14 Children Die After Taking Cough Syrup — A Wake-Up Call for All

A tragic case in India has once again raised global questions about the safety of cough syrups and the strength of pharmaceutical oversight. Fourteen children in Madhya Pradesh reportedly died after taking Coldrif, a cough syrup manufactured by Sresan Pharmaceuticals. Many of the children developed acute kidney failure before passing away.

Authorities have confirmed that a sample from one batch of the syrup contained extremely high levels of diethylene glycol (DEG), a toxic chemical used in industrial products such as antifreeze. Even small amounts of DEG can cause kidney failure, especially in young children. Following this discovery, officials banned the sale of Coldrif, seized bottles from the affected batch, and arrested several company representatives.

The Coldrif tragedy highlights what can happen when safety systems fail but it also shows that strong oversight can make a difference. For most families, cough syrups remain safe when manufactured responsibly and used correctly.

The key lesson isn't to fear common medicines, but to insist on better safeguards, transparency, and accountability so that such incidents never happen again.

That drug is on its way to Nigeria as you read this.
This is the thing. India has regulatory agencies that approved this drug. The company making this drug has certified pharmacists who formulated this drug. Yet this disaster happened.

Imagine how many Indian drugs are all over Nigeria now. Practically most of the drug companies in Nigeria at the moment, source their production from India. We might be already dealing with the possibility that the Indian drugs all over our pharmacies in Nigeria are substandard and harmful even though they have been approved by Nafdac.

This is quite sad!

This incident usually occurs when one of the solvents used in Compounding syrups-- propylene glycol, is substituted with the poisonous ethylene glycol. Therefore, it is important that manufacturers carry out thorough quality control tests on raw materials before using them to manufacture medicines.

This same ethylene glycol was responsible for death of some children in Nigeria sometime ago after taking "My pikin" teething remedy. Nigeria needs to step up quality assurance practices and pharmacovigilance to ensure there's no repeat of such careless deaths in the country.

Also, there's urgent need to step up regulation of all the pharmaceutical value chain in the country and ensure that only qualified pharmacists and registered pharmacies get involved in pharmacy practice. There should be no more patent medicine practice in Nigeria! If incidents like the above happens in Nigeria, it'll be very difficult to curtail because withdrawal will not be easily carried out as the batch of products must have gone into many unregulated patent medicine stores making it difficult to withdraw them!

Drug dealers frizzed their drug into a BIG Box shaped iceblock

unfortunately an ice that was padded With drugs was sold to a Primary School who used that same ice To make A cold joice for the pupils

Over 50 kids died after consuming that drink that was prepared with that same ice that was laced With drugs😤😤
