There was a mild drama at the 90th birthday of Baba Ijebu yesterday between the Alaafin of Oyo and The Ooni of Ife. It seems both of them have beef with each other as the Ooni of Ife passed the microphone to the Alaafin of Oyo with his left hand. In response the Alaafin instructed his aide to wrap the mic with handkerchief before receiving it. It's all about superiority between both of them. However, the Ooni was made to speak first , before the Alaafin. This has been playing out on most occasions that both parties are present. I believe the Ooni is left handed and possibly got lost in the moment and went on pure instinct. He should have apologized though. The Alaafin reaction is normal as it is disrespectful in yoruba culture to hand anything to anyone with the left hand. In yoruba culture that is the hand you use to clean your yansh. Their problem! However my issue with both is I don’t believe as custodians of culture and tradition a king especially kings as senior as those two should speak English in public. This is very unnecessary. Handing the mic to Alaafin wasn't a disrespect by the Ooni. The man is left-handed and feels more comfortable handling things with his left hand. He even writes with his left hand. Also, I see the action of the Alaafin as a mere precaution. I have a colleague who doesn't even handle a mic during official events. I believe this isn't the first time the Alaafin will be wrapping a mic before using it. That's why his aide was there ready with the handkerchief.
