Ogwumike hopes that her fight to try to play for Nigeria will help shed some light on the process and “how people decide to pick their nationalities when they want to represent their country.” Ogwumike said that when she was younger, she was told by USA Basketball not to try to get a passport from another country. She had been trying to play for the country, where her parents were born, since the Tokyo Games in 2021. Eeya.. I blame her parents and I hope others who raise their children not to identify as Nigerian can see the folly of their actions. It's a spiritual thing; if you deny the land, it will deny you too and if you bless it, it will bless you too. While Ashley Plumptre, with mixed race parentage, identified as a Nigerian right from her childhood, her parents got her her Nigerian passport early and she eventually played for Nigeria, Nneka, with 100% Nigerian parentage, both parents born and raised in Nigeria, was raised to be a Non-Nigerian by Nigerian parents, was eventually denied to play for Nigeria. Smh. Many of you will learn las las that inferiority complex can deny you of a lot of things in life. Your adopted countries know that if you can abandon your own land then you are a rolling stone who will abandon them someday too ![]() I sincerely hope that she will raise her own kids to be Nigerians.

lordm:It's all over for her. Even her younger sister, Chinenye, has been affected by the horrible and unpatriotic choices of her parents. There are many Nigerians in diaspora who will learn this lesson in a bitter way with the way some of them run down Nigeria because of the hate they used to raise some of them. They raised her to be American and she is just a victim of decisions she later realized was unfavorable to her. She has regularized her Nigerian citizenship, albeit late, and she has an opportunity to correct the mistake her parents did with her by raising her own children to identify as Nigerias. |

The fact that we are looking for overseas Nigerians and foreign born Nigerians to play for us shows the poor state of basketball in this country. No grassroots basketball programs, no high school programs, weak university basketball programs, etc etc. We don't take sports seriously in this country except for the national football teams. |

The same rubbish they did with Nneka her elder sister. NBBF should take up this case....we miss Tijani Umar at the helm of affairs. |

Some decisions may affect you even when you are not the one that made those decisions. Her parent's had their reasons why they wanted their children to be Americans, unfortunately she doesn't want that but the decision has been made on her behalf by her parents already, she just have to accept reality and move on. |

nairalanda1:It's like you want the book of lamentations all to yourself. You are just ignorant by thinking that if your citizens play in foreign leagues it now means your national sports is backwards. You don’t know anything about sports development at all How many Argentine team players that won world cup play in Argentine league and why is it that England and Spain never win world cup despite having very lucrative league? You should ask yourself next time before posting your lamentation. |

Stolen:Many international sporting federations don't like senior players playing for more thanone country or any country apart from the country of their birth Some years ago, fifa allowed it, and all of a sudden Qatar showed up with three brilliant Brazilian players. That led to fears that rich countries would buy players to play for them Fiba prefers that at the end countries develop their homegrown talent, not bring it from abroad. That way basketball becomes even more popular worldwide, and countries like Nigeria don't use foreign players to cover their defective local basketball programs |

FreeStuffsNG:The level of ignorance though. She had been trying to play for the country, where her parents were born, since the Tokyo Games in 2021.Of course she has been trying since 2021 Tokyo Ganes for the singular reason that the USA did not pick her. Apparently, Nigeria wasn't her first choice as she has been representing the USA consistently up until when they stooped picking her. There's not a single player that will turn down USA to come play for Nigeria. I dare you to mention any player that turned down the West to play for Nigeria across any sport. |

FreeStuffsNG:1. Oga, I don't think I abused you. 2. Why can't you guys respond intelligently and without getting angry all the time? 3. Seriously man, calm down a bit. 4. We don't have a strong enough basketball scene in this country and that's for the men. Women is even worse The league is weak , and at secondary school level and university level, basketball is weak or absent. We don't have enough people playing to get a strong domestic team I know you guys will say I am hating on Nigeria, but as a casual basketball fan since the early 90s, I know that our getting overseas Nigerians is to cover up for the fact that basketball as a whole is weak in Nigeria USA does well because they have strong basketball programs from primary school up. Alongside a strong amateur league. Even in villages , there are basketball teams. Nigeria doesn't have that. And you are here shouting at me for telling the truth |

She was NOT well informed. We have a "White lady" playing for us in Super Falcons. Ashley's parent did the ground work. Ngozi can forget about playing for Nigeria. She should aim to become a coach in the future. |

Ucheamani:Smh. It's obvious that you didn't read the report or failed to comprehend her frustration and you are literally mocking her loss all over again. Btw, since you don't know, Nigerian Female Basketball team is currently the best in Africa and among the best in the world. Our girls are the best and each recently got rewarded with $100,000! She is the one whose parents' poor choices and unpatriotic decisions denied her of dream to be part of an already successful world class Nigerian team. Many of you will receive sens las las! You are the one who needs Nigeria. |

Stolen:Sure. But we also should develop our local basketball. We can't always rely on foreign Nigerians Plus there is the chance that this one wanted to play for Nigeria because all of a sudden she wants to go to the Olympics. Wonder what she would have said if we didn't qualify or have a chance. |
