Jean-Philippe Mateta: Proof That It’s Never Too Late To Rise by AnonPoet(op): 1:29pm On Oct 08, 2025
In football, we love fairy tales, the 17-year-old prodigy breaking records, the teenage sensation scoring on his debut, or the young star earning a dream move to a top club before he’s old enough to rent a car. But every now and then, a story comes along that reminds us that greatness doesn’t always arrive early. Sometimes, it comes to those who wait, grind, and grow in the shadows.

That’s exactly what Jean-Philippe Mateta’s journey represents, the story of a player who refused to let time define his destiny.

Mateta’s rise is a reminder that success in life, and in football, is rarely linear. Some players peak early, others blossom late. What matters is consistency, focus, and the belief that your moment will come if you keep putting in the work.

Humble Beginnings: From the French Third Division
At 20, while some of his peers were already lighting up the big leagues, Mateta was playing in France’s third division with LB Châteauroux. It was far from glamorous, long bus rides, modest crowds, and a footballing world that didn’t always notice the quiet achievers.

But Mateta wasn’t discouraged. The powerful striker kept improving, showing flashes of promise that earned him a move to Le Havre in Ligue 2. There, he began to refine his game, his movement, composure, and power in front of goal. Each season was a step forward, not backward.

The Bundesliga Leap
By 21, Mateta’s patience paid off. German Bundesliga side Mainz 05 came calling in 2018, handing him a platform to prove himself among Europe’s elite. It was a huge leap for a player who, just a few years earlier, was toiling in the lower tiers of French football.

At Mainz, he grew tougher, learning to battle seasoned defenders, sharpen his finishing, and adjust to the tactical demands of German football. His breakout performances didn’t go unnoticed, and soon, the English Premier League beckoned.

The Premier League Dream
At 23, Mateta made the switch to Crystal Palace, first on loan and then permanently. It wasn’t a fairy tale debut, he had to fight for minutes, adapt to a new pace, and prove he belonged among some of the world’s best forwards.

But Mateta’s career was never about instant success. It was about consistency, work ethic, and resilience. Season after season, he quietly improved, earning the respect of teammates, coaches, and fans.
By 2024–25, his form spoke louder than ever. His goals became crucial for Palace, and his name, once overlooked, started making headlines.

The Reward at 28
Then came the crowning moment. In October 2025, at the age of 28, Jean-Philippe Mateta received his first-ever call-up to the French national team.

It was a moment of triumph not just for him, but for every player who has ever been told “it’s too late.” In a country overflowing with attacking talent Mateta’s inclusion sent a powerful message: persistence pays off.
His story reminds us that football isn’t always about who arrives first. Sometimes, it’s about who refuses to stop showing up.

Ilobet celebrates stories like this because in football, just like in life, it’s all about timing, belief, and smart choices.

Mateta solid striker unlike Jackson. Strong, physical and has shot power.

Patience truly is a virtue.

I really disliked him in his early days at Crystal Palace. I'm always like, how's this guy a professional with this type of performances. But dude really turned it around and now consistently drops very good performances, match after match.

Re: Jean-Philippe Mateta: Proof That It’s Never Too Late To Rise by ARISHEM:
His story is similar to that of Jamie vardy.
Jamie vardy career story was even more superb and remarkable.

He started within 19 to 24 years of age from Stocksbridge park steels and to Halifax town in the Northern Premier League Division One North (the eighth tier of English football), helped fleetwood town with his goals after Halifax town were promoted to the conference league and up from there went to Leicester city helping them get promotion from league 1 to premier league and thereafter won the English Premier League and the FA Cup after breaking all kinds of goal scoring records including winning different EPL awards and the golden boot in 2019 season.
He didn't make his top flight debut until the age of 27.

He never left Leicester after that. Maybe fear that his incredible goal scoring super powers will leave him because he made no impact to the English national team after he was called up at the age of 28.
It’s really never too late to rise.

I calmed my nerves to read the story to see if their is any thing else I would see.

Is it not the Mateta that I watch? He has no skill, I can't sign him to a big Club if I am the Couch.

Truthfully, take a closer look at that man, is he twenty-eight years?

I was thinking about Mateta's rise to glory before opening nairaland. This is pure coincidence. Wow!

I was thinking about him deserving the call up to the France national team. Mateta the baldheaded player with agility. Continue to shine shine shine

How is Mateta still useless? He's a good striker, strong in the air for headers and shoot more accurately than most premier league forwards.
Though that his age is purely a lie but I still do not actually know what you meant by him being useless because the guy performs averagely well
Re: Jean-Philippe Mateta: Proof That It’s Never Too Late To Rise by MrTuthakhamun(m): 6:59am On Oct 09, 2025
A striker scores goals, Mateta isn’t known for goals, mateta averages a goal every three matches or even more, that’s a useless striker that’s never going to play for a top team

Of course many have their respective times!

Some early some late!

Some die early!

Some get old!

And there are many in between...

Most teams are subscribing to experienced players.

They're tired of awful performances by these overpriced, overhyped, inexperienced TikTok kids who have zero zeal to win games.

They just wanna appear, play and get paid.

Same with me bro, he was just too heavy as a striker for my liking and also slow. But kudos to him for ever improving his skills and becoming what he's now

Like Mateta unlike Lacassete. Lacassete wasn't lucky on his own. Played everything he did for Lyon and Arsenal yet still didn't get a France national team call up. They used the Olympics to compensate him the same Mateta

We've seen this play out with Michu (Swansea) and that former Leicester City striker (can't remember his name).
One thing with football and most things in life is, when it's your time to shine, nothing can stop you. Not even age.

'Never left Leicester' is his greatest mistake and I'm sure he's regretting that by now while playing for U.S. Cremonese in Seria A.

Person wey better club dey rush back then, and he was forming loyalty. Same loyalty landed in Cremonese undecided
