Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by semid4lyfe(m):
Buhari banned the importation of rice, and the rice farmers who applauded the policy, and boasted they had the capacity to meet local demand jacked up the price.

Then, fuel never cost like now o. Transportation too was cheaper, exchange rate was less the N1000 so fertilizer and other imported farm inputs were more affordable. .

Yet, wetin happen? Price of 50kg bag of rice went north of 100k, making it unaffordable for many Nigerians.

Many times, when some prominent peeps rail against a government policy, check well, na because their pockets dey affected, and not because they care about the common man.

How can you be importing maize? We are producing maize in large volume here.

Real wealth is measured by production not by importation reason why economists measured wealth of a country by GDP.

Agricultural sector is the second highest contributor to our GDP.

Farmers can decide not to farm again if this continues since they are making loses and that is a bad sign. They will be hunger.

Firstly, I think you are mixing the farmer and the agro trader up. The person who sold the rice to you is not the farmer. That person bought from the farmer and brought it to your reach.

Also, I think the bolded is just the economics of demand and supply. Buhari banned importation, without ensuring that the local production can take care of the nation. That caused an imbalance in the demand, and obviously, the price goes up.

Your point is understandable, but it is not on the farmer, in my opinion

What's the essence of digging up my old post? Anyways, it seems the point of my post flew over your head so make I break am down.

Yes, the state I reside produces rice so we don't consume imported rice in the state.
But when PMB banned the importation of rice, and the price of a 50kg bag of rice shot up to over 100k in the country, it had an effect on the price of our local rice too. The prices mirror each other, and follow the same trend only that the local is cheaper. For example, if imported rice is going for 130k, local rice will be 100k.

Also, note that when the price rose to over 100k per 50kg bag, the exchange rate was lower so invariably fertilizers and imported inputs were more affordable than now. Subsidy had not been removed then so fuel and transportation was cheaper too.

This begs the question, why was the local rice more expensive then when the factors of production were cheaper than now when things don cost? Then, I'll go to the rice mill to buy rice, and the sellers will say to me, "Buhari close border, that na why the price go up", and I'll reply "but this rice is produced here na". I later concluded it was the Nigerian factor.

Trust me, whatever the price of maize is right now, if PBAT bans the importation and we rely solely on local production, the price will triple in about a month.

Nobody dey chop GDP. I'll rather the government policy benefit the masses than increase GDP.

Let me tell you why it was cheaper. Buhari didn't banned importation in literal terms.

Is like telling them, you can import but don't come to CBN for forex, source your dollars elsewhere and import and he won't waiver. You see. He discouraged importation of those commodities because if you source your dollars elsewhere and no waiver, your import commodities will be very expensive and people would rather buy the local commodities.

Now, Tinubu gave them waivers reason why the import is cheaper.

Adesina and Sanusi are speaking from selfish interest right?

You are talking about masses, are farmers and people that operate with farmers not part of the masses?

Many farmers are involved in the entire value chain of rice cultivation and processing in the state. Dem plenty for our rice mill.

In addition, I have a colleague who farms rice. When he cultivates his rice, and is ready to sell, he wil pick phone and call his contacts at the mill, and ask, "how much una dey sell CP, mass, 306 etc depending on the specie he cultivated, and the feedback he obtains determines how much he sells it out to the agro-processor.

Parboiled rice is banned in Nigeria, whether through land, air or sea port.

The rice that is allowed through the sea ports are special types of rice like Basmati, or unprocessed paddy rice.

Parboiled rice is banned in Nigeria, sir.

There's everything wrong with the list. See this one again, a senior military officer sold arms and a munitions to militants/terrorists but now he's been pardoned.

This list is an indictment on the person of Lateef Fagbemi the AGF. The Kelvin kidnapper guy kidnapped his fellow SAN ; Mike Ozekhomen and somehow he forwarded a list that included the kidnapper to the president for pardon. Now we are learning he also forwarded a list that had the name of a saboteur military officer who sold arms that was used to kill our military men.

How do they want the families of these criminals' victims to feel?

Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by TemporaryHansel(m):
Prayers and thoughts with the honorable minister of finance, Mr. Wale Edun. Hope he gets better.

But why can't he take treatment in Nigeria? These guys don't even believe in Nigera.
A big indictment on those in government.
