Breaking News!! Olu Of Warri Gets Rival Itsekiri King Of Same Warri(Photos)!! by Toruibestate(op): 5:50pm On Oct 02, 2025
His Royal Majesty Ayiri Emami
Olu of Ugborodo Itsekiri part of Warri.

HOW THE OLU BECAME THE OVERLORD ( OWNER) OF UGBORODO/ OGIDIGBEN LANDS.

Ugborodo is reckoned by the Itsekiris as amongst the 5 aboriginal Itsekiri Communities. By 5 aboriginal Itsekiri Communities, we mean Itsekiri Communities that were founded and owned by the Aboriginal Itsekiris ( then called Mahins), before Ginuwa arrived from BENIN to be their Olu.

These 5 aboriginal ITSEKIRIS are Ugborodo ( Ogidigben), Omadino, Ureju, inoin and Okorotomu.

Okorotomu later became Ode Itsekiri.

So every Itsekiri knows that Ugborodo people Founded and owned their lands centuries before the Olu came from BENIN.

So how did the Olu became the owner of their land??

Many of you will think, well as soon as he became their King, he became the new owner of their land.

But that is not True, in our culture, the king is not the Owner of family lands. Or is your king the owner of your own family land??
The King in our culture is the trustee of lands within his kingdom, not the owner.
So one can be a king over you, yet not the owner of your land

And it has been so even among the Itsekiris. The Olu family only owned the lands of ode Itsekiri, he was the King of all other Itsekiri Communities, but certainly not the owner of their lands. He was only a trustee.

But the British arrived to colonize us, and over there, the British monarch was the Overlord of all British lands, they came through the Statutes of General applications to apply British Doctrines to colonize us.
Chief Dore Numa quickly understood this concept and keyed into it to bring many lands of Urhobos, Ijaws and Itsekiris under the Overlordship of the Olu, since he was the Person occupying that office Then.

So it happened then that a Descendant of Olu Akengbuwa went to Ogidigben Waters to fish, without taking Permission from Ogidigben people. His name was Edede, son of Prince Yonwuren,. Prince Yonwuren was from Ugbuwangue, and himself was a son to Olu Akengbuwa. The Ogidigben people apprehended him (Edede) , and asked him why ....He replied that as a Descendant of the Olu he had the exclusive rights to fish in any water in Itsekiri Kingdom as all Itsekiri lands and waters were the Olu Property
This angered the Ogidigben people, and they wanted to deal with him.
But he quickly ran to Dore Numa to report the matter.

And so in 1921, Chief Dore Numa quickly caught in on this opportunity.
He sued the the Ugborodo people of Ogidigben. Their head then was one Chief Olue., ....Dore dragged him to court that all Ugborodo lands are under the Overlordship of the Olu.

When the Matter came before the British colonial courts, ..they advised both Parties to settle the matter out of court and submit their terms of settlement to the courts.

One Chief SKINN, and other eminent Itsekiris, then mediated and settled the matter.

That 1) Ugborodo people will continue to occupy their lands Provided they recognize the Overlordship of the Olu over their lands
2) That Ugborodo people cannot sell their lands to strangers without first seeking the consent of the Olu

3) That the Olu cannot reasonably eject Ugborodo people from their lands.
4) Tributes from Ugborodo lands be paid to the Olu.

And some more, I Will post a snapshot later.

This consent Judgement was thus submitted to the courts and it became a force of law

I am writing this because I have told the Itsekiris many times, that Agbassa people like the Ugborodo people, founded and owned their lands until the British came and put it under the Overlordship of the Olu using the courts.

How?? Immediately in 1921, this Happened, Pessu Ebiowa founder of Pessu town who was an omajaja, in order to save his lands from being grabbed keyed into this concept, as this concept became extended over all Itsekiri lands under Dore.Numa

But Agbassa land was very close to Pessu land and resisted this doctrine. Although they Founded their lands , the British used this doctrine to rule against them.

Even when their lawyer Bucknor (Esq), subpoena the Lt.Gov of Southern Nigerian, Lt governor M.C Moorhouse to bring out the Treaty their Ancestors signed with the British in 1893, the Judge refused.

The court used Laches, acquiescence and Overlordship to decide the Matter.

But what happened after Independence.??

The Olu wanted to make use of Ugbuwangue lands.
Ugbuwangue unlike Ugborodo was Founded long after the Olus started ruling the Itsekiris.
Ugbuwangue was Founded by the uwangue around 1810.
And Prince Yonwuren has large tracts of lands there.

So in all ramifications if Ugborodo land is owned by the Olu, then Ugbuwangue should also be owned by the OLU.
But the Ugbuwangue people led by Chief Arthur Prest, went to court that the doctrine of Overlordship of the Olu over Itsekiri lands WAS ALIEN TO ITSEKIRI CULTURE.....

YOU see that?? Same reason used in grabbing Ugborodo, Agbarha and Ogbe Ijoh lands under Colonialism is now being opposed.

AND SURPRISINGLY, THE UGBUWANGUE PEOPLE WON THE CASE..... TODAY THEY OWN THEIR LAND, nevertheless they recognize the Olu as their King. That is what is also obtainable amongst the Urhobos and the Ijaws.

Then the Olu wanted to use Overlordship too to take over Okere land.

The Okere people resisted. They were able to proof that they founded their lands, and the Overlordship of the Olu did not extend to their lands.
In fact this decision split Okere town into 2....the Urhobos now have their own kingdom.

Now that you have read this, who do you think should rightly be adjudged as the owner of any land Traditionally.??

a) The king of that Community
b) The family whose ANCESTORS first founded the land??

I enjoyed how the Olu was trying to colonise land that wasn't his, then the above brought Israel-Palestine to mind, though you might not have intended it might.

Israel is inviting Europeans to come and claim ancestry, no proof required, who then claim land that others have acquired ancestry over, is the difference.

But diverting only makes me not seem to appreciate the depicted Itsekiri culture, which I do.

Before the ottoman empire there was the Roman empire that colonized the land of Israel. So how does Arabians become the owners of the land of Israel, since they were not the first aborigines of that land?

One does not need to be "first aborigines" to own land.

Imagine my Yoruba grandfather bought land in Aba and willed it to my father who willed it to me. Would you agree the first aboriginal Abanians have the right to take the land off me because I'm not an Aba aborigin?

Normally if you win a war you annex land...

Israel won Egypt in 1967 took Sinai but down the years they returned it back to Egypt. That's y till date Egypt can't look for their trouble. The same with Jordan when Israel won them and took the Golan height in the six days six nations war against newly formed Israel.

So before u fight a nation you think twice. Russia beat Ukraine and took some towns recently
