Chinese President Xi Jinping met with U.S. President Donald Trump in South Korea on the 30th and stated, “China and the United States should become partners and friends.” The two leaders held talks at Naraemaru, a meeting venue within the Air Force base at Gimhae International Airport in Busan, on the sidelines of the APEC summit. This marked the first time the two leaders sat down face-to-face in 6 years and 4 months.

Xi Jinping noted, “As China and the United States have different national circumstances, differences are inevitable, and as the world’s two major economies, occasional friction is also very normal.” He added, “In the face of storms and challenges, President Trump and I, as ‘helmsmen,’ must steer the direction correctly and manage the situation well so that the large ship of Sino-U.S. relations can sail steadily.”

Xi Jinping further stated, “China’s development and revival can coexist with the ‘Make America Great Again (MAGA)’ vision and are not contradictory,” emphasizing, “The two countries can completely help each other achieve success and prosper together.” He added, “China and the United States should become partners and friends, which is a lesson of history and a practical necessity,” expressing his hope to “work with President Trump to lay a stable foundation for Sino-U.S. relations and create a favorable environment for the development of both countries.”

The two leaders also exchanged views on international issues. Xi Jinping said, “President Trump contributed to the Gaza ceasefire agreement and in Malaysia, brokered an agreement related to the Thai-Cambodian border,” praising, “President Trump is sincere about world peace and has a strong interest in major global issues.” He added, “China has also played a role in resolving the border issue between Cambodia and Thailand,” stating, “As major global powers, both China and the United States bear great responsibilities for global affairs.” He concluded, “I hope today’s discussions will lead to positive outcomes for issues important to both countries and the world.”
