If there is a tax on import but the tax is not applied on same product produced locally, what will the effect of the tax be?

I think the best thing to do is to put embargo on fuel importation to protect the naira. Place outright priority on local refining and determine a viable regulatory framework for Petroleum products pricing in the country. In that case, Dangote or any other player in the downstream will not take advantage of Nigerians.

do you really understand the implication? It is a good move as this would force many importers to buy products from Dangote or other local refineries. We need to protect indigenous refineries. This will create jobs and reduce pressure on forex.

You cannot expect people not to complain about government's income and expenditure when they have little of no input and little to no benefit.

Ad a classic example.
Yesterday we saw pictures of a dreadful highway in the Edo/Delta axis.

Now if the government is sensitive to acknowledge this and tie them to new taxes or tariff and is seen to move on these issues then people will not complain.

But to raise taxes just to throw it into some opaque budget no one is monitoring for expenditure the public doesn't control will be resisted.

To whom much is given much is expected and this government should realize that the more it strains the people the more they will ask questions.

I don't know how we see government in this part of the world. They are not gods that are beyond question. Gods are not elected from amongst men. They are merely first amongst equals and they should answer to the people who send them there to represent them.

In saner societies issues of taxation are bitterly debated by government and the people's representatives on the other hand.

Government doesn't just collect money from the people without serious explanations as to how and why.

If he's doing all these now just imagine what he would do in his second tenure.



The common man should better start preparing to eat grass, these people have come to finish Nigerians.

This comes with mixed feelings. Such a tax should not be implemented immediately unless Dangote can truly produce enough to handle our daily needs. Otherwise I have to consider my support for this govt. We can't build refinery in a day or a year. There should be a time frame so investors can set up local refineries. This will be more burden.

At this point, this govt in gonna wake our dead grand-parents in order to tax them too!
