Kaduna 2011 To Lagos 2027: Is Nigeria Sleepwalking Into Another Electoral Chaos by OredoPikin(op): 7:28am On Oct 04, 2025
With Nigeria’s 2027 general elections on the horizon, concerns are mounting over rising ethnic tensions and politically motivated threats, particularly in Lagos. From the devastating 2011 post-election violence in Kaduna to the disturbing voter suppression seen in Lagos in 2023, and now recent threats by a powerful transport union boss, the warning signs are clear. But perhaps even more alarming is the silence, and alleged complicity, of the current government.

2011: Kaduna Burned — A Warning Ignored

In April 2011, following the presidential election, violence erupted across Northern Nigeria. Kaduna State, with its deeply divided religious and ethnic lines, became the epicenter. Supporters of then-candidate Muhammadu Buhari reacted violently to his loss to Goodluck Jonathan, triggering riots that left more than 800 dead and thousands displaced. The violence quickly morphed from political unrest to full-blown ethnic and religious conflict.

This tragedy was a wake-up call about the dangers of identity politics and a weak state response. But over a decade later, it appears that the lessons have not been learned.

2023: Lagos Elections Mark a Dangerous Shift

Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial and cultural heartbeat, witnessed an unusual wave of voter suppression and ethnic profiling during the 2023 general elections. Many voters, especially from the Igbo community, reported being threatened, attacked, or turned away from polling stations simply for being perceived as non-Yoruba or opposition supporters.

Social media was flooded with videos and eyewitness accounts of thugs intimidating voters and warning them not to vote against the ruling party, APC. What shocked many Lagosians was the open, brazen nature of these acts, and the complete lack of response from state authorities.

Far from condemning these acts, the state government remained largely silent. In fact, some local sources and political observers allege that politicians within the current administration not only turned a blind eye, but also funded individuals and groups to fan the flames of ethnic division, all in the name of retaining power.

This silence, and rumored sponsorship of hate, has only deepened public distrust and resentment, especially among ethnic minorities who call Lagos home.

2027: Sego’s Threat and the Worsening Climate

In late 2025, Mustapha Adekunle, better known as Sego, the Lagos State Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), was caught on video threatening Lagos residents ahead of the 2027 elections. In his own words, anyone who refuses to vote for the APC “will be dealt with.

Final Word
The road to 2027 does not have to mirror the chaos of 2011. But without urgent action and political will, Lagos may become the new symbol of how power, silence, and hate can tear a nation apart, starting from within.

Despite being summoned by the Department of State Services (DSS), Sego walked free, claiming his comments were misunderstood. But many see this as part of a larger pattern, one where street-level enforcers and loyalists are empowered to make threats with no real consequences, as long as they protect the interests of the ruling party.

Why are you people so fixated about Lagos state. Lagos state is just one state out of the 36 states we have in Nigeria.

We have read about threats from people from other states but you people never react to that.

This hypocrisy of a thing actually stinks

They claimed Lagos state election in 2023 was marred with violence yet president Tinubu lose the state to an outsider.

They claimed the election was rigged yet other candidates won their respective states, respective regions.

Could you please point out to where I endorsed Sego's threat statement? Is Sego speaking on behalf of Lagosians or just expressing himself?

President Tinubu will win the 2027 election convincingly without rigging or intimidation. That, I can bet anything with it

As some once said; "Violence is the last refuge of incompetence being employed by the APC..."

However where your madness stops, another person's own starts. Be careful what you sow, its has ripple effects. Meanwhile the DSS and NPF heard him well but they will defend him as usual

There is no election they do not threaten other ethnic groups. Why are they afraid of free and fair elections?

You people can't dictate what others should do in their land. If you are not ready to abide by rules of the land, stay put in your region. Nobody is dragging you people to come to other people's land

You guys should stop taking Panadol for someone else headache.

Alhaji Tafa Sego only address his NURTW boys under him and told them their union is for APC and any member of the union must not entertain other party and anyone found doing so will be expelled from NURTW in Lagos.

So how is this a threat to anyone?

Election is still far away you guys have started with your propaganda as usual. Tafa Sego message is for his boys, the member of NURTW Lagos branch.

He didn't even mention yellow bus drivers, or market women selling at their various parks. His warning is directed strictly to his boys.

Leave North and stop talking with double mouth. We saw video of meeting in Abia State where they said they want to come and hijack power in Lagos after they have transferred over 500,000 of their voters cards into Lagos.

We saw videos of APC members humiliated l, beaten for voting for APC in the SE.

We have many videos of your brothers and sisters directed to APC members not to attempt to come out and vote.

The rooster will come home to roost for those people supporting hooliganism in Lagos state just because those hooligans temporarily shift their attention to their “perceived enemies”.

No one ever associated with area boys in the past, but now we have a political party that emboldens them just because they feel they’re useful to them now.

Boko Haram started out just like this.
