When A Domain Dies: The Expensive Lesson Behind Nkiri, com’s Domain Loss by CloudMita(op): 4:22am On Oct 10, 2025
Recently, one of Nigeria’s most popular movie download websites — Nkiri, com — went offline after its domain expired. The story took a shocking turn when the domain was quickly picked up by another buyer.

Rumors circulating in the tech space suggest that the original Nkiri team has allegedly offered over ₦16 million to recover the domain name — yet the new owner reportedly refused to sell.
That’s how powerful a domain name can be.

How Much Did Nkiri Lose?

Before the expiration, Nkiri, com reportedly attracted over 4 million page views daily from users searching for Nollywood, Hollywood, and Korean movies.

Now, let’s do a simple calculation:

4,000,000 daily views × $0.5 CPM = $2,000/day

That’s over $60,000 (₦90 million) every month — purely from ads.

Losing that kind of traffic overnight means not just loss of income but the collapse of a digital identity built over years of effort, backlinks, SEO, and user trust.
The Harsh Truth About Domain Negligence

A domain name is not just a web address — it’s your digital real estate.
When you fail to renew it on time, it’s like leaving your house unlocked in the middle of the night. Someone else can simply walk in and take over everything you’ve built.

Once it’s gone:

Your visitors land on someone else’s content.

Your SEO authority transfers to another site.

Your brand’s online credibility vanishes.

You lose revenue instantly — sometimes forever.

A Wake-Up Call for Business Owners

If your business, blog, or brand depends on a website, always monitor your domain renewal date.
Enable auto-renewal and ensure your payment details are up to date.

Also, maintain a good relationship with your webmaster or developer.
Many business owners assume “the web guy will handle it,” only to wake up one day and realize the site is gone. Regular communication can prevent that.

For Nkiri Fans

If you’re a fan who used Nkiri, com for your favorite movies, it’s time to find safe and reliable alternatives.

Some platforms to check out include:

Moviemata. (search Google)

9jarocks (search Google)

These sites continue to provide access to trending Nigerian and international movies.

Nkiri’s story should be a lesson to every website owner — from small business owners to big media platforms.
Your domain name is your digital identity, your traffic hub, and your brand anchor.

Neglecting it can cost you more than money — it can erase your entire online existence.

So, the next time that renewal reminder email lands in your inbox… don’t ignore it.

Nigerian mentality happened to it. For a site which makes that much, renewing their domain name slipped their minds. For a site making so much, see the minuscule sum they offered to get it back. Unserious entities.

It’s not all gloom. They’ll recover their audience. All their patrons need to do is Google the name and the new site will pop up. If you provide amazing service, customers remain with you for life.

You're very correct sir.
When I learnt of the grace mistake
I didn't know how to feel.

Ok, as someone that caught such a big fish and now being offered some NGN 16m

Why hold on to it still?

Then as the original owner, why would it be so hard to throw 100$ on the domain every 6 months to keep pushing it's validity forward?

This is a powerhouse

A very big branded domain

Now someone else will buy the flip and it's all gone.

Some people Sabi catch luck sha

They should have just registered for 10 years it is not even up to $1000 to do that especially for a site that brings in that much revenue.

The Nkiri team are not serious, they let the domain to expire before doing something, typical Nigerians. Imagine playing with the business that is bringing you millions of naira every month.
Re: When A Domain Dies: The Expensive Lesson Behind Nkiri, com’s Domain Loss by Unseen(m): 7:02am On Oct 10, 2025
Where's the source to this your claim?

Because before a Domain expires, the registrar will start sending mails intervally to remind you of the expiration date.

Even when you still did not renew, you will be offered Grace period of about 7 days.

After the expiration of the Grace period, the domain will NOT be automatically available for repurchase by another person.

Do you know how many times 9jarocks have changed domain extension?
These are DMCA targeted website so domain cessation is bound to happen

That is why domain renewal should be taken more serious than Hosting. Just keep your File Update and Re-Host.

They can make a fortune just parking the domain name.

They don't even have to show films again.

Tge previous owners were quite careless.

I have parked domains before.

I bet to disagree…
From this screenshot you can see this domain name is still active.

Makes me remember the time of awafilm, majority of this platform uploads movies that they are not legally authorized to, they don’t have the rights and when such platforms are discovered, they are reported and the site can be brought down…. that’s the sad truth of illegal download/streaming of movies..etc. same thing happens to fbstreams for football back then.

The OP is yarning dust. Nkiri's issue was likely due to its illegal nature, not the epistle you wrote up there. It is common for piracy sites to experience such problems.

You are very correct. The op story na wash。From the day a domain expires it takes at least one month before another user can acquire it. So if na you get website wey dey drop that kind money would you not notice if it is down for even 24 hours?
Besides your attached screenshot says it all。

Don't say what you don't know.
There are only a few domain registrar that allows 1 month grace period.

Nkiri was not on such

It was on Tucows and that registrar knocks you off as soon as you reach the expiry date without renewing

Your domain is pushed to marketplace for anyone that can afford it or open to domain hunters with dropcatch

This is a product of useless Nigerian Government & Banking Policies!

When foolish people run a country, this is what happen!

I lost a domain name, this year, because I could renew the subscription due to the limitations of Nigeria Banking system. When it was finally lifted some months ago after 3 years of embargo, I discovered somebody else has bought it.

Not really.
I use Namecheap
I use GoDaddy and some Nigerian hosting company too.

For the past 3 years now, funding these platforms has been technical

For one part, you'll need to have a very reliable source for PayPal funds

At times when you can't have a PayPal fund, you could use virtual card from grey.co or Geegpay

I used Chippercash too.

So this isn't a very valid excuse unless you're not aware of the current trends
