A senior government official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak publicly, described Edun’s condition as somewhat serious but clarified that it is not related to a stroke. The official did not disclose the exact nature of the minister’s illness. Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, is currently recuperating at his Abuja residence following an illness, and there are no plans by President Bola Tinubu to replace him, multiple sources within the Presidency told The PUNCH on Sunday. A senior government official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak publicly, described Edun’s condition as somewhat serious but clarified that it is not related to a stroke. The official did not disclose the exact nature of the minister’s illness. SaharaReporters earlier reported that a top government source confirmed the development on Sunday, describing Edun’s condition as “very serious”. “It’s very serious. He may survive, but he can’t get back to work again,” the source told SaharaReporters. The source further revealed that President Bola Tinubu had begun discreet consultations to identify a possible replacement for Edun following his health challenge. But the government official told The PUNCH that though Edun’s ailment is a “bit serious”, he is not suffering from a stroke. The official, however, failed to reveal the nature of Edun’s sickness. “Yes, he’s indisposed. He’s sick, which is a bit serious, but it’s not a stroke,” the source told The PUNCH, adding that Edun is “in his house”. “He has not been flown anywhere,” the source said. “Of course, he might seek medical attention elsewhere if the doctors say that it is necessary. So, it’s not true that he has stroke. “He doesn’t have stroke. Which is why we put it in the statement that he is indisposed.” Also, according to Rockshock News, sources indicated that Edun has not been flown abroad. Another official confirmed to The PUNCH that Edun is receiving treatment from Nigerian doctors and may seek medical care overseas if the need arises. “They’re still monitoring him. If he needs medical care outside Nigeria, he will go. But he’s still at home,” he said, adding, “There are no plans to replace him.“ Meanwhile, Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, confirmed to The PUNCH that the minister is receiving medical treatment in Nigeria. “Yes, he’s indisposed. Wale Edun is about 69 years old. He suddenly fell ill. As we are talking, he is in Nigeria. He is recuperating. He’s around,” Onanuga said on Sunday evening. Earlier, the Presidency confirmed that Mr. Olayemi Cardoso, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, would lead the country’s delegation to the World Bank and International Monetary Fund Annual Meetings in Washington, DC, starting Monday, October 13, in place of Wale Edun. According to Onanuga, “Cardoso, as the alternate Governor, replaces the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr Wale Edun, who is indisposed.” The statement added that the Nigerian delegation will also include the Minister of State for Finance, Doris Uzoka-Anete. Meanwhile, President Tinubu departed Abuja on Sunday, October 12, for Rome, the capital of Italy, to participate in the Aqaba Process Heads of State and Government Level Meeting, with special focus on the security crisis in West Africa. The meeting, which will begin on October 14, will bring together Heads of State and Government, senior intelligence and military officials from African countries, and representatives of intergovernmental and non-governmental organisations to discuss the evolving security challenges in West Africa. The Aqaba Process Meeting is a counter-terrorism initiative launched by King Abdullah II of Jordan in 2015. It is co–chaired by the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and the Italian Government. It recognises the complex security challenges confronting West Africa, including the expansion of terrorist networks, the growing crime-terror nexus, and the increasing overlap between land-based terrorism in the Sahel and the maritime piracy in the Gulf of Guinea. Edun was appointed by President Tinubu as Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy on August 21, 2023. Their professional relationship dates back to Tinubu’s tenure as Governor of Lagos State, where Edun served as Commissioner for Finance from 1999 to 2004. He has overseen Nigeria’s fiscal policy, economic planning, and coordination of financial institutions. Edun has been a central figure in Tinubu’s economic team since his appointment in August 2023; therefore, his temporary exit could impact ongoing fiscal reforms and budget planning. Despite health concerns, he was recently involved in budget discussions with the Senate on Thursday. https://saharareporters.com/2025/10/12/finance-minister-wale-edun-sick-recuperating-home-no-replacement-planned-tinubu Cc: Mynd44 nlfpmod fergie001 |

Basically, this is Saharareporters walking back on their fake news and admitting that they lied in their initial publication. Wale Edun is not down with stroke and he has not been flown out of the country. He’s at home in Abuja and was even at a government function last Thursday. Sowore should take it easy with the false publication while Nairaland should also not be quick to push breaking news from Saharareporters to the homepage. |

Government of lies, for liars and based on lies and propaganda. When you see this kinds of back and forth, just know that the real situation of things is the opposite. Let Wale Edun do a live press interview session and not paid NL propagandists doing damage control for his disposition or in disposition. They lie so much to cover many lies |

seunmsg:Going by history of Sahara reporters, I think there's an element of truth in this news. The fact remains that the minister is sick. Just that Sahara reporters don't know the exact nature of the sickness yet. Hence the speculation that he's down with stroke. |
| Re: Finance Minister Wale Edun Is Sick But Recuperating At Home, No Replacement Plan by helinues: 4:27am On Oct 13, 2025 |
Omihanifa:Speculation is different from reaching conclusion. He claimed Edun had a stroke which is something not verified, also he claimed he was flown abroad which also not verified. Both can't be coincidence but deliberate |

Omihanifa:Being sick is one thing, lying that the sickness is stroke and that he was flown on emergency out of the country is another thing. They can report his sickness without embellishing the story with lies. |

This is very poor journalism. Haba Sowore! When will you stop this? Instead of you to come right out and say you carried a fake news you are now retwisting your inefficiency in news reportage with the half-ass write-up. |

Omihanifa:Sahara didn't speculate anything. Their source who was not authorized to speak on the matter told them it was stroke. APC defenders wailed because the source was nameless and so the story must be fake news. Now, another nameless source who's not authorized to speak told Sahara that the sickness is serious but not stroke but also won't tell what the nature of the sickness is, now APC defenders here believe Sahara now without dismissing the news even though the source is again nameless. So you see my friend, these laptop boys only accept news from Sahara when it suits them. |

BeardedMeat:So he’s sick and we don’t know the nature of the sickness. What about the part where he was said to have been flown abroad when he’s at home in Abuja recuperating. How do you also explain that? |
| Re: Finance Minister Wale Edun Is Sick But Recuperating At Home, No Replacement Plan by BeardedMeat(m): 8:34am On Oct 13, 2025 |
seunmsg:And you believe the nameless source that said so this time around right? Do you seriously believe that Wale would be seriously sick according to the nameless source and be holed up in his home in Nigeria? Even tinubu had to do a procedure as simple as knee replacement surgery in UK right? And he is not alone in this capital flight of treating simple illnesses abroad. Now, you believe someone whom you accept is "Theriously" sick would not be flown abroad for treatment? Did you forget that flying abroad for them is like going to Onitsha from Owerri? |
| Re: Finance Minister Wale Edun Is Sick But Recuperating At Home, No Replacement Plan by seunmsg(op): 8:53am On Oct 13, 2025 |
BeardedMeat:You see the problem here is that you don’t publish assumptions as fact. I can assume a lot of things based on my bias but that doesn’t make it true. The fact that Saharareporters within one hour published another version of the story that completely puts a lie to the first story should tell you that they knew quite well that the first publication was completely false. In journalism, the journalist should do everything to establish the facts before rushing to press. Saharareporters have the capacity to verify when someone has left the country. They’ve delivered on way more complex investigation. What they published about the Minister is false and indefensible. |
