South Africa Overtakes Nigeria as Africa’s Largest Fuel Importer. South Africa is currently Africa’s largest importer of petrol, a position it gained in mid-2025 after the Dangote Refinery significantly reduced Nigeria’s need for imported fuel. In the first quarter of 2025, South Africa imported 4.2 million metric tonnes of fuel, compared to Nigeria’s 3.1 million metric tonnes, according to energy consultancy CITAC.

God help Dangote who built a national refinery even as those who imposed themselves forcefully on nigerians are busy building refineries in Malta to milk Nigeria dry.

Framing it as overtake when it’s not that SA increased its import is not the true context. The true context is that Nigeria simply reduced its import.
