Meet The Simultaneous Lt-Gen. Holders In The History Of The Nigerian Army by Racoon(op): 5:40pm On Nov 06, 2025
A Lieutenant General is a superior rank to Major General but subordinate to a (full) General. The rank has a NATO rank code of OF-8, equivalent to a Vice-Admiral of the Nigerian Navy and an Air Marshal in the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) and the Air Forces of many Commonwealth countries.

The Lieutenant General rank is always reserved for the chief of army staff( COAS ) just as it equivalent in the sister force for the respective service chief.

In the history of the Nigerian army, there have been some exceptional cases wherein the Lieutenant General rank is being hold simultaneously by two or more senior officers.

The recent case is that of the Nigerian Army's command structure got reinforced with two active Lt-Generals: Lt-Gen Waidi Shaibu commanding as Chief of Army Staff, and Lt-Gen E.A.P. Undiandeye holding the fort as Chief of Defence Intelligence (CDI).

This dual brass ain't new—recall Lt-Gen Jeremiah Useni was running the FCT ops under Abacha while Lt-Gen Ishaya Bamaiyi led the Army. And then Lt-Gen Abel Akale drilling cadets at NDA Kaduna as Lt-Gen Martin Luther Agwai helmed HQ. Remember that even Maj-General Chikadibia Isaac Obiakor's 2005 jump to Lt-Gen for UN peacekeeping under Agwai.

While in the time past, the then Major General Lamidi Adeosun's(RIP) 2019 promotion to Lt-Gen amid Lt-Gen Tukur Buratai's tenure.

Well military tradition has been broken over and over. There was a time when former president Ibrahim Babangida was wearing the same General rank as the late General Sanni Abacha

My question Is why do so many Generals go on compulsory retirement whenever a new chief of Army staff Is appointed. I have noticed that there are always a lot of Major Generals in the army. In which there are always no lieutenant Generals, except promoted to chief of army staff.

Also, from my years of observations, all the selected chief of army staff are always major generals before being promoted to Lieutenant Generals, when picked as chief of army staff.

What's confusing me right now and what I still can't get my head around Is why do other generals go on compulsory retirementhuh Even when the newly chief of army staff Is being promoted to a lieutenant General, which Is superior than a major general.

Because from what I have observed, the generals that always goes on compulsory retirement are always major generals, can someone please enlighten me on this?

It's really not so easy, you have to create new offices for them.

Most often you can't take order from your course mate. It's somehow. Just like in Secondary school you're in SS3 and your class mate Headboy wants to be ordering you around like a junior student. Most times you no go gree.

So to avoid that disobedience, all of his mates have to go. Even those that's seniors will definitely go

Gen Buratai is another silly officer that shouldn't be allow to walk around in this country. He, Buhari and El-Rufai are all terrorists. Good Buhari is gone. But others days are numbered.

U can't take orders from your mate or junior so therefore all the senior officers must go on compulsory retirement.

I do not believe there is any solid truth to the claim that Lt Gen is "reserved" for the COAS.

Adeosun case is the best example as he was promoted deep into Buratai's term as a Lt Gen and even outlasted Buratai who retired in Jan 2021, while a junior was made COAS and he (Adesosun) retired only in November 2021.

Buhari was the head of state when all of this happened so we cannot claim to understand Army tradition more than him.

Not strictly true again.

Adeosun stayed for 10 months after his junior was promoted to Lt Gen, outlasting the previous COAS.

In fact he served under 2 juniors, as Atahiru died in office and Yayha took over in the middle of 2021.

See my post above.

If a general from course, let's say 40, is made a Lieutenant General, all the Major Generals of Course 39 must retire because they can't take orders from their juniors no matter how humble they are.

In many of those instances, the newly promoted COAS may be a junior in certain gradings to many of those Major Generals.
Re: Meet The Simultaneous Lt-Gen. Holders In The History Of The Nigerian Army by DeeGov123(m): 8:34pm On Nov 06, 2025
Once an officer who is junior to your sets at NDA is made the chief of ARMY staff automatically all officer who are seniors to him gets retired from the force with immediate effect except some who are course mate to the chief of defence staff mey be retained by him and they will work at defence head quarters and not undet the army. The can only recieve order from the chief of defence staff and not the chief of army staff because he is junior to them. a brigade general can become chief of army staff depending on how many year left for him to leave the service, may be he has served for 30 or 31 years, he can get CoAS but like 26 or 27 years, no he can get it cos it will take 7 years to hold that position which can delay promotion of younger officers

the promotion into the ranks in the military always comes with bias, especially in Nigeria. I remember this incident very well. I also remember when Gen Abdulsalaam Abubakar was elevated into full general, skipping 2 ranks and his seniors to become head of state after abacha was murdered.

In a situation where a top military officer leading a nation dies or becomes incapacitated, his second-in-command takes over but in the case of abubakar, due process wasn't followed

You are correct, regarding Adeosun. The only thing I’d add is that Lt. Gen. Buratai played a MAJOR role in Adeosun’s promotion to Lt. Gen., in fact Adeosun said as much during a brief pre-retirement ceremony for Buratai. If you do some more research, you may discover that Buratai’s dad was friends with Buhari. After Buratai’s retirement, I suspect he engaged Buhari not to retire his old pal, Adeosun, and that’s why he was able to stay on for a while after Attahir took the helm. Adeosun was a very loyal guy and did not seem like someone that would disrupt the system by being insubordinate to the new chain of command.
