When Will We Truly Learn Tolerance?

Yesterday, a disturbing video went viral showing a female student in Ilorin (a Federal Government school, for that matter) being barred from entering her school simply because she wore a hijab.

Honestly, one cannot help but ask: When will we learn to tolerate one another in this country?

Has the Nigerian Constitution suddenly changed to deny people the freedom to profess and practice their faith openly? What happened to the Supreme Court judgment that explicitly affirmed the right of Muslim girls to wear hijab in schools if they so wish?

Even more ironic this happened in Ilorin, a city with a rich Islamic heritage and majority Muslim population. If such acts of intolerance can happen there, what should we expect elsewhere?

But then again, what exactly is the problem?
If my daughter wears a hijab, or my wife chooses to wear a niqab, have I forced it upon anyone’s daughter? Why then should it become a national issue?

The truth is, until we begin to genuinely respect each other’s faith and freedom, peace and unity will remain elusive in this country. Nigeria’s Constitution guarantees freedom of religion and that freedom must mean the right to live our beliefs, not just declare them.

Even in some Western countries, with a much smaller Muslim population, women are allowed to wear hijab or niqab freely in schools and public spaces. So, what exactly is our excuse here in Nigeria, a country that proudly claims to uphold religious liberty?

Let’s be honest, this isn’t about dress code. It’s about tolerance, respect, and justice.
And until we uphold these, we’ll keep failing as a truly united people.

PS: Don't forget to recite Suratul Khaf
With all this energy you wrote with trying to prove unnecessary point. Why can't you admonish her parents to take her to a Muslim school? Isn't that a peaceful way?

This hijab unna dey wear so e no dey tire unna, tufiakwa saw a muslim lady one time with a child on her back and she was putting on hijab and the hijab also covered the child, in my mind I said how is this child breathing, people where advising her to raise the hijab up so that the poor child could breathe, she did not accept saying it's there religion.

Because of religion you cover pikin with unna long garment, na waoo for unna....

I think the learning of tolerance should start from you when you know you don’t have to shove your religious beliefs on others…

The school have rules and have uniform, why don’t you learn tolerance first and obey and respect the rules set by the school…
You don’t have to come in to emotionally manipulate others to accept your own conditions

The people talking about tolerance burn Deborah alive a few years ago.

I mean you killed someone for less than hijab and then you turn around to talk about tolerance?

No Muslim should ever talk about tolerance unless advising other Muslims

Take it to school management, if not satisfy, take it to police station or write a petition to Kwara State ministry of education or at the federal level.

No institution above the law of FRN.

Op, if the school in question has a school uniform, every student MUST dress accordingly. Imagine babalawo children dress in traditional attire with gorges and calabash, Christian children dress in celestial robes, there would be chaos.
Tolerance is when we respect constituted authority. How many Nigerian soldiers wear hijab, are there no Muslims among them? What about the NPF? There are Islamic schools, where hijab, niqua and others are allowed, please take your children there.

In the Western world you referenced, most public schools have no uniform. You ignorantly or purposely left out these facts to draw sensational sentiments.

Why are Muslims always playing victim card and dishing out what they can’t take?
Re: Hijab In School: When Will We Truly Learn Tolerance? by TOPMAN4LIFE: 11:46am On Oct 10, 2025
What tolerance are you preaching?
Muslims don't have what it takes to preach tolerance.
Many Muslim /Arab countries close their borders against other religions but take their religion to other countries where their religion was not known before.

Christians will establish schools and Muslims will want to take their children there to foment trouble

Islam doesn't tolerate other religions, but Muslims want other religions to tolerate them. Muslims give others what they can't take and want to take from others what they can't give.

Islam is the most intolerant religion on Earth. Yet, they are the first to cry about intolerance

many of you are ignorant of same religion you are following fanatically, go to core north today, you will see different women from other religions, all are in hijab, Christan women wearing hijab to church, ( in other words hijab not specifically for Islam women),.... nevertheless, if an organisation has a rule, that prohibits certain outfits , let us learn how to leave in peace, and respect such organisation's rules.

See your wide mouth like tolerance, you force others to take what you yourself can't accept. Can a female Christian student enter a Muslim dominated school without wearing hijab? What is the essence of putting on uniforms in the first place if a Muslim can use hijab, a native doctors son dresses in a shrine attire, a Christian girl student put on scarf? Even for a Christian to comment on a Muslim thread here on nairaland he is made to swear, and here you are talking about tolerance.
don't mind these guys. Na dem burn Deborah a few years ago o.

Coming here to talk nonsense about tolerance.

hijab is a concept of modesty and humility associated with women, it is for a Muslim women to cover their hair and neck. It is a voluntary act of worship, an outward symbol of inner faith, modesty and devotion to God.
it is the Quran's instructions for modest behavior and dressing, the hijab embodies the Islamic ideal of modesty (Awrah) Wearing the hijab is an outward manifestation of an inner commitment to worship (ALLAAH) and a reminder to embody the dignity it represents.
you can't give what you don't have, this is a school that belongs to the Government how possible some disgruntled element enforcing an act which is against what the law interpret.

The decision to wear a hijab is a personal one, rooted in religious principles and individual interpretation, who are you to tell us how to practice our religion? if your religion permit you to used the restroom and use tissue paper to clean yourself , what's my business telling you the proper way to clean yourself after visiting the toilet? you can have S*x with your partner and go to the church, your religion didn't say anything disregarding the action but my Religion guides my way in every of my steps and actions.
who the Fu*K are you to tell us on how and where to use hijab

Why do you like inciting religious mantra?
You no see anything to talk about killings, banditry or is it terrorism in that state but it's hijab that you carried on ya head!
Repent, Jesus is coming soon.
If your story is investigated deeply now, there may be more to it than this one sided story you just narrated.
There are institutions where Islamic tenets are being done and other religion practitioners that go there aren't crying. If you can't conform with a place, you leave. No need to dey do cry baby.

Before you reply to a comment you should at least try and understand the point the person is making. The OP specifically said that this is not about dress code .... it is about tolerance. Comments like yours tell us something about the writer .... he's either intolerant or has very poor comprehension skills.

@ topic. No doubt...this is about tolerance and definitely has absolutely nothing to do with dress code. It is foolish to even suggest dress code is involved because if asked what is the dress code of the school the answer be either silence or a mouthful of ignorance. It is a public institution and by law one is allowed to wear a hijab . If we should have a problem with someone it should be the person who blocked her. Too many of us are still locked in our 1700s we vs. them village mentality. Intolerant people everywhere.

Your write up is full of double standards.
You talk of religious tolerance meanwhile it is the Muslims whom are not tolerant.
You talk of freedom of religion . Meanwhile it is the Muslims that beat maim and even Kpai people that convert from Islam to other religion.

My question is this: "Is Hijab part of the uniform?" Why is the student wearing it today when, four or five years ago, there was a Hijab case at C&S College and Baptist School? Why didn't the parent wear the hijab for the girl back then, or the girl wear it at that time? While I will preach and practice tolerance, I will not support defiance or people challenging authority in the name of religion.

A school as an institution has their uniform...the way you people take these foreign religions so seriously, yet I don't see the benefit, almajiris and religious extremism and terrorism are some cons of religion, yet you people want to push it down the throat of every spheres of our lives... Nigeria is a secular nation, if you want to live in a religious fundamentalist nation, go to Saudi Arabia, Qatar etc.

If you're claiming hijab isn't allowed in an Islamic school, that's different. But your type has cried that hijab isn't allowed in a non Islamic school. What do you expect?
Do you allow others to dress based on their faith or culture in ya religious institutions?
Does the world revolve around only una alone?
So you can see you're the problem.

The funny thing is that they're the most intolerant people in the world.

Will they die if they don't wear hijab for few hours? The word "Uniform" means everybody must dress the same way. At times when I see some athletes putting on hijab I just shake my head, they're so annoying.

If they don't wanna comply they should take their children to Muslim schools. Me for instance, I won't enrol my child in a Muslim school because I won't be comfortable with their practice......
