pretty busy yesterday, and I had to submit some documents at the court by noon today.

No idea who they're referring to but it reminds me of a line of JayZ rap verse in Coldplay's lost remix.

And the question is, "Is to have had and lost better than not having at all?"

It happened to Obj. And likely a lot of first Gen politicians and leaders. I think marwa was also quietly broke before he was made ndlea boss. Same for Buhari and ptf.

I am from ilorin and the late general Adisa would almost certainly be broke if he was alive.

If you retire to your non viable home state to run a business built off looted funds same thing will happen

We may see it happen to Dino melaiye. It may be happening right now to Saraki. He owned the heritage bank that crashed. Also may have partially happened to the owners of bellview air. I know they rebranded as medview at one time.

Sometimes all it takes is a bad economic cycle and no support. Or betting company on bitcoin.

I can't really think of any single individual I know that has held those 3 positions in Nigeria ;bank CEO, State governor and a federal minister.

It has happened to many people too. I know a former governor in this 4th republic that is openly owing people up and down now. He don broke, He has been trying to smuggle himself into Senate unsuccessfully

Its actually easy for the politicians and people in govt to go broke once they leave power. While in power they barely spend personal money

I had a family member who was a top civil servant, All the food they eat at home was on govt expense, You know state govt always have a budget for Xmas, Ileya etc where they buy bags of foodstuff to share to govt workers and sometimes public. That is always the food supply of top people, In Xmas season they will drop like 10 bags of rice in his house and meat, by Ileya same thing etc

To repair vehicle no concern them, that is on govt,, to buy diesel for generator same thing, First class flight tickets abroad same thing on govt

By the time they are leaving govt, they have no idea how much it cost to run their house without "subsidy". By the time they adjust to reality of life outside govt its too late

The politicians is also same or slightly worse because one failed election run can gulp everything you have. That is why if you have 10bn its better to invest 8bn into remaining in power than try to walk away with the 10bn. Almost all former governors are eyeing Senate permanent seat

Its why former governors in SW from PDP almost all of them are now in APC(ruling party) or have been there at some point.

All those Mimiko, Oyinlola, Late Akala(minus his son who is a HoR), Lam Adesina, etc might be flirting with brokeness now if they are alive without govt patronage

I think this only applies to those who wants to keep living extravagant lifestyle and be throwing money about when they are out of office.

Any ex-governor that wants to live a modest life outside of public office will still be quite rich. Most of them would have different shell companies they set up while in office which they would be using to get contracts from government either in their own state or other friendly states.

I also noticed u mis-classified Oyinlola amongst ex-governors that may be flirting with brokenness. Don't forget Oyinlola was a former military administrator of Lagos before the advent of computers under the corrupt military government of yesteryears. The man retired a brigadier general in the Nigerian army and most likely still gets his pension and other benefits that comes with that. The man still served on NIMC board under Buhari's government. If we add whatever he made as civilian governor and whatever contracts he still gets till now, I don't see how he can be flirting with brokenness o.

Hmmm. This portfolio seems odd, considering the fact that he said the person was a Bank CEO.

But it's no surprise if a Nigerian Senator crashes. They establish businesses while in power, because they can, and not because they can actually run it.

Also, their businesses blossom while in power because of their influence. This is Obi's school, Wike's hotel, blah blah blah. The moment they lose all sources of their influence, then they fact the reality.

I don't know that Yuguda is broke but I know he meets the criteria above.

Not having had at all -You never get money before. You go still get hope and believe say breakthrough dey come, and that keeps you going.

To have had and lost - This one dey brutal. Its more difficult to bear. You were once Aliko Dangote. You come crash, hit rock bottom and lose all your wealth. Everyone abandon you. Your mind no go touch ground and na your mental health go first go. The overthinking fit kpai you sef

This is likely what happened to heritage bank. Saraki is out of political favor and so they chose not to cover for him. Same for Ben Murray Bruce and Co.

Infact when you think of it a lot of Nigerian wealth is smoke mirrors and old boy network. How many big men are owing banks humongous debts?

In front of us Cecilia ibru ran oceanic bank into the ground. If Sanusi had looked the other way oceanic bank might still be standing today. Or nit. But after that she started overseeing aero contractors and she has run that into the ground as well.

With Oyinlola I grouped it by their set I mean those first/2nd set of governors who have been out of power for 15yrs.

Actually most of them are still involved in politics so they spend money hoping something will come through. Oyinlola and Omisore were shut up by Adeleke with money in Osun power play

When you are involved in politics, you still have to drop money regularly in your constituency to remain relevant, even when you are not earning again. Even if you are just doing godfather for a candidate, you still need to drop money for people regularly

Those NIMC appointment are the friends in politics/govt trying to rehabilitate them. Let me ask, Are pensions recalculated to reflect current economic realities? I mean someone awarded 2m per month pension in 1999 will the money be increased to match current rates

To continue getting contracts from govt, you need to have your allies that are still in power, Also these loyalties are fleeting once people dont have anything concrete to gain from you they start blanking you. Don't be shocked if some politicians are starting to ghost Ekweremadu, Dimeji Bankole and Saraki phone calls. Them don dey turn "Old takers" in the field of politics. What can you offer me to keep getting contracts when I can give that contract to people still relevant and will repay me

Politics money is not real money like that. Its not like they have a product. They just benefit from their influence and patronage due to being in power, Once they leave power and that influence and need for patronage reduce, reality hits hard

The quick fix is to get back into power

Dont you think its suspicious that Saraki after 2 time governor, 2 times Senate is still trying to wiggle his way back or OGD after 2 terms Gov was on the bench for 12yrs and found his way back into Senate (Maybe the Maths no dey Math like before again), Akala was still contesting for Senate before he died, Mimiko still contested for Senate in 2019,

And talking about owing bank. I heard that Erastus Akingbola alleged that the debt of powerful people like Saraki was among what wrecked his bank and he couldnt go after them legally because they were in power

I would not write Oyinlola off with the rest of his stlet honestly. Oyinlola has never been known to he amongst those politicians who throw money at everyone and everything. There's no record of him being that buje-budanu that may be at risk of spending more than what he made.

There's a reason why a veteran like him doesn't really have Osun State's political structure in his pocket. I have a feeling the man has money and rarely spends it. That's why u see new takers like Adeleke aligning with dem Aregbesola instead of someone like Oyinlola

Banks advertised aggressively in those days, and their ads were so glamorous and audacious. I mean, their ads were by far the best on TV especially Bank PHB, Societe Generale Bank, Oceanic Bank and All States Trust Bank.

The ads featured handsome, immaculately dressed. successful-looking and smooth talking men and women doing the most out-of-the world things. Even the accompanying soundtracks and slogans were memorable. I remember BankPHB's own in particular, impossible is nothing and one day cars will run on water.

Okocha must have been enticed by Societe General Bank:s advert for him to have lodged $1m in the newbie bank because even then, there were older, stronger, and time-tested banks in the country
