Traditional African wedding rituals don't have to be about hurting anyone, for instance, in my tribe, despite the bride price, there are some traditional rituals that still have to be performed to solidify the union. SpencerForbes: |

Stay humble in your marriage and make it work. Be a good wife, and when the kid(s) come, be a good mother too. Congrats! |

Samantha125:Here In Nigeria, traditional customs remain vibrant, adapting to modern times while retaining their essence. The Igbo people, for instance, still observe significant rituals like the "wine carrying ceremony" and "knocking ceremony", which secure formal blessings from the parents of the couple. The Yoruba community also preserves its traditions, evident in their customary greetings and marriage practices. Interestingly, Yoruba weddings tend to be relatively less costly. The Hausa traditions, known for their steadfastness to religion and traditions. As long as it is related to their religion, they are good with it. Generally marriages in Nigeria follow a structured pattern: - Introduction: The groom's family visits the bride's family to express interest, involving initial rites and receiving a list of required items. - Provision of Items: Fulfillment of the listed items is expected; Igbo lists can be notably comprehensive 😂 sometimes and can only be simplified with the bride’s parental approval or circumstances like pregnancy. - Main Event: The celebration rich with activities unique to various ethnic groups, aiming to invoke parental blessings. So Nigeria traditional marriage still follows the old ways and that’s something we’re proud of. 😊 🚶♂️ |

pansophist:For me. Personally, for me—and likewise for any man who is QUALITY—money from a woman is not needed. I don’t need her status. I don’t need anything material. A person who is 40 years old and hasn’t been married must be extremely educated. For example, some kind of doctor + specialist in neurosurgery. At the very top of her field. Or some entrepreneur who has dedicated her life to business and now wants to fulfill herself on a family level. I need proof that she is high-quality and worth it. That she hasn’t gone from man to man, spending the best years of her life satisfying her selfish needs, and then, after turning 40+, decided to retire and settle down. To find a fool she can ride. Also: Divorced women are out of the question. They didn’t get divorced by accident. Especially divorced women with children. I will not raise someone else’s children—absolutely not. All of the above does not apply to widows. In that case, the children are not a problem because those children have no living father, and she is not alone by choice. |

goran3310:Good points. If you want a child, don’t you think a woman in her 40’s poses significant challenge for child bearing ? |

goran3310:Lol.. If you ever marry a woman in her 40s, you want a woman who is high quality. The question is, are you high quality enough for her to find you desirable? You don't need her money, but looking for someone at the peak of her career. In other words, you are looking for a woman who will stand as the perfect guarantor if you ever need a loan from a bank. The honest truth is, no woman in her 40s who is at the peak of her career would want to settle for less. So, don't think so highly of yourself to think you are the prize. Go for your 20 year olds and widows with hundreds of body counts, and let single old cargos live in peace. If only you know what most widows do in the dark... |

With the way my tribal traditional wedding customs are a process, I'm even lazy to start typing... We have two weddings, one at the bride's homestead on Saturdays and the other at the groom's homestead on Sundays. I don't even want to talk about introductions and dowry negotiations. You're not allowed to drive or go anywhere far from home on the week of your wedding, you have to be taken to the gravesides of those of your loved ones who are no more to bid them farewell, cows have to be slaughtered, the family has to fetch a royal staff from the local royal house and bring part of the meat and traditional beer or money as offering to the royal house afterwards, the wedding celebrants then have to be taken to the same royal house to have their union blessed by the local chief, after which the family can then return the royal staff back to the royal house... When the wedding celebration is done, the groom and his family would leave, then the bride's married elders will then have a sit down talk with her and give her instructions on how to be a good wife and a daughter in-law, after they're done, they'll start singing a traditional farewell wedding song as they escort her to the car that'll be taking her to her in-laws house... And if you have older siblings who are not yet married, they must immediately excuse themselves from the family house and not be around the house to see you as you leave... You get accompanied by at least two aunts and a maid of honour. When you get to your in-laws house, you have to stay in a room allocated for you and you're not allowed to have any contact with your husband until all the remaining rituals have been performed the following day... Your aunts and maid of honour will be the ones cooking for you and looking after you until you're officially handed over to your in-laws. And if you already have children, their first names will also be changed. SpencerForbes: |

Samantha125:Wow 😮! I’m gonna dig deeper into it I guess. Your customs seem more structured compared to what we're used to. From what I've seen, some of our ceremonies actually involve goats instead of cows, and folks buy things for departed parents without necessarily stopping by their gravesite. Still, they're beautiful traditions! Hoping I get to experience South African traditions someday ![]() 🚶♂️ |
