What people don't realize is that the greater the probability that a coup will succeed if executed, the greater the probability that it will leak out before the execution date.

You need to have a good number of officers in strategic places for it to succeed but conversely as you co-opt more of them into the coup the greater the probability that one of them will leak the plan to the authorities. You can't stage a successful coup with 5 officers. At least not in this day and age.

* Also, nothing stops Russia from being involved in a poorly planned coup. They are far from infallible.

I think you are right.

Someone who once served in the army told me OBJ hacked it; OBJ during his tenure did major shake-up that has made it quite diffcult for any attempted coup to succeed in Nigeria.

He claimed OBJ being an ex -military man made sure some of the strategic army units that are required to overrun a government are far away from the seat of power. He said some of the major army units like the infantry corps, ordinance , signals, etc are spread apart. So successful coordination of a coup is very very difficult without a third ear hearing about the coup plan.

Also, the fact that most coup always involve not so senior officers like Major, Lt. Colonel, Colonel, etc while senior officers like Generals, Major Generals, Brigadier Generals will either be arrested or killed would always make the senior officer's side with the civilian government. No senior officer wants to either get killed, jailed or have to now start saluting his junior because they successfully carried out a coup.

He said Nigeria is a very big country and not as small as countries like Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, etc where with few officers u can take control of the whole country. You will face serious resistance from whatever command of the military that is not under your control, and the coup will fail in an instant.

Back then Dodan Barracks and Ikeja Cantonment were inordinately significant. Military presence was subsequently decentralized and strategic power was taken away from a single ethnic cohort. For a coup to succeed now i think you need a good number of senior officers to be on board and/or the closest officers to the presidency to be part of the plot.

You are right, only palace coup can can stand the slightest chance of success. Even that one will require senior officers who are very very close to the presidency.

I think they took the right decision canceling the independence parade for October 1st.
