I don't think so. Have heard cases like this before and it's not cos of outstanding balance. The am stress of carrying it to another place before you load especially if it finish at night or midnight is annoying.

Hello Nairalanders,

I'm really frustrated, tired and confused about the whole issue.

The prepaid metre in my apartment is misbehaving seriously. This is a new metre that was bought three years ago when the house was built by the landlord. We are just four occupants. One of the apartments has a room and parlor, while the other Three apartments are just a room self-con each.

We've being recharging the metre since all this while, but last week, I recharged and token was not sent to me. I still recharged again to confirm if it was network issues, but same thing happened. No Token was Received by me. The response I got was our metre is owing. How come?
How is our metre owing?

The kind of Prepaid Metre we have isn't the one you recharge on. There's a device like a calculator/POS terminal that uses battery. That's what we use whenever we want to recharge. The battery part of it isn't even working, we have to plug it to the socket before we can ON it and dial the token to recharge. The challenge is that, if we allow the whole units in the metre to completely run out or get exhausted and the light goes off, we will have to go to our neighbors' houses to plug it and recharge, and we must not go too far from our apartment, if not, it wouldn't work.

How do we resolve this issue because the units there would soon be exhausted completely
Please, kindly reach out to AEDC customer care and copy NERC forum office.

ALSO ITS NOT ABOUT GETTING A NEW METER. MOST PEOPLE ON POSTPAID THINK WHEN THEY MOVE TO PREPAID THEIR OLD BILLS ARE WASHED AWAY. NOO. EVERY THING IS ON THE SYSTEM, IT WILL TAKE A WHILE BEFORE NEPA REMEMBERS YOU. SO BEST OPTION IS GO TO THEIR OFFICE AND NEGOTIATE HOW TO OFFSET THE BILL, THEY MIGHT TELL YOU TO PAY HALF THE MONEY OR 50/50 RECHARGE.

EVEN IF YOU USE ANOTHER APP TO BUY THE TOKEN, NOTHING WILL BE GENERATED FOR YOU.

https://infocheck.abujaelectricity.com/

Open this link and put your meter number. There is a debt on the metre probably a penalty from bypass or the premises was owing debt before migrating to a prepaid metre.

This will tell you how much is being owed on the metre. You can decide whther to pay it of ot is reasonable or go off grid

Just reload 3k and it should clear the balance on the meter. You are owing about 2465 naira

OP, I had the same issues last week and this was how I solved it. Go to this website and input your meter number; https://infocheck.abujaelectricity.com/

It will show you the amount of debt AEDC claimed you owe under "balance."

You can also go to any of their nearest office and they will check for you with their system. Once you recharge any amount above the said debt, you will get a token.

If you are using a mojec meter, recently the discos sent a message notifying owners that the preloaded 40 kwh would be retrieved at the next recharge. You didn't get the message because probably your phone number is not what was used to register the meter. If you recharge more than the preloaded units, you will be credited with the balance of the units.

Same thing happened to my metre here in Abuja. Compliant to them thereafter after the 14days if there is no response, write a formal complaint to the NEC forum, there will look at the case and if there was no case of bypass with evidence there will ask them to expunge the debt

I suffered same thing and my meter is berely one year old. Luckily I know someone who works with them and I reached out, I was told that the meters were preloaded with about 11k to test run them. That is what we are all paying for. And you would not get units until it is cleared out. I tried to complain but was told that messages were sent in that regard. I didnt get any message, but that is what is happening. So until you guys clear out rhat debt, no unit for you. Thank you.

Don't allow the unit to be exhausted before recharging. It is as simple as that. I have the same type of prepaid meter though my own battery section is working but I don't allow the unit be exhausted before recharging.

You need to reload substantial amount exceeding the hidden unit costs the meter was installed with to offset what is being owed. AEDC didn't request for this initially. I had similar experience yesterday till I loaded 24k and got some units after the hidden cost owed. Some others had similar experience. Someone explained to me that the initial unsuccessful payment i made by online apps would be included.

AEDC are thieves they did that sometimes last week..

Actually there has been outstanding on your meter but you guy were not aware.. so the unit you have been getting is only 50% of the value.. they do this to over 50% of their customers.. silently exploiting Nigerians and we havent been able to do anything about it.

They claimed the % deduction is either the token that came with the meter or an offence fine, maybe meter bypass fine they found out.

My advice - visit their office and request the balance on your meter - e go shock you to the bone

This is a case of pre loaded units.... a preloaded unit is the unit that came with new meters, so they are collecting back the money .
