The recent government memo proposes a 15% tariff on fuel imports, claiming it will deliver "national energy security" and "market stabilisation."

Let's examine these generous fictions.

"This Will Reinforce Energy Security"
Apparently, energy security now means making fuel scarce and expensive. The Dangote Refinery produces far below Nigeria's 66-million-litre daily demand, yet the solution is to tax the imports that actually keep vehicles running? Brilliant. Nothing says "security" like eliminating your backup supply before your primary source works.

"Imports Undercut Local Production"
Translation: our $20 billion refinery can't compete with imported fuel, so instead of asking why, let's just ban the competition. Global refineries face import competition daily without requiring their governments to kneecap rivals. But Nigerian consumers should pay premium prices to protect a facility that promised efficiency but delivered excuses.

"The Tariff Will Improve Affordability"
This might be the memo's boldest lie. A 15% duty adds ₦95–₦100 per litre, which becomes ₦140–₦165 after transport, storage, and margins. Food costs rise. Transport fares jump. Businesses close.
But sure, let's call economic strangulation "affordability." Nigerians have already survived subsidy removal and currency collapse; why not add extortion to the list?

"This Serves Public Interest"
Twenty marketers sell Dangote fuel ₦100–₦120 above import prices—no competition, no consequence. The same refinery demanding protection from imports quietly imports its own blending components. The hypocrisy is remarkable: imports are dangerous unless we're doing the importing.
This isn't public interest. It's a protection racket with legislative approval.

The Bottom Line
Nigeria is being asked to accept monopoly pricing, supply uncertainty, and economic hardship, all to protect a refinery that can't deliver on its promises. True reform would allow competition to expose inefficiency, not reward it with tariffs.

If this passes, remember: it wasn't policy. It was a heist, and the government held the door open.

By January when people start paying taxes, they’ll see the reality of living in a country where you pay taxes like those who live abroad, but get nothing in return.

Already, many Nigerians who drive cars and use generators have been spending up to N1 million extra monthly since 2023, what has government done for them? Is it better healthcare, better security, better transportation networks, or what? Just minimal changes while corrupt politicians upgraded their wasteful lifestyles.

I feel this a Good news for the economy, bad news for fuel importers.

We have Dangote refinery which has even expanded to become the world's largest refinery. Why are we still importing fuel when we have local refinery ? BUA is almost completing his own too.. this will make our Naira stronger against the dollars while we also earn more of foreign exchange by exporting the products abroad which Dangote has already started exporting to the United States.

The fuel importers can also avoid this fuel import Tax by building local refinery here to compete against Dangote thereby creating a competitive market environment which will eventually crash the price of the products totally

Something fishy going on. How come they all contented with going for a market where petrol sells for around N1,000 a opposed to other markets where it sells for as high as N1,800. Is adamawa or taraba closer to Lagos than Abidjan or Togo?

No one forced him to go and build refinery. If his production cost cannot fall below imported fuels then why should we have to pay for that? Where is the free market economy this government claims to pursue when it is putting in place policies to stifle competition?
It is madness that a refinery accesses crude locally, refines locally but its products are more expensive than imported varieties. The lies that imported fuel is of lesser quality is just that, cheap lies.

I understand anyway. He is a business man and will always want to do what is for the best of his business. But I'll leave you with something to ponder.

What if other countries put same tariff on fuel imported to their countries from Nigeria, will Nigeria like tariff war?
Second, when did dangote refinery becomes government own? dis one they are saying our $20 billion refinery

Putting Tariff on Imported products when u don't have enough local production to cater for your PMS needs is just fooolishness .

When effect of the tariff kicks in and people want to protest the resultant increase in PMS cost, they will ban protest, pay influencers to twist facts on its head to gaslight and then label you enemy of Nigeria

The person to demand something in return for your taxes is you. If Sowore requests 1mln man march to NASS for good governance, I'm sure you'll use that Saturday to be watchhing Netflix.

Nigeria's are not willing to do what it takes.

Mind you i'm not advocating for riots or looting o. Just 1,000,000 people going to occupy NASS and Aso Rock and demanding for good governance, reduction in estacode, reduction is wasteful spending, reduction in corruption, reduction in using our money to buy Landcruisers etc will shake the establishment to their core. I love Tinubu so much but if this tax can work with changes then he is the best .
But if tax works without change in the environment society or anything hmmmm also rock go hot oo 😢

You talk as if majority of your brain has leaked out of your ears. The CBN under Emiefele sold dollars at a very cheap rate to Dangote. The NNPC too reportedly provided funds though less than 5% of the total cost of the project.

Will government be willing to sell dollars cheaply across board to anyone willing to build a refinery? Or is this a package only Dangote enjoyed?

A government that cannot account for the billions of dollars it borrowed to fix Kaduna and Port Harcourt refineries has no business demanding Nigerians pay 15% on imported fuel. That is wickedness.

A bag of cement costs 3500 in China but yet that same bag costs 9500 here in Nigeria. What possibly justifies this? And the government wants to put us at the mercy of this company?

Discouraging fuel imports is a good development. It will give investors confidence to build refineries. BUA and others who are already building a Refinery will try to complete their project ASAP.

Nigerians will benefit from the availability of multiple refining facilities in Nigeria.

I wonder who paid you for this hatchet job and how much your entire compensation was. How do the hell does Nigeria consume 66 million litres per day?

Do you not know that the fuel importers are the ones ruining the economy by slurping up all the dollars and driving demand up so high that the dollar value has become both exaggerated and ridiculous. So we should continue with that status quo because you're scared of a monopoly? Is there any law that prohibits importers from forming syndicates and building local modular refineries to stop the runaway cost of the dollar, compete with Dangote and stabilise the economy? Do you honestly believe that these importers are scared of Dangote or that they are not billionaires themselves? So we should continue with the trend of drilling crude, exporting it and then re-importing with scarce dollars? I don't understand how you people think sometimes.

The recent government approved 15% tariff on fuel imports, to guarantee national energy security and market stabilization:
1. To encourages and protect those companies that produces the products local.
2. The country currency will strengthen.
3. Create more jobs for its populace.
4. Foreign Direct Investments will increase to mention a few

Do you know what Naira would be to dollar by now without Dangote refinery. Oil imports accounts for 80% of Forex requirement in CBN.
He took a risk constructing the refinery, he would have been ruined if it failed.
The importers you are supporting have no viable investment in the oil sector, it's just cash-in cash-out for them, they don't care if the economy collapses as long as they make their own fast money.

Your argument is flawed and reads like beer parlour talking points. How can you fairly compare a company refining locally in Nigeria with those importing finished products from abroad? What if the suppliers from abroad are deliberately selling imported goods at lower prices just to destroy your local industries?

Take China as an example: its steel producers often sell below market value to drive out competition. Many of these companies are state-owned and focus more on creating jobs for their people than on generating profits, with the government subsidizing production. That’s why most countries have implemented tariffs to protect their local industries.

If we continue with this mindset, no one will invest in manufacturing in Nigeria. This is why we don't have textile or steel industry in Nigeria. Building a steel plant or textile factory requires a level playing field, and that’s impossible without some trade protection. Even the beverage sector in Nigeria benefits from import duties designed to help it survive.

If marketers want a share of the market, they should establish refineries locally, develop the workforce, pay taxes, and create jobs.

Also, comparing cement prices in China and Nigeria doesn’t make sense—the scale is vastly different. China produced about 1.83 billion tonnes last year, while Nigeria produced only 0.065 billion tonnes, less than 4% of China’s output. Compare PMS and cement prices in Nigeria with other African countries.

The government is supposed to support companies that want to establish industries in Nigeria. That is what most countries do. You provide tax breaks, financial support, and make procurement and foreign exchange processes easier. This is a government’s responsibility because these companies will create jobs, build a skilled workforce, and pay taxes for decades. For example, the Canadian federal and provincial governments have committed billions in funding and incentives to attract companies to set up electric vehicle manufacturing and supply chains.
Here are a few examples:
* Stellantis: The federal and Ontario governments agreed to provide up to $15 billion in production subsidies over 10 years.
* Volkswagen: The federal and Ontario governments pledged up to $13.2 billion in production subsidies and a $700 million upfront capital grant.
* Honda: Receiving $2.5 billion in federal tax credits and another $2.5 billion from the Ontario government.
* Northvolt: Supported with up to $4.4 billion in federal funding and $2.9 billion in financing from Quebec.
* General Motors/POSCO: Funded by $147 million from the federal government and $152 million from Quebec.

Nigeria should take a similar approach and give maximum support to any company that wants to establish industries here

Federal government have given Dangote an Opportunity to expand his market in Nigeria, I hope he won't fvck it up with excessive greed.

As long as Dangote make his products a lot cheaper than these importers it is just a matter of time before he run them out of business, even If Dangote fvck up tomorrow and try to take advantage Federal government can also remove the 15% import duty and encourage import to compete with Dangote.
