A journey through Nigeria’s leadership — from independence to today. I compile archival clips of every major Nigerian leader since 1960 and show how tone, cadence and delivery shaped their power. Stick around. 🎙️🇳🇬

The queen, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa and General Yakubu Gowon accents seems to be the best.

General Murtala Ramat Mohammed and General Sanni Abacha accent with the "immediate effect" as their trademark tonation

Why must you sound British to feel elevated?

What is wrong with your Nigerian accent?

Nothing new. The British and those they trained were the tutors of leaders at the time. You can’t expect someone born in the early 2000s to sound like that unless he/she schooled abroad.

Exactly.

I asked a GF forming Ajebo if I am supposed to have Liverpool accent.

Back when I was younger and working in French countries.... Francophone girls always said my accent was sexy

Africans often like to just make their own things inferior. Our culture is at times better appreciated by foreigners.

Let is be noted in history that, 15 leaders came before the demigod descended to correct the wrongs and imperfection's of all.

God bless His Excellency, President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR)

We place too much value in English, most of the smartest people i know can't speak proper English.
Now look at people like FFK, very eloquent but the same time eloquently talking rubbish.

If he can use fake accent how do we believe the history he collated? Fake will also be embedded in it.

Abubakar Tafawa Balewa spoke as an eloquent orator, you can feel the power and confidence in his speech, his words carry so much weight.

Funny, he is an aboki, I don't know where today's abokis got their "I dey craze" accents from.

Worst of them all is that fulani that brought recession to Nigeria twice, first as military head of state and as president...he was just an embodiment of failure...you all know his name.

Tafa Balewa makes me the proudest.....and no, it's not because it's a British accent, but it is undoubtedly the clearest accent that English speakers worldwide would understand.

Good one for getting Ironsi, I'm not sure I've ever heard him speak, it was nice and clear.

Zik of Africa and Awo, were the ones that started using Nigerian English up and down among that early set... we have them to thank/blame for OBJ and the litany of accents that have followed him.

Are you saying Tafawa Balewa wasn't a leader of the Nigeria government and that Zik was the actual leader?

Just gets worse down the line.....compare tafawa balewa's erudition to what we have been having from obj to the one there now.... Would have preferred there spontaneous speeches and not prepared scripts to really show their intellectual capacities.

Oratory skill is important. However, our focus should be on their achievements as leaders not accent or command of the English language.

What accent do Nigerians have?
You are speaking another man's language and then claiming to have your own accent.

Why don't you stick to your own language?
If you must speak another man's language, speak it the way he does it.
Its called common sense.

True but anywhere in the world there are coarser and finer accents. Right here in Nigeria one can say that Hausa sounds smoother and easier on the ear than most others.

Tafawa Balewa had the clearest accent, though, I can still hear his native accent affecting very tiny bit of his words., and the worst was Buhari. Damn! He had a terrible accent affected so much by his native tongue. He pronounced words so wrongly. The worst Yoruba is Sonekan...his egba (oe where was he from) was so thick in his pronunciation. Other northerners with very thick pronunciations are Gowon and Muritala Mohammed. Jonathan's own is a bit better, but guy man doesn't know how to pronounce "th". Lol. Tinubu is so clear. IBB too isn't that clear. IBB is just in the middle. Mehn...that Abacha own worse. Lol....but better than Buhari....that Buhari....that man na the wrongest man. His accent was too poor. Lol.
