Very good suggestion from Prof!

However, some states should be given liberty to choose which zone they will like to belong.
Another good idea, but some people want this Country to remain like this but nothing is working

Brother, no democratic leader can ever solve this worsening insecurity... Let's just be honest with ourselves.

The bottleneck and lobbying alone won't give room for practical solutions.

But, a dictator doesn't have the room or time for such nonsense Political maneuvering...! He will simply send out the full force of the military and security agencies overnight.

the goal is economic sustainability and viability, yet the structure is looking at tribal lines and similarities.

I support restructuring into economic zones and yes Aba and Port-harcourt and Onitsha have to be in the same zone. I am not sure Enugu and Ebonyi should be in that zone.

Ondo, Edo and Delta have more in common than Ondo and Lagos from an economic sustainability perspective.

I think Tinubu will make this materialize and the foundation is set already, through the regional development commissions.
I've said this thing couple of times on X, and I'll say it again.
Tinubu will play politics and do as if he doesn't have interest in this, but this is the only way to make him stronger after presidency. He's stronger within his zone (South West).
But the disadvantage of him doing it is, he'll pour more contracts and projects to his region blindly in secure tenure. SW might grow faster than we think immediately after his tenure, just like Lagos.
Mark this day, and see my prediction come to pass.

Not secretly send people to negotiate with terrorists and pretending nothing like that happened. Not labelling obvious terrorists herdsmen bandits.

The terror these guys they call bandits cause never reach to act for them. They had to secretly send negotiators.

And someone says democracy is anything good? Well, it isn't for Africa. The proofs abounds not only in this nation. But in almost all African nations.

We will not support any merging of a non-speaking Igbo community into Igbo territory. Everyone has come of age, so they can stand on their own. The Igbo nation must comprise only of all Igbo speaking communities scattered all over north central, south east and south south whether it’s grouped by the so called zones or regions.

We can keep the present zones as they are. The NASS should be scraped and each zone should have its own parliament instead (local govt chairmen) and elect a prime minister for their zone. All zones should have 100% fiscal autonomy and then pay an agreed tax percentage to the federal. The only thing to be handled at the federal level would be military, customs, immigration and foreign policy. The president will have a cabinet consisting of the 6 prime ministers representing each zone, heads of military, immigration and custom. All zines will have supreme court that will be final for all matters adjudicated in their zones. Only matters concerning human rights and other constitutional matters and federal crimes will be heard by the federal supreme court. Zonal police and the federal police for limited federal matters. Presidency will be rotated between the zones and only citizens of the particular zone will vote and present their candidate who will represent their zone.

Armaggedon:
a professor of history took shepe because you don't like his opinion. Niger Delta 'escaped' from Igbo domination but it was the Western region that lost Midwest in a resounding "no" referendum. None of the so called South South states formally left the east through a referendum. It was just bullying, rabble rousing and anti Igbo gerrymandering through military fiat. Midwest left western region through a constitutional process of referendum. This was why the professor excluded the Midwest from the west.
Bros no reasonable man including the Igbos would want to have anything in common with the Igbos. Why do you think Igbos are running away from their mainland? They don't want anything to do with the Igbos ironically. Remain homogeneous. No one wants to join u.

The states he clutched tight to were not created democratically. The states were created by Northern military dictators who sewed sates like seeds in the old Northern region to get 20 states in the old Northern region but allowed only 17 states in the two old southern regions.
There should have been more states in the two southern regions than in the old Northern region, because land mass is never used as yardstick when creating new states or local government areas in a country formed by different regions.

Former Nigerian Ambassador to Germany, Prof Akinjide Osuntokun, has called on the Federal Government to restructure the country by collapsing the current 36-state structure into viable zones.

According to him, this move will enhance cultural cohesion, promote national unity, and enable more efficient governance.

The academic said this on Tuesday in Lagos during the inaugural lecture in honour of his late brother and former Regional Minister, Oduola Osuntokun.

Osuntokun proposed a modified zonal arrangement that would group states and ethnic nationalities along lines of cultural and historical similarities.

He argued that this would dismantle the colonial-era North-South divide, which he described as an artificial and divisive construct.

In his proposal, the former envoy recommended expanding the South-West zone to include Kwara State up to Jebba, as well as the Kabba and Igala regions of present-day Kogi State.

He stated that such a realignment would foster cultural unity and reinforce regional identity.

He further suggested that the South-East zone should be reconstituted to include Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers State, and the Idoma-speaking areas of Benue State.

A new South Central zone would comprise Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, and the Ebira-speaking parts
of Kogi.

For the North, Osuntokun proposed that the North Central zone be made up of Niger, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Plateau, and Tiv areas of Benue State. Kano, on the other hand, should be merged with Jigawa, Katsina, Zamfara, Kebbi, and Sokoto to form a coherent North-West region, while the North-East would include Yobe, Gombe, Bauchi, Adamawa, Taraba, and Borno.

He said, “This suggestions are rooted in cultural consanguinity but open to negotiation but the measure will remove the Berlin Wall dividing Nigeria into North and South because the current notion of North and South is a colonial imposition and we must break away from it once and for all, this will have to be presented at national conference to break the logjam against cohesion and lack of national feeling.

“If there is an agreement, we will have six constituent states big enough to be self-sustaining, and we would then have a proper federation with a federal legislature of a House of Representatives and a part-time Senate elected by the members of state legislators on an equal basis. We should also have a parliamentary democracy.”

Osuntokun emphasised the need for appointments into federal and state agencies to be based on open competition and merit.

He cited India as a country that has progressed significantly through meritocracy and argued that Nigeria should follow suit, as no region lacks capable individuals.

“Appointments into all agencies of the state and federal governments shall be based on competition anchored on careers open to talent. This is how India got to where it is today and I dare say there is no part of Nigeria where there are no excellent people who will fall short of the measure of meritocracy,” he added.

He proposed mandatory national service for all young Nigerians, both male and female, in the military or other uniformed services for one year after graduation.

“The military, police, and all other armed and uniformed agencies or forces of government shall be recruited based on equality to eliminate the fear of dominance and domination by any ethnic group, and all young people –boys and girls – shall serve in the nation’s military for a year on graduation, as it’s done in the National Youth Service Corps.

“This is the skeleton of the constitutional organogram I am recommending to ensure stability and a safe landing when we run into turbulence,” he proposed.

That's NOT the real photograph of the great Professor Emeritus Akinjide Osuntokun (who is the former Nigerian Ambassador to Germany is now in his 80s) in your attached picture... That's his younger brother.

Second, the new South Central zone he proposed which would comprise Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, and the Ebira-speaking parts of Kogi is quite apt because the Ebiras are also in the Northern part of Edo State and the make up the vast number of the Akoko Edo folks.

Third, just like the Itsekiris who are Yoruboid with the major parent ethnic group of origin being Yoruba, the Igalas are also Yoruboid with about 65% of Yoruba derived words in use in the Igala language due to some presence of Yoruba bloodlines over the centuries with uncanny similarities in core Yoruba words and Igala words such as Ifa, Ogede, Egungun, etc. But the Igalas are a fusion of a few ethnicities such as Idomoid as well, as affirmed by the former Attah of Igalaland, Michael Ameh Oboni in 2017, so, yes, Igala is classified as a distinct ethnic group and it's debatable if they would agree to be classified as along with the larger SW Yoruba right into Kwara and Kogi Yorubas despite the very strong linguistic, cultural, and religious similarities (with Ifa divination being common to Yorubaland and Igala) between Yorubas and Igalas of Kogi and beyond.

Yoruba man speaking for Niger Deltans. Are you not tired of hating on Igbos ?
Na divide and conquer and rule to exploit tactics na. Those folks can even tell their listeners that people of the oil and gas producing areas in Imo, Abia and Anambra States are not Igbos.
They would not accept the fact that there are Igbos in Rivers, Delta, Kogi, Edo and Benue States.
