To a large extent you're right. But all coups we v witnessed in Nigeria brought backwardness. It's more of ethnic coups. The rumoured one of October 1st too looked ethnically motivated. In all, coup is bad. So it's gonna cause chaos. If there's bad governance, the polls is where it's settled not via undemocratic means. Common sense things no just wan gree work for Nigeria cos the democracy should v performed better since 1999.

My thoughts exactly. If anything it might make the situation worse. Those Genarals being retired still have a lot of influence among their junior officers.

They could still initiate and direct a coup from outside.

Anyway, the Defence intelligence unit are aware of this. Hope they can do something to check that because any coup that happens in Nigeria at the moment will be damned bloody.

Another consideration is that the military has a very hierarchical system. Generals are ranked alongside course mates and when a General is appointed Service Chief his " seniors" are expected to retire

Those immediately junior to them by 1 year or 2 might suffer if tenures are extended because when the change eventually comes they might also lose out if their junior is appointed and they are forced to retire

So prolonging tenure of service chief will lead to apprehension in the ranks immediately below them

We see the same thing in politics if you have 70 year old governors or presidents those in their 60s and 50s might lose out in younger generations become militant

Imagine soludo going for second term at 66. Definitely some age groups will lose out

Only the Army COAS had not completed 2 years I believe . He has been promoted to CDS this is presumably based on seniority and this will likely delay the retirement of those senior to the new COAS who may move to defence headquarters
