Admittedly they did, but Nigeria's problems did not start with Abacha, Nigeria's problems started when our independence time rulers decided that it was better to sell raw materials to the west and import everything, including stuff we could make at home.

Even when we did start manufacturing, na to assemble stuff , with spare parts made oversease. No domestic R and D.

Abacha was still a bad leader though, but before he came in, Nigerians were already lamenting about how bad the country was.

They are actually Kanuri from Bornu state.

You also have Kanuri in Chad but I am not sure about Niger.

Edit: I had to get more details.

Kanuri's are indigenous to Niger, Chad, Cameroon, and Nigeria. They were all under the Kanem Bornu empire which covered the 4 countries.

It was colonial rule that separated them.

In the South, we also have the Egun and Yoruba in Benin republic, and you have Efik who are from Cross RiverState indigenous to Cameroon as well.
