Good evening guys Hope your day went well. I have this very dicey more or less a Catch 22 question about the subject of divorce. Mark 10:1-12 narrates an event in which dome Pharisees hoping to trap Jesus asked him a question based on Divorce. Jesus'answer to them was also kinda confusing. His response was that Moses gave the condition for divorce because of the Hardness of the heart between the people involved and that it wasn't God's original plan for married couples who are now one to separate. Later the Disciples asked Him the same question again for clarity. His response is the "bone" that must be contended with. The answer Jesus gave was anyone who marries a divorcee has committed the sin of Adultery. What I'm curious to know is does it mean that a divorcee cannot remarry after he or she had divorced their spouse? I'll be very happy and appreciate it if a Lawyer comments on this post. I don't know of anyone or I'd have called their attention to this post. A Christian Lawyer will be most welcome because he or she will answer this question from the angle of the Word of God. Thanks I and the people who'll read this post await your wise response. |

AngelahFlo:Your question is a little confusing and I do not have clear way of handling it. However, there are many things that go on with marriage and before marriage and in is quite an intricate web which catches wrongdoers in different and dynamic punishing ways And the number 1 is that couples who do not obey God and flee fornication, get punished in many ways if and when they marry. https://www.nairaland.com/8080384/polygamy-gods-punishment-fornication-deut#129757291 And since bad marriage is a punishment for fornication, a person who seeks to escape punishment by divorce is prima facie guilty of a worser crime of adultery. So can a divorcee remarry? Only if he broke no Law. |

Dtruthspeaker:This is deep and like I said earlier, it's a catch 22 scenario. Jesus himself didn't give the Pharisees a clear answer in the account of Mark 10:1-12 but His words to His disciples was a divorcee shouldn't marry as that would be Adultery. If we should go by what the Lord Jesus says then two things are to be adhered to: 1 Married couples should do all they can to make their marriage work 2. Avoid Divorce at all cost and if they do Divorce; to stay off marriage altogether. Like i said it's a catch 22. Thanks for your contribution. I await the input of a lawyer especially a Christian Lawyer on this dicey issue. |

AngelahFlo:I'm a Lawyer and I have pointed out that the Laws of marriage even start from pre marriage which is where The Law against fornication comes in. And it is based on this that I was able to explain and prove why the forbidden fruit is sex for Adam male and female were punished for fornication aka sex before marriage. https://www.nairaland.com/7947204/truly-forbidden-fruit-sex#127583663 https://www.nairaland.com/8179397/fornication-first-sin All these Laws and effects are already at play even before marriage is done |

Dtruthspeaker:Thanks for your apt contribution. Now since it's not hinted at explicitly in the Bible, there's no way I can contest your argument about fornication being the first sin that got our first parents ousted from the garden neither will I pursue that line of thought cos I believe it's encapsulated for a reason. What I do know for certain was they were naked and not ashamed. Perhaps it was when they ate the fruit that theit eyes were opened and they become more aware of baser desires that they never knew was there. It's just me rambling but I won't pursue this line of argument. Come to think of it, the reason for divorce borders on unfaithfulness on the part of the partner involved. According to your first post, you said a divorcee can marry if he or she didn't break the law? Enlighten me some more. Just curious. I thought divorce was supposed to involve two parties. If the person that caused the motion for divorce was the unfaithful one does it mean the other party can remarry while the other one can't remarry? Wow this is deep. I await your response on this Sir. |

AngelahFlo:Hmmm! This is where it gets a little and a lot complicated for there are many Laws to abide by before, a party can remarry eg. (He who comes to equity must come with clean hands. Psalm 24:3/Psalm 51:10). You must not be complicit in orchestrating a divorce nor did you prevent or frustrate reconciliation. The circumstance must show complete innocence in that it is not that you put away your partner to acquire the new one. Like your first marriage the consent of God needs to be sought and obtained. The bottom line is Innocency and God's approval are the grounds of remarriage |

AngelahFlo:A divorcee can remarry. However, when Peter was displeased with the saying of Jesus, Jesus told him that the commandment is not for everyone, it is only meant for those who can accept it. |

Truvelisback:Sorry for my late response..hasn't been on Nairaland in a long while. Like you said it's for those who can accept it. Now do you think it can be possible to marry and avoid divorce or whatever it is that causes grounds for divorce? I believe it can be possible if the hardness of heart situation can be dealt with. This calls for wisdom. Thanks for your contribution. |

Dtruthspeaker:A very wise response indeed!! Sorry for my late response Sir. Thanks for this contribution. The key thing is to avoid grounds for divorce based on selfish reasons. God bless you indeed for this. |

AngelahFlo:To put it better the word is based on any unrightness |
| Re: Christian View On Divorce. by Truvelisback(m): 12:12pm On Nov 14, 2025 |
AngelahFlo:Yes, it is possible to marry and avoid divorce if you marry the right person or a compactable partner. The Bible only permit divorce on the ground of adultery. Even as at that, it is optional if you chose to forgive and accept your partner on that ground. Secondly, the hardness of the heart is a situation that cannot be easily dealt with. It is only God that can do that. To be on the safer side, marry a compactable partner or the right partner for you. |
