FYI, the S-400 is designed to also track and defend against stealth flying objects.

Stealth is only an edge in terms of modern deployment and over less sophisticated foes.

I share your sentiments. And so do multiple other people from what I have read so far. But we should be careful not to populate our house with rats because we want to eradicate cockroaches. Rats eat cockroaches, agreed. But rats and cockroaches are both pests and are unwanted.

Let me take you down memory lane with regards to the history of PMCs in Nigeria:

Around 2013/14, Boko Haram was beating the Nigerian army back to back, seizing territory and committing all sorts of atrocities on captured civilians, including slaughtering their throats.

Sometime in 2014, Erik Prince came to Nigeria and asked Goodluck Jonathan for some money to fight Boko. Reports say he asked for $1.5 billion (like 225 billion naira at the time or 2.2 trillion naira today). Jonathan refused.

Meanwhile, the US refused to sell weapons to us over “war crimes” and Boko continued to capture territory. Jonathan later secretly contracted another PMC, STTEP, run by Eeben Barlow from South Africa to fight Boko.

Eeben & STTEP took command of the 72nd Airborne battalion in Makurdi, Benue state, and repurposed them into the 72nd Mobile Strike Force. He purchased Reva MRAPs from South Africa and Beryl rifles (based on the AK) from Poland. He also got some Russian/Soviet T-72 tanks from the Nigerian army stock, plus a few helicopters, likely from their own stock. He then got to work.

Eeben structured the 72nd mobile strike force as a light infantry special forces group. They performed long range strike/interdiction operations where they travel hundreds of kilometers into Boko-held territory, meet Boko right inside their bases and defeat them there. They then move to the next battlefield.

They did not hold ground and instead, handed everywhere they cleared to another military unit. They will then leave the battlefield, drive hundreds of kilometers to the next one where they will defeat Boko and then leave for another battlefield again.

Using this tactic, they captured hundreds of kilometers from Boko and were responsible for many of the pushbacks and back to back defeats Boko suffered in the hands of the Nigerian army in the run up to the 2015 elections.

STTEP liberated multiple towns including Gwoza, Bama, Damasak, and the infamous Baga town, which were all Boko strongpoints and served as Boko haram capitals at one point. And STTEP did all these in less than six months, starting late 2014 to around March/April 2015.

Their performance is very impressive considering they had just two months or so to get the 72 mobile strike force ready and bring in weapons. The actual combat itself was four months long. At one point, the South African company that produced the Reva MRAP was even working at full capacity to meet the super-tight delivery deadline.

Most times, many of the operations the 72 mobile strike force went on also doubled as training missions. So, they were literally practising on the battlefield using Boko Haram as live targets.

And how did the US respond to this? They increased pressure on GEJ, Eeben Barlow, and STTEP. Things got so bad Nigeria couldn't even pay for weapons.

If you remember that incident where a jet belonging to the head of the Christian Association of Nigeria at the time, was held in South Africa after it flew in with millions of dollars in cash; It was because we had to pay cash for weapons because we did not want the US to know.

Before long, the media heard about that incident and later, the use of PMCs in Nigeria and it became a full-blown scandal. It was soon politicized with PDP and APC exchanging words over the use of PMCs. And you know once things get to that point, it is over.

Once GEJ lost the elections, STTEP and Barlow started to wind down their operations and Buhari promptly ended their contract once he came into power in May 2015.

That is STTEP’s record right here in Nigeria. Now, compare that with Erik Prince whose PMC called Blackwater has been enmeshed in scandal after scandal in Iraq, Afghanistan, and everywhere else that he has been to. He is either killing people or shooting crowds and leaving them with serious injuries. In Iraq alone, he has like three massacres to his name among many other war crimes.

Things got so bad that he started changing the name of his PMC back to back just to avoid the negative press. He has gone from Blackwater USA to Blackwater Worldwide to Xe Services LLC to Academi, and now, Constellis Holdings.

Meanwhile, STTEP performed brilliantly in Nigeria and everywhere else he has been to. Eeben Barlow himself has ended wars in Angola and Sierra Leone under an earlier PMC (Executive Outcomes) he founded in the 80s/90s, and he can do the same here too.

But we cannot say the same about Erik who has never ended a war anywhere. His presence even makes the war worse as we are currently seeing in Congo where his mines and PMCs are very active. Only God knows the war crimes he is committing there.

The guy is only interested in his mines. Once he secures his mine, and starts to steal resources, anything else that happens outside of that is none of his business.

But besides his role as a private military and mining company owner, which is clearly a conflict of interest, he is coming in under very controversial circumstances, which no right thinking Nigerian should tolerate.

The fact that he is even justifying his presence with the pretext of a “Christian genocide” and calling on the Pope (and not the Nigerian government) to fund his army indicates he is trying to polarize us and exploit our religious differences to steal our natural resources. He knows the Pope won't fund him, but he deliberately asked the Pope to just to pass a message and validate his Christian genocide claims.

In all, a PMC is a good solution but not one owned by or affiliated to Erik Prince. If we need anyone, it is Eeben Barlow. He has a track record, does not own mines, does not create religious grounds to justify his actions, and does not interfere in our internal politics. He will do what he is told to do, collect his payment, and vamoose once he is done.

As for Erik, he is one rat we can do without.

without the backing of Iran these groups won't be able to carry out their activities against Israel.
