The second option is more likely: drone and bombings. Except when leaders of these terrorist groups flee into urban areas that's when they are pursued with boots on ground, but it's highly unlikely since US don't have assets in Nigeria capable of killing person of interest.

The military action through aerial bombardment will have collateral damage but will be surgical at best, there's bound to be surprises, states must tighten their borders so these bandits don't enter and mix in urban areas, the drone will bomb them out ! and there will be collateral damage.

US don't ask for permission to conduct aerial attacks and that will undermine the government of the PBAT -

US is a country that preaches freedom and granting people their overwhelming desire. Nigeria shouldn't be an exemption. The Islamists being majority in the north want a country strictly governed by Islamic tenets including Shari'a. The North West and North East states through Boko Haram have agitated for this for over 16 years. Instead of attacking them , they should have a country of their own where strict Islamic rules will reign supreme. This is my humble submission.
