Why IMF Excluded Nigeria From Africa’s Top Growth List - Peter Obi by DiamondsAreFore(op): 7:36am On Oct 24, 2025
The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has attributed the exclusion of Nigeria from the list of Africa’s fastest-growing economies by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to indiscipline and ineffective leadership.

In a statement on Thursday, Obi said the omission of Nigeria from the list should serve as a wake-up call for the country’s leaders.

DAILY POST recalls that on October 17, the IMF excluded Nigeria from the list of Africa’s fastest-growing economies.

The global financial body listed Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Rwanda, and Uganda as the fastest-growing economies on the continent in its Regional Economic Outlook report for sub-Saharan Africa, launched in Washington, D.C.

The former Anambra State governor said the countries ranked by the IMF were not wealthier than Nigeria in natural resources but had surpassed it through discipline, effective leadership, and consistent investment in their people.

He said the countries have prioritised education, healthcare, and poverty reduction while maintaining fiscal prudence and stability.

Our economy continues to suffer from poor policy choices, corruption, and waste,” Obi lamented.

“The care of human life and happiness is the only legitimate object of good government." ( Jeffersonian Credo ).

“No nation ever grew more prosperous by taxing its citizens beyond their capacity to pay.” - former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher
Of course financial indiscipline and clueless ineffective leadership are worst combo that can never take a country through a good economic tragectory.

Meanwhile, the same IMF goaded the same failed govt with its many neck-constricting unfeasible economic policies. Imagine telling govt to remove subsidy on electricity fuel and increase taxation. God save Nigeria from the jackals feeding on it's dying carcass.

Well all can tell.

Nigerians are merely surviving by the special grace of God.

Those who are earning salaries are complaining, business men/women are complaining, entrepreneurs and investors are complaining and the millionaires and billionaires are complaining. Every living thing in Nigeria are complaining of hunger, starvation and stagnation excerpt those in government and some of their hatchet men and cronies who are getting their fair share of the national cake.

So tell me where where the IMF would have gotten a positive ranking from in terms of Nigeria.

Nigeria and Nigerians has never had it so bad.

The suffering in Nigeria since Tinubu became president is alarming.

The other day, I met a visibly broken fuel attendant who opened up about his fears.
He said he’s among the next group of workers to be laid off as fuel sales have hit rock bottom. “People no longer buy fuel like before,” he lamented, he said most car owners have abandoned their vehicles. With a mix of anger and pain, he swore he’d confront anyone who comes campaigning for Tinubu in 2027.

Yes , you need to pay more tax, whoever is in charge. Because you can't have a good treasury when only 40% of the country is paying tax , tax to gdp is less than 18% and oil is our main revenue earner..which at 1.5 million bpd can feed about 2 million people.

You also need a diversified economy and an industrialized economy

Nothing is free in life ..if we follow your way, we will end up with more loans and more debt.

Note that I did not say we should not fight corruption. I also support no politicans.

It's alarming bcoz Tinubu wasn't ready to continue with the regime of subsidy subsidy and subsidy.

Nigeria economy is stable now and the growth had started and there's no going back in spite of obi's lamentation which is pure politics.

Obi is right.
That's the instruments IMF uses to determine any country's growth. The human growth, poverty reduction and education to mention but few.

Not that the countries mentioned are richer than Nigeria , No.

Why does Tinubu keep chasing validation from the IMF and the Worldbank? He's willing to bend over backwards and implement economy-killing "reforms" just to get a tap on the back, which is not even forthcoming. Why did Nigeria suddenly pivot away from China? We had more to show in concrete projects when the loans were coming from the Chinese.

May God bless you 🙏

Same way Nigerians want everything to be free but can quickly compare Nigeria to US UK and Canada that develop their own country with tax in and out 😕

If you say this in front of many Nigerians they will see you as supporters of APC or Tinubu all because they hate to listen to the truth 📌

Those IMF policies were necessary to stop Nigeria from falling off a cliff. Had Nigeria continued to protect the naira or fund fuel subsidies, the country would have been bankrupt by now, and the Naira would have been N10000 to $1 in the parallel market. Nigerians forget that the parallel value of the Naira under the Buhari government was close to N900.

Tinubu's failure is that he has failed to transition from macroeconomic discipline to microeconomic discipline. Peter OBi is correct when he said that.
Our economy continues to suffer from poor policy choices, corruption, and waste,”. Tinubu is wasting resources on corrupt welfare solutions, building a coastal highway the country cannot afford, has failed to address electricity issues, and has been a complete failure in food and security.

My issue with Peter Obi is that he said he would not have floated the Naira immediately, when it is now seen as the best solution for Nigeria, given Argentina's stage currency flotation, which has now been seen as a failure.

Peter Obi is also politically very weak; he has no control over the political party (LP) that he represents, and his attempt to forge a coalition with Atiku has completely failed. The North will never accept him as the leading presidential candidate; hence, Peter Obi will repeat the success he had in 2023.

I have to find the time to read and study the Hon. Gov PO's seven point manifesto for success for Naija. I skimmed the AI version and saw some positive ideas.
