South Africa are back among football’s elite. The team coached by Hugo Broos sealed their qualification for the 2026 World Cup after a 3-0 win over Rwanda on the final matchday of the African qualifiers — a result that allowed them to edge out Benin and Nigeria in one of the tightest groups on the continent.

With 18 points out of a possible 30, the Bafana Bafana proved their consistency and discipline in a qualifying zone where every result mattered. The victory sparked scenes of joy in Johannesburg, where thousands of fans celebrated the end of a long and painful wait.

This qualification ends a 16-year drought without a World Cup appearance. The last time South Africa participated was in 2010, when they hosted the tournament and filled the world with vuvuzelas, color, and emotion. Before that, they appeared in France 1998 and Korea-Japan 2002, achieving their best-ever finish in 17th place.

Now, a new generation led by Percy Tau, Lyle Foster, and Teboho Mokoena will aim to restore the identity and competitiveness of a national team eager to reclaim its place among the top.

The 2026 World Cup, to be held across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will mark the tournament’s historic expansion to 48 teams — and South Africa will be part of Africa’s largest-ever contingent.

Their mission is clear: to reach the Round of 16 for the first time in their history and prove that South African football is on the rise once again. With a dynamic style and a core of young talent, the Bafana Bafana want the world to hear their battle cry once more: “Shosholoza!”

You now see that it was Nigeria that many of you Southies love to hate so much that actually gave joy to your country.

Nigeria could have decided to sabotage everything by allowing Benin republic to win and appear at the world cup for the first time. undecided

By the way, what is wrong with that South African commentator? grin grin grin

If it weren't for us losing that 3 points earlier, you wouldn't even have hopes for the play offs grin.

@ the bolded , that would have painted your star players as losers and not worthy of the praise they recieve . Their ego and reputation is what drove them to win not us,don't get it twisted . We all had something to lose and gain going into those fields yesterday. The only country that had nothing to fight for was Rwanda .

What I am still trying to wrap my head around is that commentator. He was obviously biased and behaving like a child.

What is "NTUARI" in commentary bikonu

At a time when the shot went into the goal post with force, he shouted "Weeeeee". As if the shot was targeted at him. These South Africans self.

grin grin grin
Re: Fireworks Light Up Stadium As Bafana Bafana Qualify For World Cup - PICTURES by Afritop(m):
I blame the super eagles and NFF for this.

Out of the 10 matches South Africa played in the group, 7 were at home and only 3 matches away.
And NFF did not complain about it the whole time this happened. It’s good that they deducted 3 points from them anyway for fielding an ineligible player even though they can only muster 18 points from 10 matches.
Whereas Benin republic that played all their 10 matches away from home because they lack a FIFA approved stadium had 17 points.

Because of their silence the under 17 flying eagles were unable to qualify to the World Cup and under 17 Afcon because WAFU put the team in most difficult position to qualify.
Re: Fireworks Light Up Stadium As Bafana Bafana Qualify For World Cup - PICTURES by ARISHEM:
They are lucky. Infact very lucky.

And super eagles wouldn’t have qualified to the playoffs if not for the 4th goal scored by Frank Onyeka. And if Eritrea did not withdraw, we wouldn’t have leapfrogged others like Burkina faso who had more points than ours. shocked

Teams with largely home based players are qualifying to the World Cup, but our very own star-studded European based players have left us with headaches and calculators.

They did it with local players. I am proud of them for investing in their league and building a society. We dont know how much jobs a well managed local league will give us.
See eh, forget noise, SA is miles ahead of Nigeria. Pls dont come here with nonsesne data. That country has working football league, working basketball league, working cycling league, swimming league, baseball league, bike leage, race, etc. These are modern and sweet to the viewers and actually provide jobs via these leagues.
A well managed football league in Nigeria will solve 10 percent unemployment issue. Damn! we are just something else. SA is building a strong local league and if they continue, they will surely become a strong force. Soundowns did wonders against a German giant at the club world cup.

Lol... More than half of those qualifying will not cross the group stages too.

So, making up the numbers remains a key part of the tournament.

Even those that will finish as runner-ups won't be remembered by most people after the tournament.

So yes, qualifying on its own is a big deal... If not, why Nigerians dey press calculator upandan since last week?!! grin
