Nigeria’s Sovereignty Must Be Respected – EU by AnonPoet(op): 6:46am On Nov 06, 2025
The European Union has reaffirmed its respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty, distancing itself from external pressures while pledging continued collaboration with the country in peacebuilding, interfaith dialogue, and human rights protection.

EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot, stated this on Tuesday in Lagos during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, where he clarified the bloc’s position following US President Donald Trump’s recent remarks on Nigeria.

Mignot stressed that the EU’s stance is guided by its long-standing partnership with Nigeria rather than the views of other nations.

“Our position is one of solidarity with Nigeria – solidarity with victims of violence, with authorities working to protect citizens, and with the Nigerian people who overwhelmingly desire peaceful coexistence beyond ethnic and religious divides,” he said.

He affirmed that the EU and its member states fully respect Nigeria’s sovereignty and its constitutional commitment to religious neutrality.

According to him, the EU is ready to enhance its support in peace, security and defence matters, as well as through dialogue with all stakeholders, including civil society organisations and traditional and religious leaders.

Mignot said the EU would continue to implement several peacebuilding initiatives across the country to promote peaceful coexistence.

“We also support programmes on deradicalisation, demobilisation and reintegration of ex-members of non-state armed groups in the North-East,” he said.

He said the EU would remain committed to the protection of all communities, especially the minorities, with the freedom of religion and belief.

Mignot acknowledged that while Nigeria faces challenges in human rights and freedom of religion, its legal and institutional framework provides for fundamental freedoms.

“The situation is not perfect, as in any country, but there exists a constitutional basis for the protection of human rights.

“It is up to Nigerian authorities and society as a whole to uphold and strengthen this environment of peaceful coexistence,” he stated.

The ambassador stressed that the EU works closely with civil society organisations on projects promoting interfaith dialogue and good relations among religious communities.

He noted that the EU’s support is non-discriminatory, covering all victims of violence irrespective of the motives.

Mignot said the EU’s engagement with Nigeria remains steady and predictable, adding that the cooperation between both parties is not driven by what others do but by “shared interest in a stable, prosperous, and democratic Nigeria.”

Mignot disclosed that a peace, security and defence dialogue between Nigeria and the EU is expected soon as part of efforts to deepen strategic cooperation.

He emphasised that the EU’s guiding principle is to help Nigeria reinforce stability and prosperity and that the country’s future “lies firmly in the hands of Nigerians themselves.”

His remarks come after President Trump threatened possible action against Nigeria over alleged anti-Christian violence, urging the U.S. to cut off assistance to the country and designating Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern” in a series of posts on social media.

Europe is the real enemy of Nigeria.

Europe have never offered Nigeria any help to end the unending insecurity in Nigeria. They have never lifted a finger to help.

They colonized Nigeria, ripped Nigeria off, merged people with completely different ideologies, belief, culture, dialect and tradition together to form one country out of their selfishness, which is the main cause of civil wars, ethnic battles and political crises in most African nations today.

But go to Europe, even communities with less than 3 million population are standing independently as a country. Europeans made sure every ethnicity in Europe had their own country or semi country to reduce polarization and division and to encourage cohesion.

But in Africa they lumped different people together to form one country in their effort to ensure easy control of natural resources in Africa and in the process they set most African countries up for failure and crises till today.

Europe should not worry, Muslim Jihadists will definitely conquer Europe and take over Europe. That evil they are silently wishing on Nigeria will befall them with time, it's a natural law.

God bless America forever cool

What is sovereignty about Nigeria self? When the country can’t protect its citizens against invaders and religious fanatics?

Abeg make EU go sit down, Nigeria is not a sovereign nation as long as all these things exists within and the govt is not bold enough to confront it!
Re: Nigeria’s Sovereignty Must Be Respected – EU by Helinuse: 7:04am On Nov 06, 2025
Our government is complicit in the gnocide of the Nigerian people.

Even Tinubu doesn’t believe in the sovereignty of a country that is why he intended invading Niger. So, why shouldn’t same apply?

These unions and countries can only release statements to affirm their positions on issues. However, if the US decides to take action on Nigeria, they will do absolutely nothing. Nobody will like to incur the wrath of America.

Terrorists have done more than disrespect the people, and don't forget that democracy should be government for the people, not against the people. It should be all about the people.

Of course our sovereignty must be respected.

President Trump already said that, The United States are coming for an intervention and not an invasion. They are offering help, same way they did in 2019 when they cleared off 90% of Boko Haram’s territory before the Democrats got into power and halted the collaboration.

Nigeria + USA = NA COLLABO

Intervention not Invasion. The US are welcome into the sovereign federal Republic of Nigeria.

If anything the Boko Haram Fulani terrorists are the ones undermining and disregarding the sovereignty of this country, they have their own flags hosted in numerous cities across Northern Nigeria, This cannot be allowed so now President Trump is coming to help strengthen the sovereignty of Nigeria.
