If You Were Nigeria’s President For One Week, What Would You Change First? by CommentatorPro(op): 11:53am On Oct 05, 2025
Nigeria is a country blessed with talent, resources, and resilience — yet it continues to struggle under the weight of bad leadership, corruption, and poor governance. From unreliable electricity to the rising cost of living, it sometimes feels like every sector is crying out for help.

Now imagine this: you suddenly become the President of Nigeria — but only for one week. You have full control to make key decisions, sign executive orders, and implement reforms. No bureaucracy, no political godfathers — just seven days to make a difference.

What would you fix first?

Would you focus on the economy, to bring down the price of food and fuel?
Would you tackle security, ensuring that citizens can travel freely without fear of bandits or kidnappers?
Or maybe you’d go straight to education, reviving schools, paying teachers well, and making universities work again?

Some Nigerians say they would start by cutting government salaries and reducing the cost of governance. Others believe the first step should be arresting corrupt politicians and recovering looted funds. A few even argue that constitutional reform is the only real solution to Nigeria’s endless cycle of problems.

Whatever your opinion, one thing is clear — most Nigerians know exactly what they want fixed; they just haven’t had the power to do it.

So, let’s hear from you
If you had just one week as Nigeria’s President, with total authority to act, what’s the first thing you’d change and why?

The first thing I will do is making education free and compulsory for every Nigerians. Both old and young must get access to quality education.

Quality education is the bedrock of every nation that dreams of greatness.

Just focus on Vocational education study and improve the electricity

In this century, all these University, colleges, polytechnic are pure waste of time because after you finished there is no job.

With vocational education, as you are studying, you are already making money without being a liability to anyone.

The celebrities, you have no idea how much they are paying their make up artist, personal assistant, managers which are jobs you don't learn in tertiary, they are vocational study learning. If there are more people into it, it will create more job opportunities

Free and quality education is the only thing our country needs at the moment.

We need to start exporting brilliant minds just like the India and Chinese are doing. We need to occupy more important positions across the globe.

Quality education will create employment. Idleness and hopelessness is the reason for the insecurity we are facing in Nigeria. Years ago, you will travel from Lagos to Maiduguri with your two eyes closed. You will travel anywhere within Nigeria freely.

Fix education and say bye bye to Banditry, Kidnapping, Ritual killings , Fulani herdsmen crisis and many more.

Let me break it down for you so that you will be able to comprehend.

The person who said free education above is partially right. How many jobless graduates do we have in Nigeria? Only basic education make sense in today's world. Check the billionaires in the world and find out their education qualifications

With vocational education, you will be making money while studying. Majority of those who are into criminal activities is because there are no job opportunities which there are reasonable graduates involved

I’ll reduce the running cost of the executive arm of government that I’m in charge of.

That move alone will free up a lot of funds to do other things.

I will invite the US to annex Nigeria as part of its territory, just as Puerto Rico is US Territory

That will automatically makes all Nigerian Citizens US Citizens..

The US will sort out the rest

One bullet to kill a billion birds grin

Our useless politicians will rest, and the citizens will also rest...Let the US have all the nation's natural resources that the politicians have cornered to themselves since independence, while we all become US Citizens.....A very fair trade if you ask me, in contrast to our politicians cornering everything even for their unborn generations undecided

The services which have been monopolized, there will be more people involving in such service

Hard pass.
Nigerians don't deserve good governance.
Nigerians still pee by the roadside and litter everywhere.
Re: If You Were Nigeria’s President For One Week, What Would You Change First? by epainos:
One week. I mean just only one week, and I have to do something. Hmmmm...

Here are Nigerian diseases:
1. Corruption
2. Over population loading
3. Religious intolerance
4. Tribal intolerance
5. And other issues.

The top on the list is corruption; hence, that is what I would do, but one week is too short. So, I would think of something that I could do which could have a positive impact on reducing corruption.

Ok. I know what I would do. I would pass the law to take INEC chairman nomination from the president and make the electoral system seamless and transparent such that politicians cannot rig elections again. Period.

You guys can start figuring out what this would do to Nigeria.

Cheers! wink

1. Balkanise the country on day one. Everyone who wants to go will be helped to leave immediately.

2. From there, the remaining partners will be organised into true federal entities in every way and tasked with self-governance while the centre will be tasked with the critical functions of overarching economic policy, external security, oversight of internal security in a state-policing model, elections, and critical infrastructure like ports and interstate highways.

3. As one brilliant fellow said up there, legalize marijuana!

Price of goods and services is not that expensive in Nigeria, the issue is that majority of us are very poor.
A two bedroom flat apartment still goes around 350k annually in some part of Lagos State yet many of us will still go to mountain for prayer to be able to afford that.

In some countries they pay me monthly and they still pay with ease.

A good education will create wealth.
