Tinubu’s Presidential Pardon Can Damage Investors’ Confidence – CPPE by adenigga(op): 3:41am On Oct 20, 2025
The Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise, CPPE, has said President Bola Tinubu’s recent presidential pardon can damage investors’ confidence in Nigeria.

The Centre noted that a situation whereby persons convicted of economic and financial crimes benefit from the presidential pardon raises questions about policy consistency, contract sanctity, and investment security, thereby discouraging both domestic and foreign investors.

CPPE Chief Executive Officer, Dr Muda Yusuf, raised the concern in a statement on Sunday.

According to the economic think-tank, while the prerogative of mercy is a legitimate constitutional instrument, its application to serious economic and financial offences and other criminal acts demands utmost discretion, transparency, and alignment with Nigeria’s commitments to anti-corruption campaign, drug control and the sanctity of human life.

CPPE urged the Federal Government to urgently review and rationalise the list of beneficiaries of the presidential pardon.

“Reaffirm Nigeria’s zero-tolerance position on corruption, drug trafficking, illegal mining, and financial crimes; uphold institutional integrity and ensure that justice is never compromised for convenience or political expediency; and strengthen transparency and accountability in the exercise of executive clemency to safeguard public confidence and investor trust.

“Nigeria’s aspiration to build a competitive, diversified, and globally respected economy rests on the credibility of its institutions and integrity of its governance. The perception of weak sanction regimes towards economic and financial crimes is incompatible with this goal.

“To preserve investor confidence and social stability, government must demonstrate unwavering commitment to accountability, effective consequence management and the rule of law. The credibility of Nigeria’s economic reform and investment promotion drive depends largely on it,” CPPE stated.

Recall that on October 11, 2025, the Presidency released the names of 175 persons granted clemency, including illegal miners, drug traffickers and kidnappers.

Tinubu’s decision had triggered public outrage and condemnation.

Meanwhile, a statement from the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, clarified that the list of those pardoned is subject to review.

There's no country that a president won't pardon criminals.....

If you're not okay with it, contest and win election and refuse to pardon.

Investors can't tell a president what to do......

Hehehe.

The APC government is pardoning their full squad for election and manipulation.

Nigerians are you not entertained, they should just open the whole prison for all the terrorists, armed robbers, drug Lords and kidnappers to come out too.

A very reckless and controversial government.

It is uncalled for. BAT should not undermine justice system with reckless state pardon - especially to those they have stay less than 5 years in prison when they re sentenced for life and those they have committed economic sabotage

Don't worry, the pardoned ones are still coming to give you a heavy dose of nemesis. Na then your eye go clear. Until then keep enjoying your sycophancy.

Well said. It is his supporters that are pushing him to give reckless presidential pardon.
Someone on this forum even gave a silly excuse that since it was approved by the council of state it will benefit the nation for future references
Sahara desert media, said the so called council of state approval was a sham because they never had any prior notice of the list before the meeting.

The show runner just popped in up without prior imput from them.

How do you pardon terrorists, murderers, kidnappers, human traffickers, looters, drug dealers? etc

Like the man is a terrible joke. This is not what the presidential pardon for, it is a mixture of justice and mercy to those truly deserving of it not just anybody.

For Tinubu, everything is about politics and that is why he will fail. He pays politics with everything

Terrible situation.

When the people feel those in public service and private enterprise get away with wanton corruption with a scant number ever facing the law.

When the people are under siege dying needlessly every day and watching their security operatives mowed down by bloodthirsty hoodlums.

When the people see the image of the country dragged through the mud both home and away because of narcotics trafficking.

That is exactly WHEN the government CHOOSES to offer amnesty to the few fraudsters, bandits and peddlers they have managed to lock up.

Just terrible

I agree it's a totally ill timed thing that shouldn't even happen at any time for that matter. There's no moral justification for the pardons even though I have not read the full list but the once mentioned so far leaves bad feeling in my mind.

Except Tinubu is setting the stage to release that terrorist group IPOB's leader Named Kanu which is still under trial and it is being held in DSS custody. It called Nigeria and Nigerians animals grin but it is on trial to defend itself.

If Tinubu releases it then Tinubu should kiss 2027 goodbye. He would just have dribbled himself without knowing.... @PBAT don't let anyone or group gaslight you to release that thing...let the court decide and whatever the court decides should not be later pardoned like these pardon.

It's a mockery of our judicial system. These kind of pardon or injustice are what LEDs to lawlessness....everyone should suffer for their wrong action....it is only death penalty I like to be commuted to life-in-prison.

When we should be making the penalties stringent we are pardoning those serving soft sentences for heinous crimes.

All these sponsored mushroom organizations/centers are just playing to the gallery. The Presidential pardon of convicted criminals is routine in the USA performed by all the Presidents on a regular basis. Does that damage investors' confidence in the USA? Be educated enough to understand and educate yourself accordingly instead of joining the band wagon.

Tinubu pardoned his fellow drug criminals and murderers.
Inec handed over a very sensitive position of a state to a well known criminal, what did Nigerians expect?
