The Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of Nigeria’s 36 states and its Federal Capital Territory (FCT) jumped 49.7% year-on-year from N2.43 trillion in 2023 to N3.63 trillion in 2024.

From the recently released National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) 2024 IGR report, these 3 states recorded the highest IGR figures:

Lagos: N1.26 trillion
Rivers: N317.30 billion
FCT: N282.36 billion

On the opposite end of the spectrum were these 3 states with the lowest IGR:

Yobe: N11.08 billion
Ebonyi: N13.18 billion
Kebbi: N16.97 billion.

Also, out of the year 2024 total 3.63 trillion IGR collected, 73.35% came from taxes.

3.63 Trillion might sould like a lot of money, but the harsh truth is, Nigeria is not rich enough even then.

Nigeria needs budgets that pass 100 trillion naira or more before we can have a budget that makes sense. Also, our tax to gdp ratio is still low.

APC people should stop the self praise. Tax uptake is still very low.

That is a decrease when you consider how much the naira has been devalued. The dollar value of total IGR has decreased

I can't accept this.

Lagos IGR alone is higher than the IGR of about 3 geopolitical zones combined together yet no commiserate development to show for such a huge IGR

With this huge resources available, any i.diot can be a Governor in Lagos and people will think the person is working..........

What this means is that Lagos one year IGR alone is higher than Anambra state 4 years budget yet Anambra is measuring up with lagos to a good extent



When corruption in Lagos state will be unvelied, it will be a bomb shell, and this will be done when a new president comes onboard and impose STATE OF EMERGENCY IN LAGOS, the Military Administrator appointed then will do the needful.....

Mark this date because Tinubu has set a bad precedent

Has devaluation not killed the increase in the IGR,

Most states are running on low budgets...that's a main reason why they cannot provide much in the way of anemites and good services

As an example.Lagos state earned an IGR OF 670million dollars, US. Lagos state has Nigeria;s largest city, which is similar in size to New York, which spent 10 billion dollars on the city police in the same period (2024).

Even if we did as you said...and you are very right, mind you, I wish more people had your attitude....it won;t change much. Also, nationwide, most Nigerians do not pay tax to the state and federal government because most nigerians work in the informal sector. Also, our economy is not diversified...most government revenue comes from 1.8m bpd of oil, which is enough for a country with 5 million people, not 230 million people. Hence...loans.

That is why APC Has failed...it is not making more money for the country. And it is not even planning to diversify the economy. Loans, it takes loans, but it is as a result of the failures above. But if it took hard decisions...like Millei is doing in Argentina, it would lose elections, again like Millei's party is losing local elections in Argentina....so, bad decisions to win elections.

I can't accept this.

Touts do not work for the state or federal government...most of them are NURTW members or LGA people...and the revenue they collect goes to the NURTW or the LGA...mostly to the NURTW.

Most Nigerians do not pay income tax, including the touts and the bus drivers...to the state and federal governments. Most of the levies collected by the touts does not go to the state and federal government. And the money raised is probably on a good day not up to 10 million naira monthly. Maybe less.

Throw in the fact that Nigeria does not run a diversified economy, and that APC , despite all its promises, runs an economy dependent on oil revenue that is not enough, forcing it to take even more loans, and that tax to gdp is still low...and you get the picture.

3.6 trillion naira is just 2 billion dollars...for the whole country. 230 million nigerians. Assuming we purged ourselves of corruption, it is not enough at all.

Vote a government that would diversify our economy, widen the tax net, get us off oil, fight corruption and end our dependence on oil revenue...and industrialze, we would get somewhere. After some years. Not this tinubu government, or the oppostion.

Not true. Our leaders at all levels are corrupt and that is common knowledge. Holding politicians accountable is a waste of time. Nothing comes out of it. They have all mastered and r United in their grand conspiracy to pillage this country dry.

it important to know are these IGR as a result of an increase in productivity/investment or just Double taxation at work

If the IGR is rising as a result of surge in productivity nd investment by now we will be seeing some transformation nd impact as well, rebasing the economy on Tax is like surviving on garri and rice ..your stomach go dey full But you wont look health or fresh
