Nigerian Fuel by aloyemeka1(op): 1:32am On Oct 26, 2011
Is the petrol we use in Nigeria unleaded?. I am asking because leaded petrol poisons the catalytic converter and if our fuel is leaded, how come the US made cars that are everywhere in Nigeria do not have their check engine light on.

On the other hand, leaded fuel is cheaper and I suspect Nigeria may be tempted to import it into the country[assuming we've been using unleaded] now that the petrol subsidy is out.
Re: Nigerian Fuel by sultaan(m): 2:56am On Oct 26, 2011
That is one of the questions that never answered because only god knows what is being imported/sold just suppose to pay(remember those killer fuel by Abacha).Leaded/unleaded octane rating?

Then cost of clearing cars and how its calculated?

Those questions won't be answered as long as Nigeria is Nigeria

I posted a thread on this a few weeks ago, no responses, simply because most people dont even know there's a difference and what it means.
Some vehicle brands are more sensitive than others in detecting such things but I can assure you that 80% of U.S manufactured nissans in Nigeria have had cat converter/o2 sensor codes as a result of the poor quality of fuel we are sold (at tremendous profit to the importers).

So, here is what you get as a Nigerian

No standardization as to quality of fuel imported
Faster burning fuel due to the high ethanol content
Damage to catalysts and o2 sensors
Poor performance of your car
Higher car maintenance expenses

Another downside to having a U.S manufactured car in Nigeria

Nigeria is using unleaded Regular 87 currently. In 2005, leaded fuel was phased out and for those who can remember, we used to have funnels in our cars to use whenever we want to buy fuel. That was when we were using leaded fuel. Now the effect of unleaded regular on vehicles that requires Premium unleaded is the reason why cars dont last in Nigeria. Low octane fuel on cars that requires premium fuel is a grave danger that we face here. The PPPRA is not willing to change that policy even though they know that it is damaging the vehicles of majority of Nigerians. Dangote's refinery is the only light in the tunnel as he promised to produce high grade fuels.
Cars that are at risk with our fuel are:
Acura, Nissan, VW, BMW, ( The M series requires a higher number than 91) Range Rovers, Mercedes Benz, Lexus, Volvo, Mitsubishi and a lot more.

Are you sure about the 87 octane rating figure? Total says different
Re: Nigerian Fuel by king406(m): 4:13pm On Feb 07, 2018
Octane level in Nigeria is not even up to 80. A friend working at nnpc told me. Newer cars especially those that have a turbocharger are at a huge risk. New Mercedes 4 cylinder turbocharged engines have been on the rise for engine failure especially late last year when fuel became scarce, people used black market fuel on those cars not knowing the damage they are doing to their cars.

No one cares. The official policy is that the fuel should be minimum rating of 90 which the SON attest to after the research conducted among various stakeholders in the industry. When Nigeria phased out leaded fuel, we were happy for our cars. The leaded fuel has almost wiped out the Vw boras from our roads. The policy makers who were still using Peugeot as official cars allowed unleaded regular fuel as the one suitable for the country. It was also at this point that Coscharis and Honda place will not touch your car if you don't register with them. Honda used to say that they don't have the software for US specs but God pass them. Right now because of the gurus that decided to thread into murky waters of no go area, these dealerships have abandoned the 1m registration policy or no software for US specs. A big shout out to the guys on Nairaland that had improved the repairs industry to the extent that Nigerians bring in cars that even we don't even know the names all because of these gurus.

All of Obajana virtually belongs to Dangote.

I shot a little clip while I traveled past obajana, from the factory to the trucks, everything belonged to him, Dangote.....

Wealthiest Black man alive.

I thought the minimum was supposed to be RON 91, Nigeria should only deal in the higher premiums na how we with our oil go d use lower quality na who do us this tin na

Because of this issue, the only Volkswagen cars on the road are golf 1 to 4. The whole passat generation couldn't cope with the quality of fuel in Nigeria.

I drive a benz glk 2015 but recently I cleared one 2012 Rav 4 from the port and mhen it was just peppy and responsive I got to do a comparison and noticed that it's the fuel that came with the car from abroad. Nigerian fuel is the lowest grade possible and it probably illegal abroad I wonder what fuel they are exporting to other countries because this our fuel is just to move the car it's not truely a driving experience

Audio export. I have been happy for truck owners about the diesel fuel currently in the country that they will drive in peace. He said that his rotor just failed and he is trying to fix it. Dangote Diesel can not power a Mack truck. All Mack trucks are completely off our roads because of the diesel. Lanre shittu used to be the sole representative for Mack Truck but they have diversified to Chinese trucks and it's the same truck that we were told to convert the engine to mitsubishi canter engine. We need to be up and ask questions. The Benz GLK is now very sluggish in movement and the fuel is killing the car. Dangote fuel can never enter the US.

The way you confidently spew rubbish amazes me.

Have you taken a sample of dangote product to a reputable lab to analyse it?

If Dangote comes for you, can you survive?

Truck rotors fail even in the mighty USA with the best diesel.

They are electromechanical devices. They fail. They are not perfect. And some of the h its here in nigeria has seen hundreds of thousands of miles.

Fleet owners are actually happier now than before. Diesel quality has actually improved tremendously.

Mack trucks are still everywhere in the country. Fleet owners have bought newer trucks. Do you know how old some of those Mack trucks were?

Sino, howo, and other Asian brands offered credit facilities and payment plans to many Fleet owners who ditched their older less efficient Mack trucks for the newer Asian models. That's what happened.

Dangote has been exporting and will continue to export. The refinery was actually built to export as well as serve domestic needs. It wasn't build it to meet "nigerian" quality.

If Dangote comes for me, he will explain better the reason why his diesel is not making us happy. The brand new Mack trucks used for the Bar beach project are dead. Mack suffered to the point that Mechanics were advising people to buy the older version without the rotors. Go to Olodi Apapa and ask for the brand. This was not Dangote Diesel fault but there should be visible improvement in all diesel trucks. DHL supply chain went bankrupt because the diesel then available destroyed the fleet of brand new trucks in the company. Their Mechanic was an American with latest diagnostic tools but the trucks failed. For fuel specs, we don't need to test it, just go to the port and buy fuel in a car coming out of the port and check engine light will come on. And his company claimed that they were producing euro 5 fuel. Do the arithmetics

1. New macks failed not cos of diesel quality but cos of dpf and quality of engine oil used. They require low ash (SAPS) oil. Owners and mechanics here just didn't know how to maintain them. Google low SAPS oil. Same owners were throwing Total Rubia S into their trucks.
2. Same truck owner mechanics will advice car owners to discard efi and use carburetor. Do the maths.
3. Do you even own a fleet or a single truck or are you basing this on them say, them say?
4. Where did the "new mack" owners buy their diesel? Who were their suppliers? Do you know where their suppliers get their diesel? Cos you see this diesel supply business eh, e go shock you. Nothing is as it seems. Leave that side. Na another school entirely.
5. Dangote trucks do not run on imported diesel. Julius berger trucks do not run on imported diesel. Don't just accept whatever you are fed. Run your own investigations. Throwing DHL name around will not lay credence to your fallacy.
6. Again and for the last time, go and conduct your investigation thoroughly, arm yourself with verifiable facts and stop throwing around baseless claims.

This will be my last response on this fuel matter.

The new Mack trucks were sold by the sole importer of the trucks and they were the ones that maintained the trucks. So it's not a random mechanic thing. Low saps engine oil is C1 or C2 which the 2014 Range Rover Sports TD recommended for its use and which PAN also recommended for the 508. An air-conditioned Mack truck will not be left in the hands of unskilled mechanics. Mobil esp is C2 and can be used for both diesel and fuel engines. You talk about research all the time, you dey forbid to do your own research? When you were doing research on the additives to use on your Acura Mdx, did you not call to ask for my formula? Do your own research and tell us about the result.
