Every device should be able to stand on longevity
StellaGirlie:
One thing I’ve noticed about phone users especially in Nigeria is that everyone has a story about how their phone “used to be perfect” until one day, it just started misbehaving. Overheating. Sudden battery drain. Sluggish performance. Or the classic, a cracked screen that costs almost as much as the phone itself.
Every brand claims durability, but when you strip away the marketing, how many truly last beyond the first year without visible decline? That’s what I’ve been thinking about lately and not repairs this time, but longevity. Why do some phones age gracefully, while others start giving attitude after just a few months?

Let’s start with the big names.
iPhones are often praised for lasting several years, but that usually comes at a cost which is expensive repairs and, updates that sometimes make older models feel slower. Samsung has the premium build and display quality, but their flagship screens and parts can be ridiculously expensive to replace, and midrange models don’t always share the same durability.
Then you have the value-driven players like Infinix, Tecno, realme, Redmi, and OPPO... brands that focus on affordability and practical specs. Some people say they last just as long, others say they age faster because of software optimization and component quality. But in Nigeria’s conditions constant heat, unstable electricity, frequent charging, and dusty environments, these “budget” phones often surprise you. Some users have used a Tecno or Redmi for 3 years with minimal issues, while others have seen high-end devices give up earlier.

So maybe the real question isn’t “which brand is better,” but what makes a phone truly last?
Is it the build quality? The software updates? The way the owner uses and maintains it? Or could it be that modern smartphones are designed with an invisible expiry date...? That subtle point where performance starts to decline just enough to make you consider upgrading?

I’m curious to hear from real users, not marketers:
👉 Which phone brand has stood the test of time for you?
👉 Which one looked promising at first but didn’t age well?
👉 And in your experience, does paying more actually guarantee a longer-lasting phone or is it just hype?
Let’s be honest and share real experiences. Because in today’s phone market, durability might just be the biggest illusion we’ve all learned to accept.

Software updates kill older phones faster than anything else

My first iPhone lasted long enough to see my next relationship end 💀

Omo, Naija heat alone can finish any phone if you’re not careful 😂

Every phone is perfect until NEPA strikes and you overcharge am 😭

I think the real enemy is “system update” 😅 after that, your phone go start misbehaving

Let me introduce you to Nokia G10. It falls at least thrice a month and nothing happens to the device. Average distance of 4 feet.

Tecno definitely does, too much history with it
