WAFCON 2026Q: Ihezuo, Okoronkwo Inspire Super Falcons’ Win Over Benin Republic

The Super Falcons of Nigeria defeated Benin Republic 2-0 in the first leg of their 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixture at the Stade de Kegue on Friday, reports Completesports.com.

Nigeria dominated the opening exchanges with captain Rasheedat Ajibade hitting the woodwork in the seventh minute.

The home team’s goalkeeper also made a couple of big saves to deny Justine Madugu’s side.

Chiwendu Ihezuo opened scoring for the Super Falcons in the 24th minute.

The Pachuca of Mexico striker slotted the ball into the net after she was set up by a superb pass from Deborah Abiodun.

The Super Falcons continued the pressure afterwards with the hosts standing firm at the back.

Esther Okoronkwo doubled Nigeria’s advantage late in the first half with Abiodun also providing the assist.

Nigeria dominated the second half but failed to add to their two-goal lead.

Both teams will clash in the second leg at the Moshood Abiola Sports Arena, Abeokuta next week Tuesday.

The match was played in Lome, Togo because CAF did not approve any of Benin Republic's stadiums.

These are the kinds of results we expected from the Super Eagles. Go to other countries, get away wins and show you are a big name in football on the continent. No, they will never do that. Every time, they are looking for who to turn into mathematics!

Congratulations to our darling Super Falcons! You ladies are truly showing that you in charge on the continent. By the time the next generation comes, they'll be wondering how Nigerian ladies won the trophy for 20 times grin

Useless CAF. This was what they supposed to have done to the 2 away matches for SA against Zimbabwe and Rwanda instead of playing them in SA thereby giving them unmerited advantages over others. Why can't they play it in Nigeria instead? Very corrupt organisation.

You've got to give it to the Benin gals too, though defeated they put up a good fight with flashes of attack

For 9ja gals, i wonder what Ohale is still doing in that center back, she's paid her dues and is on the decline, same as Plumptre, these legs are tired, they should be replaced
As for Esther, this gal plays more like a man, intelligent, skillful and dangerous on that left foot
Wish the striker in the U20 can be drafted to the SF, she's of age and can blend into the team easily

Congrats gals!

Stop this excuses abeg. Was it bcus South Africa played almost their games at home that stops Super Eagles from defeating Zimbabwe and Lesotho at home. If Super Eagles has won those matches will we be calculating by now

The Beninoise came close to scoring twice, first was saved by Chiamaka and second hit the bar, we need to up our game if we're to qualify for for the world Cup and retain the WAFCON trophy.
I thought the scoreline won't be less than 4 nil, but the most important thing is qualifying for the WAFCON which is already a fait accompli

He meant favoritism went to SA. He didn't compare nija to it. CAF could have used other venues than bringing it to dia home soli for away match because da own good stadium. Rorh stated this too

That is not the point, we call it fair game, there should be no room for any cheating or doubts. Even if SE did well and was at the top of the table, there is no justification for CAF to give them that advantage. If it is turned to be custom now, another team will reference that later and will get away with it. What is fair should be fair to all.

And wait sef! The decision from CAF was made right before the first match was played. What did your NFF and others in the group do by then. What of Benin that played all their match away from home.
I repeat, NFF or Super Eagles or even you don't have an excuse bcus of that. We put ourselves in the position we were not bcus of SA playing all their match at home
