Police in Moradabad busted a pan-India cyber fraud network responsible for duping people of over ₹100 crore on the pretext of providing overseas employment and marriage.

They also impersonated customs officers to gain trust and siphon off money. The racket was allegedly orchestrated by Nigerian national Chinweoke Enmanuel Kanu with assistance of Nepali accomplices.

The cyberfraud came to light when a teacher in Moradabad complained that she was duped of ₹94 lakh, by Kanu by posing as an American doctor and looking for a bride. Moradabad SP (City) Kunwar Ranvijay Singh said the victim's complaint led to the registration of a case under BNS sections 319(2) and 317(2) and section 66D of the IT Act against unidentified accused.

A probe revealed that the gang had been operating from Delhi since 2020, targeting victims across 18 states.
Over 37 police complaints were filed against the gang.

Last month, authorities arrested two members of the gang -- Konsam Sunita from Manipur and Navi from Delhi. On Thursday, Kanu and his aides, Sangeeta Bahadur and Mamta, were nabbed from Delhi and Noida, respectively.

Police said the syndicate had opened over 100 bank accounts to facilitate fraudulent transfer of money. A police raid resulted in the seizure of 16 ATM cards, 17 cheque books, fake IDs, mobile phones, SIM cards, POS machines and ₹47,770 cash.

Kanu, who had earlier operated a travel agency, allegedly turned to cyber fraud during the Covid-19 lockdown.

Police reports indicate that he used proceeds of crime to build a lavish mansion and buy luxury cars in Nigeria.

The gang exploited platforms like Shaadi.com to create fictitious profiles of doctors. After matching the profiles with potential victims, they lured individuals into their trap with promises of expensive gifts from abroad. Subsequently, team members posing as customs officers extorted large sums of money, which were promptly withdrawn from ATMs.

The gang also created fake profiles on Instagram, offering to sell expensive gifts at discounted prices.

Co-accused Mamta and Sangeeta were instrumental in luring individuals to open bank accounts, which were then used for fraudulent activities.

In a recent case, the gang contacted a woman using different mobile numbers and told her that a parcel had arrived from America. Identifying themselves as "parcel service representatives" and "customs officers", they claimed the package contained valuables, including gold, and threatened to implicate her in a money laundering case.

The woman was forced to transfer a total of ₹94.78 lakh.

Examination of nine accounts associated with the accused on National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP) revealed 37 complaints were registered across 18 states, including Karnataka, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Puducherry, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Delhi, Telangana, Manipur, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Bihar and Punjab.

A probe is on to find out the extent of the network and apprehend the remaining gang members, if any.

If not because the owner of this site is on their side...

Foreign countries would have been well informed that a small segment of the country are inherently criminal.

That is the training they receive from their MiraKuru Centers.

I blame Abike Dabiri for going to defend them abroad. They still abuse her despite her efforts.

If na me, would beg the foreign governments to train them well and insist President Tinubu doubling the sentence when they are deported.

That's the only cure for their criminality gene.

CHINWOEKE KANU, this name sounds familiar, although we're not surprise. Once you mention India and crime perpetrators from Nigeria, they usually come from one region just south of the niger Delta bridge.

It's the usual suspects. May God rescue Nigeria from this scourge of "making it by all means possible or die trying".

Do not be fooled. Most crime news involving Igbos are arrests while most involving Yoruba are convictions. They are quite different.

And these elements would talk and gaslight everyone as if they are clean. Always them, haha! From one crime to another and when you talk they said you are envious. That's the most ridiculous statement I have heard multiple times.
Very very shameless

Yorubas are being convicted everyday in the UK for fraud and rape. Some are even serial murders and rapists. These are another level of crime. Ninety percent of crimes that involves Igbos posted on nairaland are mere arrests many of whom were not even charged talk more of convictions. We are not fooled.
