Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has stirred political discussions once again after revealing that three more governors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are preparing to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) — a move that could further destabilize Nigeria’s leading opposition party. Fayose made this revelation on Wednesday, October 15, during an interview on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme. His comments followed the recent defection of Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, to the APC, which sparked renewed debate about the PDP’s dwindling unity and influence.

“Let me tell you, there are three more governors that will leave soon. There will be five remaining. The five remaining, one of them will struggle to catch the ticket — and they all know that the ticket is an ordinary tissue paper,” Fayose stated.

‘The PDP Is Destroying Itself’ — Fayose Blames Internal Power Struggles

The outspoken former governor accused some sitting PDP governors of undermining the party from within, claiming that their hunger for control and dominance has weakened the opposition.

According to him, the same internal divisions that plagued the PDP during the 2023 general elections are still festering today, leaving the party vulnerable to collapse.

“They are largely killing the party because they want to control it. This is exactly what happened in 2023,” Fayose said.

He dismissed allegations that President Bola Tinubu or the ruling APC were behind the wave of defections, asserting that the crisis was self-inflicted.

“President Tinubu should not be blamed for PDP’s problems. The PDP is sick — and remains perpetually sick without a cure in view,” Fayose declared.

‘The People Who Killed the PDP Know Themselves’

Fayose didn’t mince words in assigning blame, insisting that those who brought the PDP to its knees are well aware of their roles.

“Those who killed the party know themselves. There is a difference between a former governor and a sitting governor,” he added, suggesting that current officeholders are the main architects of the PDP’s internal collapse.

The former governor, who remains a registered member of the PDP, made it clear that he has distanced himself from the party’s repair efforts, emphasizing that the current leadership must take full responsibility for the crisis.

“I am still in the PDP, but I am not part of those trying to fix it. The leadership must own its failure,” he stated.

Defections Continue to Shake PDP

Fayose’s remarks come amid rising concerns over the PDP’s shrinking political influence, following the defection of several governors — including those from Enugu, Delta, Akwa Ibom, and Bayelsa States — to the APC.

Political observers say the trend could severely weaken the PDP’s chances ahead of the 2027 general elections, leaving the APC with an even stronger national grip.

Meanwhile, Fayose’s prediction has sparked mixed reactions among party loyalists and analysts. While some view his statement as a wake-up call to fix the opposition’s internal cracks, others believe it signals further disarray within the PDP ranks.

As 2027 draws closer, the once-dominant opposition party appears to be losing more ground, not just to external competition but to its own internal divisions and ambitions.

In my opinion, Nigeria is already a one-party state. Obi, Atiku and ADC are not serious opposition to Tinubu's 2027 agenda. Tinubu will crush the PDP and other mainstream oppositions completely by mid 2026 through all these mass defections. The only real opposition force I see currently in Nigeria is Sowore because he is always ready to match his words with action. While Tinubu is busy building a formidable coalition, Obi and Atiku are busy releasing press statements and making empty criticisms on the pages of newspapers. I hope Nigerians will give Sowore the support come 2027 if he runs.

The opposition led by Atiku and Peter obi are very weak and bunch of cowards. Tinubu is no longer playing a gentleman's politics, infact the ruling party is now playing very dirty kind of politics,why is the opposition looking weak and disorganized even at the face of the ruling party now playing dirty

Mr T is taking advantage of those governor's greed to lure them into his party.

The offer seems to be that he would help them with their election spending so they don't throw away too much of their loot to get reelected.

It'd a good offer because rather than spend heavily against Mr T. candidate, he will rather help them settle delegates and even INEC if necessary.
They won't also need to settle corruption tribunal when they leave office.

The only problem they're not thinking of is the long term. Mr T. would get to inherit their support base.

He wants to own Nigeria.

Isn't it ironic that Tinubu prevented crisis in his home state by leaving the APC structure in the firm grip of his cousin, Oyetola but is actively handing over the party structure to strangers in other opposition states, thereby jeopardising political ambitions of other APC politicians in those states? An implosion or covert sabotage is inevitable. I expect every PDP governor to leave the party to take advantage of the "unopposed" largesse that Tinubu is sharing for his own sole benefit.

Tinubu had been in politics before they ever born their fathers. After Tinubu, the next president will still be APC if Nigeria will still be one.

See, why blame Tinubu for the folly of another person?

Since Diri entered there, Seriake his godfather has removed himself from.his governance, good or bad. It's been Diri throughout so how will a possible successor be the problem! It's APC lies to justify his defection. When Diri handpicked his chosen Senator for Bayelsa Central and Reps, Seriake didn't stand in his way, there has been mutual respect all round.

Bayelsa is totally PDP from top to bottom except 2/3 House of Assembly seats, all NASS seats is PDP. Again, he has performed at least well, I have been visiting Bayelsa almost thrice a year from when Seriake was there and I know the State has improved albeit marginally. He entered into an unholy alliance with them for his re-election, let him State his personal reasons.

It is simple, Tinubu has made it clear to the Southern Governors that there is plenty, I mean, plenty in Abuja...it's our turn! Come and seat at the table and be decision-makers not just for 2027 but even after.

The Squeeze Matters:

After Enugu State Governor Mbah failed to wrestle the PDP National Secretary position from Wike, it became clear that he won't get a second term ticket with PDP. Moreover, when the PDP leadership visited INEC and discovered that both signatures of the National chairman and Secretary are accepted in any correspondence with the electoral body. It became clear that his misadventure in the National Secretary saga will consume him and Makinde. Where is Ude Okoye?. Gone with the wind. As long as Anyanwu is the legally recognized PDP National Secretary, he won't sign the letter inviting INEC to the convention, INEC won't attend it, No new NWC, no primaries, no submission of names for national and state elections. Wike has PDP by the balls.

I once saw a powerful man that beats the wife periodically, until she got hold of his balls one beautiful morning. All his muscles became flaccid and he shouted for the interventions of neighbors. While the wife was shouting ' you go kill me today', he was shouting ' you wan kill me'. With wisdom, we pleaded with the wife to release the powerful man's balls from her vicious grip. As soon as she released the 'kidnapped' balls, the man not minding the presence of neighbors brought out his package to see the extent of damage done. We all saw that the man's package was huge (one of the disadvantages of a big package). Little wonder, she was able to grab a handful. The mistake the man made was to attack his wife wearing a wrapper and no pants that beautiful morning.

PDP went fighting Wike wearing a wrapper and no pants, now he has the PDP by the balls. Wike is squeezing Governors out of PDP and will eventually squeeze Presidential candidates out of the party.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the squeeze is on.
