Lagos State Health Insurance Scheme, popularly known as Ilera Eko, was launched in 2018 by the state government to provide universal health coverage for all residents, reduce high out-of-pocket medical expenses, and provide access to quality and affordable healthcare. Findings, however, showed that many residents who enrolled in the scheme are still battling with catastrophic medical bills and out-of-pocket payments at the state-owned hospitals. Lagos government needs to stop using “Ilera Eko” as a PR tool. If people with active insurance still have to pay high bills, then the system is either corrupt or broken. It’s not enough to launch programs; there must be accountability and transparency in how hospitals treat enrollees. |

A really sad situation, nothing as depressing as poor health and not being able to afford to pay the bills associated with it. |

Lol, gbajue.. The more you look the less you see. After he paid, policy changed. Infact they will look at him as mumu, you paid him much as insurance premium and you then want your wife to do CS? APC and it's goons, they learnt from the best, Chicago's finest. |

Muhylonaire007:Please how can it be well that Tinubu’s lootocracy master plan squeezes out increasing taxes for IGR and budget growth without commensurate increases in government services and utilities? Do you know what well means? Are we Stockholm Syndrome sufferers? Lanrelagboi: |

I bent when I tought drugs will be cheaper at the pharmacy inside the lasuth until I discovered that it is even about 40% more expensive than pharmacies that are outside.there was a free pharmacy there too that cannot boast of ordinary paracetamol. 1nigeriamyfoot:yes but you trust your APGA They will come and start calling out the Lagos state government, their own governor will not think about such initiative in the next 20years |

Ilera eko only covers for primary care, people should know this. even when they pretend to cover some secondary care, the limits are largely inadequate. Private HMOs covers better I recommend Hygeia HMO to anyone who wants to try out the private HMO covers |

When the policy is not beneficial to the poor masses but beneficial to the government, they implement immediately, boycott all bureaucratic bottlenecks...but when it's to the advantage of the poor masses, it takes years and loads of bureaucratic bottlenecks to implement! Things are really not looking good for ordinary Nigerians! |

I totally in support of overhauling the Ilera Eko policy. It's become muddled in opaqueness and deep corruption. |

This is eye opening sha . I remember when I went for my rural posting in one of the general Hospitals in Lagos. I was so impressed with the ‘Ilera Eko’ as practically over 90% of the patients we operated were under the scheme and they literally had to pay very little to access qualitative healthcare ( including surgeries). This was in sharp contrast to my parent center where the National replica has become nothing to write home about . As a Doctor, I had to enroll my family under a private HMO to enjoy a proper health insurance cover. Nigerians can actually benefit a lot from this country if corruption can be reduced to the bearest minimum and if our leaders can be more compassionate. That said, the LASG should look into these complaints and strengthen the scheme . Ilero Eko is extremely important for the well being of Lagosians . Eko Oni baje o |

Is this not the state of super IGR..? The one that can survive without the FG allocation, the one which has no sand in the ground, now it is lieing to her resident about simple health insurance that works in every other state.. Come to ogun, Calabar, Anambra etc.. it works... |
| Re: Ilera Eko: Lagosians Groan Under Heavy Medical Bills Despite Insurance Cover by blacksam01: 9:14am On Nov 03, 2025 |
WesleyPepper:Your don't get it doc..to the Lagos state government, progress is only when they can fizzle out lots ND lots of IGR from from it's resident, that for them is progress. If u go to Anambra, Ogun ,Calabar it still works perfectly...u are told the different categories to cover different ailments... And when the time to stand by it comes, they stand by you... Lagos is just under siege by rogue leaders..who only believe life begins and ends in IGR |

The insurance is a scam. The General Hospital at Ifako Ijaiye did the same thing to us in May 2024 when my wife gave birth. Apart from the fact that you will pay bill despite your insurance, the nurses and other attendants will demand for some items - detergents, dettol and even money. My advice to anyone is, pray to God to bless you with good health and finance. Health insurance is a scam. |

How can one pay 15k per annum and expect to have free ceasarean operation and more? Or is the premium different now? If the majority of the enrolees visit the hospital often or have complicated health issues, the money won't go far even with subsidy. I think LASG should consider having different insurance products based on peculiar circumstances and affordability. |
