[quote author=CoronaVirusPro post=137176946] Of you averagely doing well in Nigeria, can you find same life I the UK?Please define averagely doing well in Nigeria. Cos in UK, if you're legal and pay your bills there is a standard of living which means you will have access to running water, uninterrupted power supply, gas supply, security, free primary & secondary schools, free healthcare at point of need, free medication for children, free opticians for children, police, fire service, refuse collection, How many Nigerians have their kids in private schools?due the relative good level of education in public schools and being free, people do not need to send their children to private school. Each school is inspected and given a rating. Parents tend avoid the few that are rated inadequate. Some Nigerians do send their kids private school if they can afford this for extra curricular activities and lower teacher to pupil ratio. How many stay in highbrow area and live in conducive apartments like they did in Nigeria?Every area has access to basic amenities and you can choose to live in a less or more expensive area. Arguably, these standard areas compete favourably in amenity access with the highbrow areas of Nigeria. The so called highbrow areas of UK are extremely expensive and not necessary to live in to have a good life. There are no absolute ghettos in UK. How many have work-life balance like they do in Nigeria? It'll be interesting to see how you've worked out how there is better work life balance in Nigeria?! Last I checked, your working hours are your working hours in UK, there is less traffic and more modes of transport, there are working regulations to ensure people are not effectively slaves. To work longer hours or more jobs is by choice as you're expected to live within your means. They don't play with holidays and breaks in UK. It's obviously a different lifestyle ( you are expected to spend more time with the children and that's just the way it is.) weather is also different, meaning people are not always outside. You will only appreciate that side of the world when you were never averagely balling in the Nigeria. How many people are actually balling in Nigeria compared to the entire population as I see a lot of people hustling for a daily bread as well? You might be surprised at the number of those balling in UK as well although this comes across differently. E.g. the number of foreign travels every week just for a weekend break even by students as young as 18. What you call doing well over there is still poverty and mental stress for some of us.A few might be at a level in Nigeria where they don't need to work as they have legal residual income (or illicit funds!), the same is the case in UK. However, the majority have to work whether in Nigeria or UK. That is how the economy works. A few cases here and there of people balling in Nigeria or our flamboyant nature of parties and celebrations doesn't defeat this point. If Nigeria were to become a developed country, you'll find that most will just be working in a system that runs the economy, shikena. It is very easy to view these situations within a very narrow view but facts and figures remain true. I thought I should add my 2 cents |

IbeOkehie:Lol! You keep bringing this conversion metric, but you are the forefront of naira devaluation. I think we have debated it previously. Moving to the UK obviously offers him a higher living standard and salary, but in the same UK, its own doctors move to Australia and the US for better salaries. Some British citizens, esp ethnic minorities, study medical courses in Eastern Europe and then return to practice in the UK. He has the right to relocate as medicine is significantly mobile. But the currency conversion has its own nuances beyond just bare numbers. |

EvilMerodack:And you belive in your Tiny mind that the dude is spending all his ernings on taxes and expenses and nothing to save at the end of the month abi. Some of you Nigerians are just not smart i swell. I know so many doctors who are doing so well and they are even building mansions here in Nigeria from their savings working over there. Just last week i had a conversation with a female doctor here in Nigeria and she opened up to me that she is currently doing two jobs and truth is she is just working for survival and their are hardly any doctor in Nigeria currently that is working only one job that any one who is doing that will die of hunger the pain in her heart and even the huge for her to about to start doing hookup then you should know the state the country is in now. |

grandstar:. You visited UK more than decade ago. Medical doctors take home more than £4,000 a month after tax. When Accommodation and other bills deducted, they save at least £2,000 which is equivalent to N4,000,000 a month, readily available to be invested in Nigeria. one year savings is more than his 7 years earning COMBINED while in Nigeria. That is, what he would save in 5 years in the UK, he will never smell it till retirement in Nigeria. |
| Re: Doctor Compares His 7-year Salary In Nigeria And 6-month Salary In The UK by grandstar(m): 5:44pm On Oct 19, 2025 |
Engrghidazuka:You're missing the point. It is the way the doctor presented that was the problem. He said what he has earned in 6 months or so is more than what he made in Nigeria. He said his salary in Nigeria was 185k a month. Multiply by 12 and you have 2.22m.per year. Multiply by 6 years and you have 13.32m over 6 years which is £6,000. £6,000 over 6 months is like £1,000 a month. That waa where the misunderstanding arose. I was in the UK in 2020. I came back 2 days before the British lock down commenced. I was at a private clinic with my dad and two sisters in London. There were 2 Nigerian lab guys working there. One had completed his house in Imo state if I'm correct. The other was either Ibibio or Efik. |

You are the one who don't know what he is saying. Even from nysc camp those days I know how doctors are hot cakes. And this was years ago not recently. So talk more of now. Gerrard59:You still haven't send me my reward for an outstanding comment. I will even accept Japaese babes in short kimonos. Wetin now? You Nigerians simply don't believe in rewarding excellence!!!! You don turn socialist? Two doctors graduate at the same time, let's say 2015. One works in Nigeria at ₦500K per month for 10 years and lives in his parents home free of charge. The other works in the UK for 10 years at prevailing normal wages for a doctor and then returns to Nigeria to live Who is likely to have saved more NAIRA? That's the question that justifies migration. Let's not get into living standards and such, just the raw monetary gain. The answer is very clear even from my own life starting as an illegal fry cook. PPP is a real thing with little bearing on the reality of migration. Money is the same EVERYWHERE, the differentiating factor is the EASE of earning it in different countries. grandstar:No need for long debate when the internet can easily supply a credible starting point to answer the question. https://www.google.com/search?q=what+is+the+starting+salary+of+a+new+NHS+gp+doctor+in+the+UK&rlz=1C1CHBF_enUS1037US1037&oq=what+is+the+starting+salary+of+a+new+NHS+gp+doctor+in+the+UK+&gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUyBggAEEUYOTIHCAEQIRiPAjIHCAIQIRiPAtIBCTI2ODk3ajBqNKgCA7ACAfEFR3aq_Wu725k&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8 I'm sure such a salary earner can afford to save £300 per month. That is why Jakpa is a hot topic on Nairaland. brain54:So why have so many doctors migrated from Nigeria? I have 2 doctor friends with over 15 years experience, both Igbo, one a urologist, who migrated from Nigeria to practice in Saudi Arabia!!!! That should give an idea of the desperation. Salaries in Nigeria are too poor. In 2022 or so the highest paid CEO of a quoted company earned $600K TOTAL compensation and he was an Asian. Laughable, but it gives an idea of the abysmal wages in that country. It was in the news and I've since confirmed it - entry level retail bankers with 2 years experience now earn ₦800K per month...a whole £400. And then..... https://www.nairaland.com/7025067/see-someones-salary-kogi-state ![]() Good Luck to Nigerians!!!! |

adonainana:This is silly. If he publishes his salary now, the next thing is a crowd of BMC bloggers and APC hooligans will descend and castigate him for boasting. The argument here is about DOCTORS and thankfully, there is very good data about what they earn in the UK, especially since most of them work for the government owned NHS. A simple Google search led me to settle on £90K per year. Such a person can surely arrange their life to save £500 per month...yes live with a room mate, forgo frivolous spending etc...surely even with NORMAL spending habits they can save £500 per month after all expenses. Now that's ONE MILLION NAIRA per month. Tell me all salaried doctor in Nigeria with 10 years experience make that amount? Not possible. Good Luck to Nigerians. |

CoronaVirusPro:Oh please, I currently work in a multinational over here, so you can't come and tell me trash. How many doctors are needed in those multinational companies, only one in thousands. Even in the same company like Exxon Mobil and co, expatriates still earn more than the Nigerian local staff. Even staff in foreign countries earn more than the same staff same role in Nigeria. So tell me something else. Multinational workers might be earning far higher than other Nigerians doesn't mean they are not still underpaid. And also saying there are hungry people in the UK, like we have in Nigeria, is a total insult to the UK stop comparing a toy gun to an AK 47. they are not the same. Yes they are hungry people in the UK but the number of hungry people here makes those in the UK feel like billionaires. |

CoronaVirusPro:This is my real name. My wife worked for MNC...foreign oil producing companies...in Nigeria. When she transferred abroad for the same company in the same role her salary quadrupled. You're talking trash. Anyway, she always tells me regretfully how she and her colleagues in Nigeria used to laugh at Nigerians living as slaves abroad. Living is believing. Go and collect your BMC 30K and thank God for small blessings. And go charge your phone before NEPA takes light. Good Luck to Nigeria. |

IbeOkehie:You are not making sense here. Do Foteign staffs get paid same way their counterparts in UK and US are paid? How possible is that? So Chevron should be paying $100K plus to Nigeria engineers because their counterparts earn above that in the US. Hello! It’s not done like that anywhere in the world and major reasons company outsource jobs. Professionals are living good life in Nigeria. Built and own rental properties and vacation at will. Theybare not suffering. They send their kids to top notch private schools and don’t have to settle for public. What life do you think someone in the UK can afford that some Nigerians cannot afford? You generalization that we all suffering is false and baseless. When I visit UK, I am always searching for all this successful people you talk about. Always in stuffed up somewhere they call home in neighborhoods they can’t even reside in Nigeria. Same UK? Lekki phase 3? Don’t start please. |
