Nigeria’s bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games has come to nought following the Commonwealth board’s recommendation of India’s Ahmedabad as the host city for the Centenary Games.

Nigeria presented Abuja as its host city for the 2030 Games, while India put forward Ahmedabad.

A final decision will be taken on November 26 at the body’s General Assembly, where the full membership of Commonwealth Sport will deliberate on it. Getting the Games’ hosting rights would also be significant in India’s quest to become an Olympic host in 2036, also in Ahmedabad.

The board said it will propose that Ahmedabad, in the western Indian state of Gujarat, be granted full Commonwealth Sport membership for approval at the General Assembly in Glasgow on November 26.

The 2030 Games are set to commemorate 100 years since the inaugural event in Hamilton, Canada. The North American country was expected to be in the running, but did not bid.

India, which first hosted the Games in Delhi in 2010, pledged an event reflecting the Commonwealth’s diversity and scale. The 2022 Games were shifted to Birmingham after the South African city of Durban withdrew due to financial issues.

The board also said it would continue working with Nigeria to help realise its ambition of hosting future Games, including potential consideration for 2034.

Nigeria lost the 2014 hosting rights to the Scottish city of Glasgow.

At the final bid presentation in Colombo, Sri Lanka, on November 9, 2007, Nigeria’s delegation, led by former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon, was advised to endeavour to put the country’s infrastructure in order before presenting another bid for the Games.

Before nko? With the level of insecurity in Nigeria which right thinking organization will award the country hosting rights for an international event like the commonwealth games? You want Boko Haram and Bandits to have a field day?
They only saved the country from embarrassment, not like we even have proper infrastructure.

This statement above was made as far back as 2007. Unfortunately, the same infrastructural deficiency still persists till today 2025.

Nigeria should not think of hosting anything for now until her citizens are guaranteed of daily 3 square meals, high reduction of poverty and general improved standard of living. These should be the federal governments, state and local government maintenance priority.

Very good , am in support of Nigerias rejection bid, they should use all the funds that will be used to upgrade stadiums to buy drugs and medical equipments into various hospitals in Nigeria.

politicians have lost the bid to stash their pockets with millions of dollars .
That aside we deserve to host the Commonwealth games but this look down should serve as an elixir by incorporating modern rail transit for Abuja .

This week someone was abducted right beside Sahad stores in Abuja in the center of town, last week it was robbery in Katampe in same Abuja which resulted in the deaths of two victims...this is inside Abuja o.
