Too many people still think next of kin means “the person I love most.”
It doesn’t.

Your next of kin is the person legally recognized to act or make decisions on your behalf when you are unable to whether because you’re sick, missing, or gone. It’s a position of responsibility, not affection.
When you list a child especially a minor as your next of kin, you’re setting up confusion for the future.

A child cannot sign, collect, or give legal instructions. So, when the time comes for action salary claims, pension, insurance benefits, medical consent, property management everything stalls. Institutions will ask for a guardian, court order, or affidavit, because a minor can’t act in law.

In real life, what happens?
👉🏽 The family begins to argue.
👉🏽 Banks and employers get stuck in the middle.
👉🏽 The process drags on for months or years.

It’s not wickedness to choose a capable adult it’s wisdom. Your next of kin should be someone who can speak and act for you, not someone who will need help to do so. Someone trustworthy enough to protect your interests and handle matters legally.
You can love your children and still make the right administrative choice.

And remember, your next of kin does not automatically inherit your property. That’s another common misconception. If you want your child or anyone else to benefit from your estate, put it in writing make a Will.

So, the next time you fill a form and see “Next of Kin,” pause and think: If something happens today, who can act for me legally and quickly?
That’s your real next of kin.
Not necessarily your child, but your choice.

Just because you and your siblings understand doesn’t mean other Africans understand. I’ve encountered a family that had issues just because their mom used her last born as next of kin.

You insinuate that other relatives are dangerous as next of kin. I mentioned that my siblings and I use one another as next of kin and no danger for us so far. You are now talking about a woman who used her child as her next of kin

There must be adequate knowledge about the next of kin. You don’t just go using anybody because not everyone is knowledgeable about it. Just because you’re knowledgeable of it doesn’t make it widespread. So before you embark on the journey educate yourself family members on why you’re doing it.

You seem to be drunk. Neither the poster nor I myself told people to be careless in choosing next of kin. The poster clearly states that it is unadvisable for people to use their underage children as next of kin. That is all the post is talking about. But you tried to counter the post. I never said that people should not be careful in choosing their next of kin. So, your responses to my comment are baseless and useless.

Okay. I made a point and you went to tell us how you used your family which is fine. I only added that because you are educated on the matter doesn’t mean everyone is as Knowledgeable as you in the matter. So there should be proper education. So keep your anger and it was just an addition.

Because your family doesn’t pose a danger doesn’t mean other families are the same. Some Igbo families fight because of NOK. So the best thing would be to inform them that you’re only doing it because you want the person capable to be able to fill the gap. When you’re unwell or something and not necessarily because of property.

Because you all understands each other doesn’t mean every family understands themselves. A mother can chose her first daughter cause she’s older and if the first son doesn’t understand, he might resolve to violence. So the best option is the mother informing her children. You said you all are happy with it and it’s fine but I added that families should educate each other to avoid conflict. What’s bad with that??
