cdqyehyeh:read most of the comments well and u will see its rooted in the previous failure of related policies....Nigerians have lost faith in their leaders, it's not really an intellectual issue... They will destroy like 5 things that drive price of a major commodity with their incompetence, then introduce one good policy that isnt enough to help cushion the effect of the damage they initially caused... u forgot, the policy with rice ?? They stopped rice importation.....but they had already destroyed the naira, petrol expensive, electricity cost was sky high, cost of every other thing in the production chain of manufacturers had significantly increased... So the effect was of closing border against rice was little and local producers just passed the burden in addition to their greed on masses.... Nigeria is a very weird country....this increase in tarrif should kill imports and help drive success of local production......but we are just deceiving ourself.. .this is not a ban....marketers won't back down...they will keep importing both them and dangote will reach an agreement of how they can both thrive in the market and eventually push the burden on everyday Nigerian, who already is struggling to survive because these marketers won't mind to sabotage dangote refinery.....abi u think it's witchcraft that ddnt make our refineries work?? Its these same pple |

cdqyehyeh:I wonder oo. I don't how some people reason honestly. Our scarce resources has been frittered away on importation for many years, now someone has done what the govt failed to do in order to conserve our scarce resources, yet some people that have no understanding are not happy with it |

Thewrath:we run a free market economy, which means firms can compete freely but in practice it us not so when the government wants to publish the people they float the naira and called it market forces at play, when they want to protect inefficient private firms, they say they are protecting local production,in both cases the masses receive the short end of the stick |

cdqyehyeh:The thread deserves the posts it's getting. Otedola is speaking up because of his friend and not that he's a patriot in this case. Coming to importation, even USA imports finished goods from China and other countries. The ones that made the tarrif are putting it 9n hold until they see some metrics but Otedola is smarter than all. |
| Re: 15% Import Tariff: Femi Otedola Praises President Tinubu by nairalanda1(m): 8:18am On Nov 04, 2025 |
cdqyehyeh:The problem is that most Nigerians want things cheap. If tinubu were to say that fuel must be sold at 100 per liter , they will be so so happy Also a lot of people are being critical because they feel that ' they did it to GEJ , therefore we must do it to them too '. There are good arguments against protectionist behavior, but let's be honest, we allowed our love for cheap things to wreck our refineries in the first place. |
| Re: 15% Import Tariff: Femi Otedola Praises President Tinubu by nairalanda1(m): 8:23am On Nov 04, 2025 |
erniok:Yes USA imports from china and as a result a lot of it's domestic manufacturing has been wrecked. That's why a lot of people voted for trump whose activity this year has been slapping tarrifs on many nations, china included. It's also part of why the democrats lost. A democrat president was responsible for signing treaties that led to American jobs being outsourced to china and other countries. Yes, Americans want cheap things, but that has basically affected their domestic industry and led to millions doing low paying service jobs. Forget politics. If obi was in charge and did this , it would still be right. After all we lose a lot of forex to importation, which affects forex reserves You cannot demand jobs and support polices that destroy job creation At least we now have more people setting up refineries |

Thewrath:Competition is necessary to keep Dangote on his toes and preventing a monopoly. With this tariff, he has become a monopoly, enabling him to charge as high as he possibly can. The money isn't coming from the pocket of the government but from you and me. He has done this before in cement |

Many Nigerians are languishing in IDP camps in their own country for many years now. No visible help coming through, hope lost, dreams shattered before their very eyes. Otedola is here commending Tinubu for introducing 15% whatever. |
| Re: 15% Import Tariff: Femi Otedola Praises President Tinubu by erniok(m): 8:50am On Nov 04, 2025 |
nairalanda1:US raising tarrif is nit new. Obama did it against China where the felt the trade deficit was targeted against them. Trump's case was even using drugs as his alibi and not even trade deficit. That said, US have all it takes to keep manufacturing but their unionism that demands workers are paid top dollar and investors looking for massive profits made so many companies outsource because of cheap labour. That cannot be said about Nigeria so it would be like comparing apple and oranges. The 15% tariff is not needed. With the alleged removal of subsidy, it's a free market. The importation of petrol products, as long as the products are not substandard keeps dangote on his toes and it's a win-win for Nigerians but you guys are smarter that other economist. If Obi is the president and think of this nonsense, I'd have attacked him as well because this policy is not well thought out. |

Alaigbo:LOL ! you sound like someone that have eye but can't seee, Economics is a science i.e as you practice you learn nd evolve in approach This approach of hiking Tariff have being on for long, We do it on Cars, Rice ... how as it changed anything imported cars still flood our roads more than innoson or GAC, you can stand on the road to conduct sampling Though it sounds good on paper we are promoting local Manufacturer But the fact remains Govt as not done enough for these measures to effectiively work You want Nigerians to buy Innoson But the cheapest innoson is over 10million ... in a country over 180million are below poverty line nd minimum wage is 70k You want Nigerian to buy innoson cars But Govt allot Foreign brand new car to themselves, how many innoson or GAC dey Tinubu convoy, his ministers n appointees is innoson there official car You cant promote what you aint leading by example You want Nigerian to eat local rice, do our farmers have capacity to meet demand, farm insecurity unresolved, not to mention our leaders even rebag foreign rice to share at campaign grounds Govt that want to dissuade Fuel import continue to issue licenses to marketers, govt want to dissuade fuel import yet CBN announced sourcing forex to Marketers When you understand All this point i highlighted with common $en$e you will see this govt is a complete joke ... forget all this elite jobbers on Tv speaking big grammar .. with just common $en$e Tinubu policies are always counterproductive in the real sense |

Tinoobu is worst thing to happen to Nogeria. Now fuel will become more expensive than the global rate. Nigerians has suffered in the hands of these wicked politicians and their cronies. When importers now add the 15%, fuel will become N1300 in their hands. They will still sell it. While Dangote refinery will now see opportunity to increase his own price to thesame N1300 to make 15% gain increase. At the end of the day every body proce has increased. This tinubu who also has a refinery in Malta will bring his own fuel into the country without paying any tax and making 15% more profits. Cursed be upon agbadorians and the supporters of this evil politicians and their tribesmen. They removed subsidy and now they are taking subsidy from us. They removed our little benefits and now asking us to pay them back those benefits we used to enjoy. |

Mandate1:This policy is good for Nigeria and Nigerians. Those who are addicted to importation of petroleum products should bring in their money to build refineries in Nigeria to compete with Dangote refinery. There are many benefits in building a refinery here than just continue to import finished product. Local production of goods is the best way to go rather than importation of finished goods. It may be difficult, but it is the best. |
| Re: 15% Import Tariff: Femi Otedola Praises President Tinubu by AmazingG007: 9:38am On Nov 04, 2025 |
Thewrath:The thing is that imported petrol is cheaper than the locally refined petrol isn’t that great ?? They had to put additional tariffs on the imported petrol to help local refineries because our billionaire investors want to declare billions dollars profit in a year…local refined products should be cheaper than imported ones but not in Nigeria….same thing Obasanjo did for Dangote with cement imported cement was cheaper than locally made cement by dangote Obasanjo had to ban importation of cement for Dangote so that citizens will have no choice than to buy the locally made for Dangote to be profitable with his local cement and the argument was that he provided jobs and help with FX….as much as we want jobs and less stress on fx the gov. should look in to our private companies too for prices regulation for Nigerians to get fair pricing…you can’t say because you provide 100,000 jobs to stress 100 millions Nigerians |
| Re: 15% Import Tariff: Femi Otedola Praises President Tinubu by nairalanda1(m): 9:52am On Nov 04, 2025 |
erniok:Very true. That said, US have all it takes to keep manufacturing but their unionism that demands workers are paid top dollar and investors looking for massive profits made so many companies outsource because of cheap labour.Because cost of living in the USA is also very high. And yes, outsourcing happens because it is technologically easier and financially easier . But at the expense of jobs for the USA? (Many parts of the USA have large unemployment because of that...) That cannot be said about Nigeria so it would be like comparing apple and oranges.[quote]Well, that's not quite true.. 1. Most of the imported fuel is very poor quality. If we were to import good quality fuel, imported fuel would have a landing cost of nearly N2000 2.Ironically, Dangote is able to keep pricing at the point it is because 'low labour costs'.(A US worker for example has to pay far more in tax than an average Nigerian worker). 3.Again, the countries that we import from are introducing green policies...meaning those refineries could be shut down 4. Must we sacrifice jobs because 'cheaper stuff'.? Must we sacrifice profits for domestic refining which could be used for paying workers higher salaries.? 5. Finally, we don't have enough forex coming into this country. That's on APC, they promised what they have failed to keep...but at the end of the day, we got forex needs now, and it;s no use crying over spilt milk. 6. China also uses tarrifs to protect its own manufacturing...hence trump's anger. If Obi is the president and think of this nonsense, I'd have attacked him as well because this policy is not well thought out.Well, you are still free to buy imported fuel though. Let's still support our domestic industries. I don't like our reliance on imports. |
