an institution supposedly founded on christian principles of charity is allegedly engaging in blatant wage theft. they preach about tithing and giving to the poor, while simultaneously underpaying their own staff. this isn't divine, it's diabolical.

this isn't just a covenant uni problem. its a symptom of a larger system that devalues labor and prioritizes profit above all else.

workers are constantly exploited, and any protest is quelled. this is a big system with a lot of gears.

this is just another example of human greed and exploitation. whether it's a corporation, institution or government, the powerful will always try to take advantage of the weak. the only question is will the weak do anything about it? probably not.

I think the cheque itself is far more expensive than the sum written on it

What kind of services was he/she engaged to do for 14yrs that the church (business institution) decided to brazenly hand a cheque of 102k as gratuity? A poster even said some do have negative balances to clear with the university in some cases.

I know of a family friend who pulled his wife out of Deeper Life High School and opened a shop for her, now she doing better than even the principal. Unionism or not I think the churches are supposed to be more humane in their treatment of staffs cuz that's the purest form of the gospel. The money from setting up these institutions came from donations and tithes for goodness sake. Let's not forget that most members can't even afford to send their wards to their church school.

Paying Gratuity is still a thing in Nigeria.

Gratuity is actually your entitlement withheld during service and paid in bulk upon exit.

Though not applicable in the UK where you get paid your monthly salary and your pension remains intact until you reach retirement age.

But this university has lots of explaining to do, otherwise this is modern slavery.

By the way, God does not own any University. And if He wanted to own one, it can’t be situated in Nigeria!

The amount ₦102K is what Isaac or David Jnr or Oyedepo grandkids will spend in one sitting at a fancy restaurant and the church has the mind to give a human being as a golden shake for years of service

Well, I won't be quick to judge. I'd love to hear from the university too. If you are over 30 and still make emotional comments like Gen-Zs, you haven't learnt anything.

Will the job not determine the amount of money he gets paid as pension? Was he a lecturer or a cleaner? Did he take loans? Now he is retiring is the school supposed to ignore the loans? Nonsense!!! Stop blaming Covenant without having the facts.
