US State Department's Designated Countries Of Particular Concern (see List) by Nemere2020(op): 9:11am On Nov 01, 2025
Nigeria joined the list yesterday
Under the International Religious Freedom Act (IRFA) of 1998, the President is required to annually review the status of religious freedom in every country in the world and designate each country the government of which has engaged in or tolerated “particularly severe violations of religious freedom” as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC). The law defines particularly severe violations as “systematic, ongoing, egregious violations of religious freedom,” including violations such as: (1) torture; (2) prolonged detention without charges; (3) forced disappearance; or (4) other flagrant denial of life, liberty, or security of persons.

Countries of Particular Concern as at Dec 2023
The most recent Countries of Particular Concern designations were made by the Secretary of State on December 29, 2023:

Burma, People’s Republic of China, Cuba, Eritrea, Iran, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Nicaragua, Pakistan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan.

Federal Government is playing politics with this statement. Instead of them to take advantage of Trump's concerns, align with the US Government to flush out all the bandits and insurgents. Unfortunately, Federal Government is claiming that nothing is happening in Nigeria. Our 'mumu' no too much?

When the killings were happening and the concerned people were acting as if it's just another rumour, despite real people dying.

Now it's time to be accountable.

If a country is designated as such, wetin the US go fit do against them, except economic sanctions which is nothing special to so many countries? Or is it denial of visas? What will they do against China, North Korea, etc?

No be every country you can flex with.

The blame is on those that decided not to take decisive actions against perpetrators of religious killings.
Many lives were used to play politics. Now Amelica is shooking mouth.
When a nation refuse to grow, world powers gather and feast on their resources.

You should know by now that the APC as a party was founded on religious principles. That's the reason for Muslim-Muslim ticket. If not for general out cry in 2015, Tinubu would have been vice to Buhari. I view the APC led government as a jihadist government.

Re: US State Department's Designated Countries Of Particular Concern (see List) by Jonjam269: 9:52am On Nov 01, 2025
Nigeria is a sovereign nation, and no external power has the authority to dictate to her. The killing of any individual is deeply condemnable, and the government must act decisively to end such violence.

However, suggesting that Donald Trump or any foreign leader will determine Nigeria’s fate only fuels the fantasies of online echo chambers and keypad warriors. No one dictates to the United States on how to manage its drug crisis or gun violence; Nigeria equally deserves the same respect and autonomy.
so let’s stop acting like we need foreign approval to fix our own problems.

This your post exposes how shallow your knowledge about what happens to country of particular concern is.

Let me explain it to you. When a country gets categorized as a “country of concern,” it sends the wrong signal to the global community, especially investors.

Foreign investors rely heavily on stability, credibility, and security when deciding where to put their money. Once a country is flagged, it creates fear of political risk, unstable policies, and possible sanctions. That alone is enough to make international companies look elsewhere.

It also affects trade relations, travel opportunities, and access to international funding or partnerships. Even Nigerians abroad could start facing tighter visa and business restrictions because other nations now view us through a lens of suspicion.

Would you still say we shouldn't be worried about this categorization?

Don't mind them. Whether Christians or Muslims, ler the killing stop. Every life matters. But they won't reason it from this angle because of how lucrative is insecurity in Nigeria to some wicked souls.
