I have been observing the recent wave of deceptive and manipulative tactics employed by the federal government and its allies. These range from outright denial of ongoing atrocities to carefully orchestrated social media campaigns portraying sudden acts of harmony such as Muslim northerners showing kindness to their so-called Christian neighbours, Fulani herdsmen engaging positively with farmers, and even inter-religious couples participating in trending videos.

Make no mistake these are deliberate, coordinated efforts by the government and the Islamic Council of Nigeria to project a false image of peace and unity to the international community while concealing the realities on the ground.

Amid growing attempts to question or downplay the suffering of Christians in Nigeria whether through misinformation or religious deception, I have decided to compile a factual and chronological record of Christian massacres across the country. Each event will be documented with reliable sources, and while some dates may shift as more information surfaces, every update will include clear citations.

For this first post, I will begin with the most detailed and verified records from Benue State, as documented by the state government itself.

5. July 5, 2013. 20 people were killed in a “conflict” between Tiv farmers & herdsmen at Nzorov,Guma LGA, Benue state.

6. July 31 2013 herdsmen invade 2 villages in Agatu LGA killing 8 villagers allegedly in retaliation for the killing of 112 cows.

7. November 7, 2013. Attackers strike at Ikpele & Okpopolo communities killing 7 and displacing over 6000 inhabitants.

8. Nov 9, 2013. 36 locals killed and 7 villages overrun in an attack by herdsmen on locals in Agatu LGA.

9. Nov 20, 2013. Attack on communities in Guma LGA, killing 22 locals and destroying properties worth millions of naira.

10. Jan 20 2014. Gunmen attack Agatu LGA, killing 5 soldiers and 7 civilians.

11. Jan 20, 2014. Attack on Adeke village. 3 dead.

12. 20-21 Feb 2014. Herdsmen attack Gwer West LGA. 35 persons killed. 80,000 displaced. 6 Council Wards Sacked.

13. Feb 24, 2014. Attack on a Tiv community along Naka road, Makurdi, killing 8 people.

14. March 6, 2014. 30 killed in Kwande, Katsina/Ala and Logo LGAs by attackers dressed in military uniforms. 6 villages sacked.

15. March 12, 2014. Raid on Ukpam village of Mbabaai in Guma LGA. 28 persons killed. Yam barns and farms burnt.

16. March 10, 2014. Former Governor Suswam’s convoy attacked by herdsmen at Umenger. He and convoy manage an escape.

17. March 12, 2014. Herdsmen attack Suswam’s village in Logo LGA. 22 slaughtered. Entire village sacked.

18. March 23, 2014. 25 killed and over 50 injured by herdsmen said to be bearing sophisticated weapons in Gbajimba, Guma LGA.

19. March 25, 2014. Police recover 7 corpses following an attack on Agena village by Herdsmen.

30. May 11, 2015. Ikyoawen community in Turan Kwande LGA invaded by herdsmen. 5 persons killed & 8 others wounded.

31. May 24, 2015. 100 killed in an attack by herdsmen in villages &refugee camps at Ukura, Gafa, Per and Tse-Gusa, Logo LGA.

32. July 7, 2015. 1 local killed and several others injured following an attack on mourners in Imande Bebeshi in Kwande LGA.

33. November 5, 2015. 12 persons killed, 25 others injured in Buruku LGA following an attack by suspected herdsmen.

34. Feb 8, 2016. 10 killed and over 300 displaced in clash between herdsmen and farmers at Tor-Anyiin and Tor-Ataan in Buruku LGA.

35. Feb 21-24, 2016. Over 500 locals killed and 7000 displaced in an attack on Agatu LGA by fulani herdsmen. Over 7 villages razed.

36. March 9, 2016. 8 residents killed by herdsmen in attacks on Ngorukgan, Tse Chia, Deghkia and Nhumbe in Logo LGA.

37. March 11, 2016. Attack on Convoy of Senator David Mark by suspected herdsmen in Agatu LGA. No casualty recorded.

38. March 13, 2016. 6 people including an APC youth leader killed by herdsmen in an attack on Tarka LGA.

39. February 29, 2016 11 killed in Edugbeho Agatu LG including a police inspector.

40. March 10, 2016 Two killed in attack on Obagaji Agatu.

41. March 5, 2016 Houses burnt in Agatu. Security forces prevented killings.

42. January 24, 2017: 15 persons were killed by rampaging Fulani herdsmen, who attacked farmers in Ipiga village in Ohimini Local Government Area of Benue State.

43. March 2, 2017: No fewer than 10 persons were killed in a renewed hostility between herdsmen and farmers in Mbahimin community, Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State.

44. March 11, 2017: Seven people were killed when herdsmen attacked a Tiv community, Mkgovur village in Buruku local government area of Benue State.

45. May 8: Three persons were confirmed killed by herdsmen in Tse-Akaa village, Ugondo Mbamar District of Logo Local Government Area of Benue State.

46. May 13, 2017: Less than one week after many people were killed by herdsmen in three communities of Logo Local Government Area of Benue State, armed herders struck again on May 13 killing eight more people.

Boko Haram’s specific targeting of Christians and symbols of the Christian faith can be seen in the following illustrations:



On 6 May 2020, Boko Haram attacked Debiro, Dakwiama and Tarfa communities of Biu LGA in Borno State, burnt two EYN churches, razed down the two villages, killing Mr Audu Bata and some houses in Tarfa.[19]

On 21 February 2020, Garkida community, the birthplace of the EYN movement, was attacked by Boko Haram. The first EYN Church was built here. Two other Churches Anglican and Living Faith were also burnt. The EYN Brethren College of Health Technology, EYN Rural Health Department and its vehicles, prominent Christian houses and shops were looted and burnt. Mr Emmanuel Bitrus Tarfa was abducted. [20]

On 2 February 2020, Boko Haram attacked Leho community of Askira/Uba LGA of Borno State again. All three EYN Churches were burnt, EYN Leho 1, Leho 2 and Leho Bakin Rijiya. [21]

On 2 February 2020, Boko Haram attacked Michika Community of Adamawa State and abducted Rev Lawan Andimi the EYN District Church Secretary.[22]

On 2 January 2020, Boko Haram kidnapped and later beheaded the EYN District Church Council leader and CAN Chairman of Minchika LGA in Adamawa State.[23]
29 December 2019, Mandaragirau community of Biu in the LGA of Borno State was attacked. 18 Christians were abducted, the oldest was a 42-year-old woman, the youngest was a three year old child. The Church building and foodstuff were destroyed as well as the primary school. [24]

On Christmas Eve 2019, Boko Haram jihadists driving trucks and motorcycles stormed into Kwarangulum near the town of Chibok in Borno, firing at residents, looting all they could and burning their homes.[25]

On 22 December 2019, in Borno state, Boko Haram jihadists attacked two passenger buses and released the Muslim passengers. They then held back the Christians, separating the men and women. A pastor from Deeper Life Bible Church and two other men were killed on the spot, while the pastor’s relative and two humanitarian workers were abducted.[26]



Armed Fulani herdsmen are also attacking Christians, on their holy days and in their holy places as the following illustrations show:

Attacks on four churches in Kwara State on New Year’s Day 2018 with many injured, rapes committed and properties destroyed by local Muslims;

The killing of two priests and 17 others during a service at St Ignatius’ Church, in Mbalom, Benue State on 24 April 2018 by armed Fulani herdsmen;
Attacks in Adamawa State on Christmas Eve (24 December 2017) by suspected Muslim Herdsmen (1 death, 4 injuries).[27]

500 churches have been destroyed in Benue State since 2011, one of the States worst hit by the conflict. In Taraba State, more than 100 churches were destroyed by Fulani herders in 2014 and over 200 abandoned out of fear of further attacks. Approximately 65% of local churches in Wukari were burnt and the entire population displaced.[28]

On 31 December 2011, Boko Haram issued an ultimatum asking Christians to leave the North and go the South. By midnight, they were going from house to house to search out Christians by name for elimination.

We urge the FAC to also consider the 2019 Bishop of Truro’s Independent Review for the British Foreign Secretary on persecuted Christians globally. It highlighted Nigeria as a focus country and examined the killing of two priests and 17 others during a service at St Ignatius’ Church, Mbalom, in Nigeria’s ‘Middle Belt’ on 24 April 2018. The Bishop assessed that the evidence suggested a religious motive lay, at least in part, behind this notorious event.[31] Additionally, Open Door’s World Watch Research Unit has a series of in-depth studies on four Nigerian states (Taraba, Benue, Southern Kaduna, Nasarawa) that show very clearly how Christians have been singled out for their religion.[32]

Our investigation reveals that the gunmen were on a rampage of killing and destruction for more than 48 hours. They moved from one village to another. The toll marked a sharp rise from the initial figure reported by the army Sunday evening of just 16 dead in a region plagued for several years by religious and ethnic tensions.

"As many as 113 persons have been confirmed killed as Saturday hostilities persisted to [the] early hours of Monday morning," Monday Kassah, head of the local government in Bokkos, Plateau State, told AFP.

Military gangs, locally called "bandits," launched "well-coordinated" attacks in "not fewer than 20 different communities" and torched houses too, Kassah said.

"We found more than 300 wounded people" who were transferred to hospitals in Bokkos, Jos and Barkin Ladi, he said.

A provisional toll by the local Red Cross reported 104 deaths in 18 villages in the Bokkos region.

At least 50 people were also reported dead in several villages in the Barkin Ladi area, according to Dickson Chollom, a member of the state parliament.

He condemned the attacks and called on the security forces to act swiftly.

"We will not succumb to the tactics of these merchants of death. We are united in our pursuit of justice and lasting peace," Chollom said.

Bro they are not silent. I know someone in the NUJ and they have been directed to curb the reports on what is going on in the middle belt, same with NIgerian news agency.

The people in those regions now only share their experience with independent fact finders from the international community and organisations like Amnesty international, even powerful organisations like Al-Jazerra are also involved in suppressing this information while media houses like CNN are against reporting this as a religious crisis because of the recent political dynamic in the United States (the perception that Republican = Christians, and CNN are a strong arm of the democratic media in the United States)

Just read through those reports, the people in the middle belt are very vocal but our NUJ have been directed to suppress the information.

Even NEMA have been directed to reduce the number of Christian casualties in Nigeria, to get the real numbers you must look at reports from the Red Cross and Amnensty. It's a shame what Nigeria has become.

2.2.1. KILLINGS BY FULANI HERDERS
The five states in the South-East, particularly Enugu and Ebonyi states, have been the sites of several clashes
between farmers and Fulani herders over grazing lands.
Amnesty International’s research shows that scores of persons were killed when Fulani herders invaded the
Ukpabi Nimbo community in Uzo-Uwani LGA of Enugu state on 25 April 2016 and displacing the residents.218
Amnesty International research found that between 2019 and 2023, an unspecified number of people were killed by herdsmen in Enugu state, in communities such as Eha Amufu, Emene, 9th Mile Corner, Amagunze in
Nkanu East, Oji River, Nimbo Nsukka, Igboeze North/South, and Awgu.
