I as a person prefer herbs to synthetic drugs, but buying already mixed herbs from these vendors? God forbid! I wonder how people even find it comfortable putting in their mouth something they're not sure how it's mixed.
But it has been working for us years after years.

If you asked them how many times should I take or drink it? They tell you "iwo sha ma mu". Just keep drinking it!

Apart from treatment of Pile (Jedi jedi) I am not taking that thing.

Their is efficacy in it but there is no regulation or manual like the normal Pills and Syrup.

The attack on agbo is a diversion from the business of fake drugs in Onitsha which has been a problem since independence ans evidenced by the debate ant the federal parliament in 1965 below and has now reached epidemic proportions.

This is why they banned history. So the new generation don’t know all the things happening are not new and the actors are the same.

Is there a problem with agbo yes but a bigger problem is the proliferation of fake medicines by the usual peddlers of fake everything.

Agbo is gotten from leaves and tree bark, but none can say the same about all these fake products produced in many 2 by 2 shops.

Most people don't take agbo. I can't remember when last I took any .I would even prefer preparing this on my own instead of buying outside.

#Stop producing fake consumables

I know of a lady then who was pregnant and took agbo to treat infection. When she gave birth, child did not survive the next day.
I am not against agbo but use only regulated or approved vendors. Those who hawk it on the street are a risk.

While the dangers of unregulated herbal mixtures like agbo are real and alarming, it's important to acknowledge that for many Nigerians, especially those in low-income communities, agbo is more than just a drink—it represents an accessible and affordable form of healthcare.

Traditional medicine has deep cultural roots in Nigeria. Long before hospitals were widespread, our forefathers relied on herbs to treat various ailments—and many still do today. In fact, some of these herbal remedies are known to have real therapeutic value when prepared correctly and used responsibly. For pregnant women, elderly people, or men seeking vitality, turning to agbo may not be out of ignorance, but rather from trust passed down through generations, or out of necessity where access to quality healthcare is limited or too expensive.

The real issue, then, isn't traditional medicine itself—it's the lack of regulation, standardization, and proper education around it.

Cracking down harshly on agbo sellers without providing alternatives may risk alienating communities and driving the practice underground. Instead, a more balanced approach is needed—one that involves:

Training and certifying traditional herbal practitioners

Providing access to clean, safe preparation methods

Collaborating with communities to identify and preserve beneficial herbs

Educating the public about the risks of contaminated or chemically-enhanced mixtures

Rather than vilifying a long-standing tradition, let’s reform it—safely and scientifically—so that agbo can evolve into a trusted complement to modern healthcare, not a silent killer.

Having seen many people go down with kidney and liver problem which are mostky life style and one of the vulprit6is agbo either taken as a man or those pregnant women taking them die their unbien baby what is prevalence here in Lagos and this is likely to affect the unbien child also .

Across many Nigerian streets, agbo sellers advertise their herbal concoctions as miracle cures for all ailments—from malaria to infertility. Yet behind these claims lies a silent public health threat.

Most of these mixtures are prepared by illiterate individuals in unhygienic environments, often beside gutters or open markets. Instead of using safe, consumable alcohol, many rely on industrial alcohol and harmful chemicals to “boost potency.” These unhygienic and unscientific methods expose consumers to serious health risks.

Medical experts have linked the frequent consumption of agbo to a rising incidence of kidney failure, liver damage, stomach ulcers, and hypertension. Sadly, many victims end up spending huge sums on dialysis and medical treatments that could have been avoided.

It is time for the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to clamp down on unregistered herbal sellers and enforce strict regulations on the sale of traditional mixtures. Alongside this, massive public sensitization should be carried out to educate people about the dangers of unregulated herbal consumption.

If these steps are taken, not only will countless lives be saved, but the money currently wasted on treating preventable kidney and liver diseases can be channeled into more productive and meaningful causes for a healthier future.

They say the battle for your health isn’t just fought in hospitals — it’s fought in your mind.

For centuries, our ancestors survived on agbo, the potent herbal mixtures made from roots, bark, and leaves. It wasn’t fancy, it wasn’t bottled in shiny packaging, but it worked. Then came the modern world — pills, injections, and the idea that anything not produced in a laboratory is “unsafe.”

But what if that narrative didn’t grow naturally? What if it was planted?

According to whispers among traditional healers, powerful pharmaceutical corporations—those who make billions from chronic disease drugs—see local herbal remedies as a threat. Every time someone chooses agbo over a tablet, they lose a customer. Every time a community healer cures malaria with roots instead of pills, their profit graph dips.

So they allegedly fund “research reports,” sponsor “public health campaigns,” and pay influencers to warn against herbal mixtures. They push the idea that agbo is dangerous, unregulated, or “backward,” while quietly patenting the same herbs in their labs under new names like “PhytoPure” or “GreenExtract.”

Even some local doctors, unknowingly or otherwise, echo the same message: Don’t drink herbs, they’ll kill your kidney. Meanwhile, the same companies that fund kidney treatments are also accused of investing in the campaigns demonizing herbs. Convenient, isn’t it?

In this theory, the goal isn’t just health—it’s control. If they can convince you that only what comes in a packet is medicine, they own your belief system, your sickness, and your healing.

And so, the battle continues: science versus tradition, profits versus culture, agbo versus “Big Pharma.”

2.why did nafdac permit la casera to be sold?,it was Nigerians that decided to download and install sense and boycott that evil drink with nafdac number.
3.why did the minister of health make a u turn about GMOs.

You are either clever by half or just mischievious.

Your article portrayed all agbo as bad and fake drugs but as you well know, the non-alcoholic agbo poses no threat as those with alcohol you described here.

Don't tell is agbo is bad.

Tell us alcohol is bad.

The fake drugs in circulation in our society is over 100 trillion naira worth of drugs but people are tagging agbo to kidney failures.

How many people are drinking agbo? No one is talking about different kinds of deadly chemicals criminals in food sectors are using to preserve their markets...

No one is talking about the bad mixtures the red oil and groundnut oil sellers are mixing with their oil to maximize their profit at the detriments of others health.

We have fake alcohol in different brands in circulation, fake soft drinks and even baby formulae.
These are items that Nigerians take daily compare to agbo.

Anyone who want to take herb must also try to prepare it themselves if possible.

Those people selling agbo with friend ponmo, fish, and meat garnished with pepper sauce are not selling those things to heal you but to damage your health for their own gain.

You cannot be drinking agbo jedi every evening.
Thank You very much
Don't mind them

what is the definition of "illiteracy"
What concerns ability to read and write English with specialized skills passed from parents to children in a form of traditional education?
